I like the video Nature, but this is kind of a basic info piece, more meant for the unaware, rather than people that are following this. I would have liked to have seen more detail in the features, if they plan to pair it with multiple cgms or if they are going proprietary? Will the cgm and pump be housed in the same unit or separate units? Are they going with a tubeless pump system or not? Also they should have called the tech what it is: closed loop insulin systems rather than the hype term "artificial pancreas" to avoid confusion in the target (uninformed) audience.
@roidroid3 жыл бұрын
it would be great if they were all in the same unit hey. So needless to have *separate* devices with separate points. Just make the CGM sensor insertion part of the insulin cannula. *"are going proprietary?"* _That'd be a bold strategy mike, lets see how it goes for them in the long-run lol._ #wearenotwaiting

Can an artificial pancreas be used by people with pancreatic cancer? This cancer has a dire prognosis, but I imagine it wouldn't be quite as deadly if the pancreas could be removed.
@tronicdude63 жыл бұрын
Type 1 Diabetes is caused by the beta cells of the pancreas being wiped out by the immune system. The pancreas also has other functions besides producing beta cells. The "Artificial Pancreas" is more a marketing term than anything.
@alsaunders78053 жыл бұрын
This is not an artificial pancreas, it's a fancy, computerized, biofeedback regulated insulin pump. I was hoping the same thing, my mother has stage 4 pancreatic cancer and I'm her caretaker. An artificial pancreas would have to make and regulate insulin, make and release targeted digestive enzymes depending on what you ate, assist your liver and spleen with producing and releasing bile to digest fats and I'm sure that's not all. That's why pancreatic cancer is almost always terminal. And because of it's location and interconnectedness the cancer easily spreads to other organs that are just as vital as it is. 😢🍻
@maniesh3 жыл бұрын
The pancreas does more than just producing insulin. They produce vital enzymes for digestion and other hormones like glucagon
@roidroid3 жыл бұрын
@@maniesh An artificial pancreas coudl deliver glucogon too. IIRC one of the first insulin "pumps" also pumped glucogon along with insulin, heard that at a talk i attended.
@gorbaambroise65593 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, the problem with pancreatic cancer is not only the fact that the function of the pancreas is impaired. In most cases, the disease is diagnosed at late stages meaning that the cancer has already spread to other organs. Having a healthy pancreas wouldn't help that much if the cancer is progressing. A big breakthrough would be to be able to diagnose it earlier or maybe using CAR-T cells (cells able to target and kill cancer cells).

There are open-source options already available using your own bluetooth continuous monitors and pumps. I think it requires a dedicated phone to keep them in sync though. Obviously you should check with a doc since I don't even think the FDA can regulate the setup.

Checkout the tandem tslim. Ive been using it for about a year, pretty awesome. Only thing you really have to do is calibrate you dexcom g6, definitely not as accurate as they say, ive had it test 100+ poi to high, which causes control iq to give you a massive bolus. 0:53 - You can skip all that by just waiting for a while after eating and then taking a blood sample to measure the blood-glucose, and then giving a prescribed amount based on that. Of course, it also means having to stab yourself after every meal and snack. 😕 This is why diabetic pets eat diabetic pet-food which is formulated to have an exact amount of carbohydrates in each serving, so you don't have to keep puncturing your pet to measure. People really take their bodies for granted to have the freedom to eat without all that unpleasantness.

This is actually horrible advice. Waiting to see how high your blood sugar gets then taking insulin to match means your blood sugar stays high till then insulin peaks, which is not instantaneous, though there are many fairly fast acting insulins. The best plan is to take insulin right before you eat for the approximate amount of carbs you are eating that way the insulin is working as the carbs are being metabolized. That's why the lady was talking about nutrition and carb counting, it actually is the current best way of keeping your blood sugar level "normal".
@roidroid3 жыл бұрын
This is probably applicable advice IF YOU'RE A PERSON'S PET (are you?). Otherwise it's horrible advice and should be deleted. if you're a diabetic PET and are reading this, you have other reasons to be "contacting" the channel. Hey good luck with the whole developing sentience thing!

@nicotti3 жыл бұрын
They are talking about closed loop insulin pump/cgm combo systems. Closed loop meaning the insulin pump will adjust the dosage based off what the cgm is reading without the need for the person to do anything. Currently a diabetic reads their blood sugar then has to calculate and administer a dosage themselves.
