I’ve never been able to move past “chicken-scratch” stage. I mean, I can clean it up afterwards, but drawing smooth lines, especially with a not-so-steady hand can be so challenging and frustrating. I envy those that can draw without sketchy outlines.
@joshooah866 ай бұрын
just practice drawing curved lines, swirls, spirals, waves, as well as angles and straight lines, like zig zags and stuff. do it with as much intent as possible. Then mix straight lines, curved lines and angles shapes. dont worry about what the shapes look like, just try to close the outline. keep trying to increase speed and decisiveness as you go. hopefully this is a helpful step towards getting those lines down in one go! I filled like half a notebook with abstract shapes and line work while i was practicing.
@EndieGLITCH6 ай бұрын
Something that might help is even if it’s frustrating, focus on doing one quick continuous line rather than a lot of even faster small lines. It will make your art way faster to do and more precise.

Have you tried drawing from your shoulder? I've had the same problem and its because I'm very used to drawing with my wrist. You basically dont move your wrist and elbow, and make the stroke by moving your shoulder.

NOW THIS IS A NICE VIDEO. As someone who regularly takes commissions to draw characters in these iconic Mario art styles, I found it really insightful to hear your take on them. There were even some tips that I’ve never even noticed, like at 3:28 where male and female characters have different highlights in their eyes. Now whenever someone asks me how I draw in these styles, I’ll simply link them to this video. This is incredibly helpful and it’s surprising to see not that many videos covering it.

One thing I will say about the strikers style is that the chicken scratch is selectively done. Features like the face are noticeably cleaner than limbs and the like, and oftentimes the overall flow/action line of the character is taken into consideration and the lines mostly get more chaotic where that action line ends, as well as at extreme corners, which the style includes a lot of

I think the one crucial thing you forgot to mention about the Mario strikers artstyle is the posing. Even if we just compare the official art with yours at 4:12, the mario looks way more dynamic, his whole body in the shape of a triangle, the posing of the arms and head both pointing the eye in the direction of the ball. It also uses a bit of forced perspective (notice how his left leg is bigger than the right one) which really makes the whole image pop.
@ArtStylist Жыл бұрын
I define art style as line, color, shading, textures, and effects. Topics such as anatomy and perspective are complex and better fit for a channel focusing on character design. Not to say I won’t address them in future videos, but I want to make my videos as accessible as possible to newcomers.

I've often thought about making videos like this, being a bit of a style chameleon myself, but I never did get around to it, and these days I don't think I have the interest anymore. Glad somebody is taking it on! Looking forward to seeing where this channel goes. I'd be interested in seeing what insights you might have to not only rendering a character in a style, but making adjustments to character design to better fit a certain game's design paradigm, since style does encompass not only the linework, lighting, shading, etc, but also the mindset of how anatomy is handled, how elements are simplified or abstracted, etc.

This was an issue I ran into when I was trying to learn how to draw in Mario art styles about a year ago. The tip I often heard was “Practice figure drawing, and practice basic art fundamentals as well if you haven’t already.“ Practicing those, outside of doing these art style studies, can be very helpful. But another tip I would give is to do character studies as well. You can take a character or multiple characters from the art style you’re studying, measure out their proportions (how many heads tall is the character, how long are their arms and legs compared to the rest of their body, etc), get reference photos of poses (of IRL people mostly), and then try to depict the characters doing those poses with what you now know about their proportions. This can be challenging, but with practice in figure drawing, it can get easier. This is what has helped me so far anyways.
@supermario1fan Жыл бұрын
Personally, I'd say I'm a pretty good artist, but I struggle with anatomy and drawing backgrounds sometimes. Anatomy is definitely the hardest to master, even I am still practicing! I usually base my art off pre-existing Mario poses, once I learn anatomy I will be a super artist!

The Dream Team artstyle, while basically being the same as the other M&L games, is still complicated enough with it's shading that I think it deserves either it's own video or section in the next video. @creativeghost7368 Жыл бұрын
@@SMCwasTaken purely based on that question I'm going to assume you made this yourself. In that case, it could probably benefit from more consistent lineart, an example being the really wide lineart for the head. The lineart in the original style isn't really that thick and I think such being the case here is somewhat out of place. I think you did really well with the full thing though! The shading especially is really on point I think. Is there any link or something you can share where I can see the full image?

Cool video! One art style I'd like to see in a future video is the classic Shantae promo art style by Matt Bozon, seen in Xtreme Sports GBC and Shantae GBC's promo art. I just think it's a fascinating, yet nostalgic art style, due to feeling like a blend between Disney and fake manga style. Later Shantae games went with a more generic anime-ish art style for the promo art and portraits, which is still good but not as charming.
