To me, Lando is giving Raccoon more than Honey Badger, they're less aggressive but just as resourceful, clever and versatile. I very much agree with the Raven for Connor, though. Also, the "WHAT" upon learning how long ago dinosaurs existed almost made me cry. So funny. Surprise!
@rideronthedrumbeat2 ай бұрын
Connor's description of visualizing something in your mind as "going higher" than your vision is exactly how I think of it too. The fact that Lando seems to only be able to describe it with words sounds like aphantasia to me. But I'd say not to worry about it too much. There are lots of artists with aphantasia and they do just fine.

As someone who studied art seriously for a number of years, I can relate to Lando’s talk about losing the passion. It sucks when your skill level plateaus, and you’re not satisfied with your work anymore, but you don’t have the time to dedicate to it and improve, so you just end up stopping altogether.

It was really interesting to learn the details about break dancing and it's history being deeply connected to dance since I was little. My Grandma was a line dancer and passed on her dance choreography binder/passion to me. Gene Kelly was my dance/music hero. So I really related to the conversation and loved learning something new about the art. With the news about the new merch being released directly on my birthday it has me more excited and makes it MORE of a birthday present. 💗I love it. Just as much as hearing Connor's acoustic guitar. He has a natural talent for it and an ear for what sounds good. I say that from my own lifelong passion for music. (Choir, vocal jazz and clarinet) When you both talk about it in length and showcase your shared passion for it I get a burst of happiness. Same with art. My grandfather got me into it and influenced me into going to art college. Like Lando I express my thoughts onto paper, speed just comes with creating as I think it. I just get hyper focused on the process. Validation is the dopamine built in from it being a childhood thing connected from the bond I had with grandpa. I correlate the joy from love, feedback is love and a motivation without it I feel the same as Connor (skill doubt/growth). Turok? I played it often with my bro and we both loved it too. It was interesting to get into the HP persona/animal spirit talk too because it is true you both are the opposite on the inside. Given Connor's soft side I'd pick possibly an owlet or raven or a fluffy wolf. As for Lando, perhaps a hawk or snapping turtle? Or maybe viper? Which correlates to the medieval talk. The choices match. I could see Lando as the fighter and Connor the peaceful sort when it came to surviving the era. Me? I'm too soft, loyal and peaceful too so that is where my inclination lays too just like my animal (fluffy sheep or a fox). I'd be a baker. That being said the vastness of space really does make us feel smaller in retrospect. I really look forward to these deep dives each week and getting to know you both more~! Thanks guys.

If knowing the age of the earth and size of the Sun makes you feel insignificant, try googling the age of the universe 😊 Also, Connor's patronus being a raven fits him so well! For Lando, I think a bear (not Panda, those big brown ones)? When he cares about someone he's like a teddy bear or Yogi bear but when he has strong negative feelings he could turn into the vicious ones in the forest (to protect and/or attack). Also, his cute warm bread sweater fits the bear image. Also unrelated, I like Connor's shirt. Thank you for the nice discussion about breakdancing, I never knew there was such an interesting perspective and interpretation to it! It's nice to know you guys are still trying new things, even if you may not feel the same excitement you felt as a child (and ofc you miss the feeling of diving into something and the thrill of the chase), it may not mean that your passion is any less, it could be more of a new way of looking at things and a mature way of approaching new interests. So good luck on your music journey you guys! Thank you for the nice hobbies and art talk! Both of you are Gryffindor in my book, I think you guys are brave and have the courage to move forward and do new things (the unknown is quite scary)

47:43 I relate to Connor's art plight. I loved animation, but I couldn't draw more complicated things from imagination and it was hard to keep things looking good even with reference. I learned and fell in love with 3D animation because it allowed me to have that animation creative outlet while not requiring the demanding skillset of drawing and keeping things on model. 3D modeling and animation is hard to get into, but is a great creative alternative to drawing

Them struggling to reconcile dinosaurs with the creation of modern calendars was so hilarious. Although by that same note, I was surprised about the diameter of the Earth. Think of car having 100,000+ miles on them, that means those cars have traveled around the Earth about 14 times in their lifetime. Now think of how many cars you might own in your lifetime, let's assume you hold onto a car for a long time, but not too long, about 10-12 years. You might travel the same distance as the diameter of Earth over 70 times in your life! That's crazy!

I think I can relate with Connor more than Lando about losing the drive for drawing. Although I was never quite as far along in my journey as Lando, I always enjoyed drawing in high school, but sometime around college I sorta just fell out of drawing and don't really do it anymore. I think it stemmed from a mixture of feelings of dissatisfaction with my art and not wanting to take that step to improve further. There's definitely more joy to be found in a hobby when you want to do it and you're discovering something new.

Being able to picture things in your head is very much a thing and it ranges greatly. From those that can't see anything at all to those that can picture a perfect rendering of it in their heads. Most people are somewhere in the middle but I know a few artists that can't see anything in their head at all which is pretty crazy.

