one of isayama best traits is how he conveys motion and action. even from chapter 0 he dosent follow technical accuracy rather he focuses more on exaggeration and paneling, how he exaggerates scales of titans, perspective and motion makes him stands out from other mangaka.

One thing I like about the art of attack on titan is how distinguishable all the faces are. Everyone noticed the similarity of zeke and Grisham when they first saw zekes face and when look at riener and his mother are easily recognizable as mother and son because of isayama's art and the same goes for Connie and his mother and especially eren and his mother. You can also see it with rieners mother and gabi's father who are siblings, mean while most other anime have the same stock face copy pasted fifty times with each time with a different hair color and hair style and calling them different

Lumo If you noticed , earlier on Hajime Isayama didn't put much thought on drawing houses and infrastructures so all of the houses and buildings looked bare bone , simplistic and couldn't really convey the time period he was envisioning . However , the anime fleshed this out immensely and incorporated european architechtural style into the design of the world and create an era for the setting of the series . Hajime quickly caught on too and has since updated the designs of the buildings and cities to be more detailed and less mundane and bland . Recently with the revelation about Marley and stuff , he has also done a pretty great job researching and replicating the era of WW1 .

The only thing that I would like to add to the discussion is the importance of assistants, especially when analyzing the improvements on background art. They are usually drawn by the mangakas themselves in the beginning of the series, but as the series gains popularity, the mangaka starts to work with assistants that will draw detailed background, clothes etc. Sometimes I see people praysing highly detailed backgrounds crediting only the mangakas like total geniuses, not mentioning that, most of the time, they are usually drawn by assistants.

Another artistic aspect of the manga/anime I found really interesting was how Eren looks progress throughout the story according to the previous owners of his titan. In his earlier years (season 1-2) his hairstyle is the same as Eren Kruger's. And in season 3, his hair resembles Grisha's hair. In season 4, he grows out his hair, and it resembles the hair of Frieda Reiss. And further into season 4, he starts to wear it in a bun, and he resembles the owner of the Warhammer Titan.

MMM the characters look so beautiful. though his first 2 seasons artwork were still really good, the volumes consisting of season 4 HANDS DOWN his best artistic work. the lines add so much more tension and emotion. not only that, his use of manga screens really developed throughout the series too. i love how he uses the sketchy lines for detail and emtoion, then layers of manga screens for depth, shadowing, and highligthing (even sometimes, if it is a dark mood, he will have the entire character and background under a light grey manga screen)

I love the art style of the first volumes as much as the new ones. Back then Isayama stated that he wasn't really good at drawing but in my opinion the first art style really fitted the setting of the story. In the beginning neither the characters (well most of them) or the readers really knew where the Titans came from or what exactly they are. The old art style made the Titans really creepy and uncanny valley like, and that really emphasized the horror the people inside the walls felt towards them. I think it works very well with the ages of Armin, Eren and Mikasa as well. They where still children at that time. Before the Fall of Maria life was, more or less, simplistic for the three of them. That made the impact of Carla`s death even more tragic, because to children Titans must be way more horrifying than to adults. The first art style reminds me of childhood memory's as well. When you grow up you tend to not remember things of your childhood clearly (i don't know if my sentence structure makes sense). The final art style of the series reflects now the adult characters. They now know what the cause of the Titans where and for them it all happened not too long ago. I like the theory that the whole story is told by an adult Armin, since the events of the ending are very fresh to him and the others. Please excuse my grammar. My mother tongue is German so i don't know if i accidentally mixed the German grammar into the English one.

0:28 Yup, that's because the art might not have been good, but the story is TOP TIER and that's Attack on Titan. And the anime has the very top tier story with amazing art, the results are: Perfection.

I like how even though the art in the manga was inaccurate and looked odd at times WIT studio still went with it and tried to keep the style. Also, if you haven't noticed, as Isayama's art improves and changes so does the studio try to adapt to it. I mean, just compare how the characters looked in s1 vs s3.

That art is not ugly though? It's rough, sketch-like, but not ugly. Maybe some panels / early chapters.

there's just something special about unpolished raw art and seeing it develope and improve in front of our eyes compared to the usual polished at the beginning art that subtly changes as it goes on to where its barely noticeable. you know its a good story/idea when publishers saw that kind of messy art and an incomplete storyline and still thought "This is something we will publish proudly" [with some improvements they're still a business]

One thing I've always loved about Isayama's art is his close up shots. I feel he is able to portray so much emotion in his close ups and a lot of it has to do with the way he draws eyes. I'm no artist so I can't really explain it but his eyes have always captivated me

These types of video content are very motivating. As Artists we aren't perfect...our Art has flaws. But there is natural beauty in our work which also has flaws. Besides that, this video has me resolving to rewatch Attack on Titan from the start. I haven't seen the final Arc as yet, might as well start over such a masterpiece and run through it.

I was actually wondering if you could do an artistic analysis on Tsukasa Hojo's style from the City Hunter series. Well, the difference is really only noticeable through his later work of Angel Heart, but putting them side-by-side really emphasizes the difference in styles between then and now, especially characters from the original City Hunter run looking more grounded than before.

I've always really loved his linework and the sense of life and urgency in it, and it's so interesting how you compared it to courtroom drawings. There's a real sense of movement in his artwork and a grittiness to the designs and expressions of the characters.

Isayama has inspired me to start working on my own comic! No matter how the artstyle looks, there's always room for improvement and if you feel embarrassed of old art (how ugly it looks, etc.), means you've grown as an artist. He showed me to never lose hope and push onward. I'll thank him for the rest of my life for that.

It’s so amazing to watch an artist Who not only grows artistically through time But also while the story progresses and the writing gets phenomenal. MI love his unique style and that he didn’t know exactly how the story would turn out original. No he was rejected initially he didn’t give up.

Reading and watching the anime has huge difference for me. You can feel the character's emotions more in the manga, Isayama is really good at drawing believable facial expression but unfortunately that trait often lost in the anime.

I honestly prefer artstyles like Isayama's with the sketchy aesthetic and messy lineart and shading, I feel it has more personality to it than the average anime inspired artstyle. Series like AoT and more recently Chainsaw man that have a "masterfully amateurish" tinge to them really inspire me and stick out at me because it feels like something even I could draw given time. While I don't want to discredit the skill behind it or of manga artists in general I'd honestly prefer if artists adopted styles that were easier for them to draw if it meant putting more of their energy into the story itself

SAMR no doubt they're incredible but unfortunately those two are in hiatus hell which is what I was saying about manga artists adopting styles they feel they can comfortably work with. Thankfully berserk will probably be finished even if it takes another decade but vagabond is realistically canned until further notice largely because the mangaka didn't enjoy the time it took to make a single chapter

Great video, as usual. I always look forward to hearing your thoughts. And this topic is particularly interesting. Art evolution makes a manga seem more special, especially if it's from an odd style to something unique and well-crafted. Makes, for instance, my 2 fav mangas all the more endearing.

i think Isayama is great modern proof of sticking with something even if it’s not going well. if he decided to hold himself back simply because his art wasn’t up to the manga standard we wouldn’t have such a great manga/anime but instead he decided to go through with making it and eventually he refined his style