Somehow, this week's episode went from serious to light-hearted in the span of seconds and I thoroughly enjoyed that balancing act! Unexpected but educational history lesson and fact sharing on breaking, certainly learned something new while listening to Lando share the knowledge and expertise he has in the field and how exactly it is he got into it! Never even was aware there are different categories such as power, style or musicality that counted towards judging or that people engaging in breaking are called b-boys/b-girls. My guess towards the origin of the name was actually closer to what Connor said, still it makes sense it was named the way it was! Very much liked the comparison to it being akin to fantasy, I see what our professor was getting at here. It has this closeness to skill, an ability set with a group of people working together. The swapping out of group members to adjust to your opponent's specialty as well as power does somewhat remind me of a Pokémon battle. It's fascinating how crew members all have their own individual names and how they choose it. Wishing Lando all the best getting back into it, hope it goes smoothly! Sorry to hear about the hat story though, that sounded like it was Metal Gear Hat: Phantom Pain... When you talked about your guitar adventures, I found myself agreeing with Lando's statement later on where he said playing and learning in general is harder the older you get. In your earlier years, you don't have that many problem retaining/storing information while you struggle once you hit a certain age. Might not be the universal experience for everyone but it's there. He was on point as well saying if you have a specific inclination towards a skill/subject, it's easier to acquire the knowledge. Nevertheless, learning is possible with enough motivation and interest to broaden your horizons and that's something I love! Everyone starts small and every day gives you a new opportunity to learn, after all. What resonated with me most was the following part where Prof talked about art, that hit extremely close to home. As someone who's been drawing as a hobby for a long time now, finding this passion in drawing can become so difficult at times... At one point, art turns mechanical due to that. Which is why I agree wholeheartedly with needing some stones in your path to overcome to feel this sense of success afterwards. That you mastered it now, that the path is clear and you've made clear progress towards improving. The magic you felt as a kid when you doodled, throwing one drawing out after the other like you're on a grind spoke to me too. Though, the creative slump hasn't stopped me from putting to paper what makes me happy and I'm happy Lando found exactly that by writing and creating music! Those little moments where we look at something we've created and are proud of it is what makes it worth it, the wonders of discovering new methods to get better notwithstanding. Which segways into the part where you mentioned conceptualizing things in your mind with that struggle of aphantasia tied to it. The mind is a fickle place, it's interesting to me how people can conjure up images in their head to varying degrees of clearness or not at all in some cases. Questions corner was fun as usual with your guesses as to what house you'd fit into and what your patronus would be. For Lando, my guess would be wolf with its high intelligence, complexity and the ability to function well in a group setting by taking care of their loved ones. Connor on the other hand gives me the image of a crow/raven like Lando pointed out or of a dog considering they can engage in the silliest antics while being the gentlest goobers. Medieval job choices were on point for both of you. Last part is what sent my sides into orbit, the sentence "Did the bible happen after dinosaurs?" was enough to end me. 😂 While I commend the theory of 15 to 20 billion lions outsmarting the sun, I fear they'd be toast before being able to engage thanks to the sun's immense heat and radiation. It's mind blowing to think about how old our universe is, not to mention how many versions of a planet can fit into another. Thanks for another great episode, as always eagerly awaiting the next one! Hope both of you have/had a blast attending Anime Impulse!

super interesting episode this week! didn't expect something more serious going in, but the talk about hobbies and art really got me thinking about things that i find personal enjoyment in. i think the whole ''there needs to be a challenge'' part is very true, there's nothing quite like realizing that you've improved and gotten over an obstacle, and it's honestly way more rewarding than just plainly 'being good', imo. but i also understand connor's need for validation, i think i wouldn't do quite a few things if it wasn't for the fact that there's other people who like my work... it'd kinda be like, ''what's the point?'' even tho i *really* wish i could just do things for myself. definitely one of my fave discussions from the pod so far! as for the patronus: agree that connor's would be a raven, as for lando... maybe a mink? also, i now feel the desperate need to fall into the breakdancing rabbit hole and research more of its history... thanks, lando. the conversation at 1:09:20 makes my head hurt

The role and fate of a jester depended on the king and the culture of the country. In some places a jester's point was to say what no one else could. Like, if peasants hated the king, the jester could make it in JEST, and use that as a socially acceptable shield that even the king would understand and agree with. But you should still laugh at the jester and say it's a joke, never agree. The king, privately, would then consider the implications of what was said. But in some places the king might execute a jester for saying that. Really depended on the time and place. Some places preferred "smart" jesters who used wit to make fun of and criticize things, others used "dumb" jesters who were likely mentally deficient and so on and who's actions were strange due to their limited understanding of social mores and such. But typically jesters never gave any advice, especially strategy, but they were the unfiltered, uncensored "voice" of the times, whether of the public or the nobles. The guy who could, and should, say what otherwise had to be silent. Also, a royal court jester is very different from a festival jester, and different limitations apply. Of course, there were exceptions, some of which are really weird(and after medieval times). At some point in the 1600s(unless I misremember greatly), court jesters were largely gone from Europe, but sometimes replaced by court dwarfs and blacks, but they had a somewhat different role. (for anyone interested, read on Wikipedia about Gustav Badin for the latter)
