I love the sence in the movie Forrest Gump when Forrest says "Some years later, that nice young man from England was on his way home to see his little boy and was signing some autographs, and for no particular reason at all, somebody shot him." it's so sad to see the look on Lennon's face when he says that line

Agreed. I was just thinking of that scene while watching Chris' video. I know they used some early CGI for other prominent people in the movie like JFK and LBJ, but I was always curious as to why they picked a somewhat downer scene for John with Forrest on Cavett's show. Accurate given the current events in the timeframe of the movie, I suppose. I was in my dorm as a freshman in 1980 at the time...the whole floor was in a state of shock. RIP John.

I am a music teacher at the school I work at, and two of my biggest passions in life are music and history... when you mix them together, it's the best combination ever. At the moment, I'm teaching my students about pop music history these days, and I go through the evolution of pop music decade by decade. I like to link stuff together, for example what you mentioned about Buddy Holly and him being an inspiration to John Lennon, absolutely crucial to understand how and why things happen. Absolutely loved this reaction and this video about my favorite member of The Beatles, thanks for posting this!

I remember when we heard about this on the radio. I was too young to know who John Lennon was, but I remember the reaction of my Dad, who was driving us home in his truck. He pulled over to the shoulder of the road and I just remember an ashen expression on his face. My Dad is a very stoic person, so this was an event that really sticks in my memory and I knew right away that this event was especially meaningful. As an adult, and knowing the musical genius of Lennon, I now understand the reaction. What a tragedy.

"Chapmans faith blinded him to certain things" Yeah, like what Lennon was actually talking about when he said the Beatles were more popular than Jesus, he simply meant more people listened to their music than went to church, it was never a bash on religion, just a simple fact that got weirdly taken out of context and blown way out of proportion.

One thing that the video didn't mention was that, in the morning of December 8th 1980, Mark Chapman was strolling around the Dakota and saw their housekeeper Helen and John's son Sean. Mark proceeded to shake Sean's hand and call him a beautiful boy (you know, after the Double Fantasy song). It really makes me wonder how he could go through with it after physically seeing John's five-year-old son, and knowing John was a decent man after meeting him.

He was going to kill David Bowie next, and had a front row ticket to bowie's production of "The Elephant Man" to shoot him on stage the night after Lennon. John and Yoko had front row tickets as well. Bowie would go on to say that noticing those three empty seats in the front row made it incredibly hard to get through the performance.

I'm a long-time Beatles fan, was introduced to them when The Beatles: Rock Band was first released. I even went to the John Lennon museum in Japan before it closed. I've also long been fascinated by John Lennon's death, I also read somewhere that Hinckley was deeply traumatized by Lennon's death in the months prior to shooting Reagan. Out of all the musician's stories I've heard, I think the Beatles' story one of the most tragic and ironic, preaching for love and peace yet one of them was gunned down, the other one died before hitting 60 due to cancer. You can especially feel it in their last single "Real Love". Fascinating to see that you too are another music fan Chris!

@@ericbyo9472 Cynthia herself said he beat her just once. Calm down, I'm not saying that excuses it -- that's still so fucking shitty and I hate him for it (as a massive Beatles fan, I was really sad when I learnt this). But saying "beat the shit out of his wife" seems a bit sensationalist. And he truly was a horrible father to Julian, not sure if he actually beat him, but facts point to him being an abusive and absent father nonetheless.

No sense of direction/core values, probably because his parents separated while still a child (having to live under the care of his aunt and her husband for much of his youth) and his mother died while he was still 17. I think he improved by the time he died though.

The Strawberry Fields Forever memorial in Central Park is quite nice and appropriate, particularly given that I believe Yoko Ono could see it from his apartment. I think John Lennon would have approved of the memorial artistically. But my goodness what a sad story. Maybe Chapman was legally fit to stand trial, but he was clearly not in his right mind. A very gifted songwriter died through a series of events I'm not really sure could have been prevented. It shows how random and chaotic as well as how precious life is.

I was in college at the time. My then boyfriend and I were sleeping, it was about 1 or 2 am when his best friend, Eric pounded on the door of our apartment. When we got up to open the door, Eric was saying loudly, "They shot him, They shot him, They shot him! "John Lennon!" We're all up for the day to talk about what happened. There were tears and shock, as we tried to digest what happened and why. His statement back in the 60's about the Beatles being more popular than Jesus Christ, obviously caught a lot of flak from religious, conservative America. So he backpedaled and made a national public apology. I thought it was a good thing to do on his part, but, he was kinda right at the time too.

Love hearing all the stories of Buddy Holly on this channel. My grandparents grew up in Lubbock at the same time Holly and Waylon Jennings did. My grandmother actually went to high school with him. They weren’t the biggest fan of Holly because he was kinda a troublemaker. The day he died was the day they felt something for him. Buddy was the spirit of Lubbock and west Texas as a whole. They had all kinds of stories about Jennings, Holly and Mac Davis.

After the shooting of Lennon and Reagan, many states banned Catcher in the Rye for many years. I read Catcher in the Rye a few times. When I was in my teens and 20's I sympathized with Holden Caufield, when I got older I better understood what Salinger was getting at, that Caufield was a snot-nosed kid who thought he knew better than everybody and thought he knew how the world worked.

Seriously? I'd never heard that before. That just makes the USA seem even more irrational from the perspective of someone abroad. "People keep getting shot in our great nation. Many of them die. We need to do something!" "You're quite right, it's horrendous. We need a ban to prevent this sort of thing from happening ever again." "Exactly, a ban is what we need." "So, we're agreed. We'll ban... the book they were reading when they shot people with their guns."

I was 14 years old when this happened. I still remember watching tv when they announced his murder-it was the first celebrity death that really hit me deep. I grew up listening to the Beatles, but John was always around in the zeitgeist. I was working with my dad in his workshop in the mid-70s with the talk radio playing and they were talking about John not being allowed to travel due to his pot conviction. Years later, I read the story behind Lorne Michaels offering $1000 to the Beatles to reunite on SNL-he seriously thought that they might just take him up on it live on tv. Turns out that John and Paul were hanging out in NYC and watching the show and actually considered going to 30 Rock!

Thank you for this thoughtful presentation. I would like to point out that John was the subject of threats for a number of years. In fact in Memphis, 1966, firecrackers went off on the stage during the show and everyone looked at John to see if he was hit. John however, was a rebel. Sinatra and Presley walked around with bodyguards and an entourage. John would have none of that scene and lived on his own wits and instincts. Further John was a more solitary chap, and rejected almost all proposals for security. Also remember that John came of age in the worst slums of Hamburg, during the late fifties and early sixties, and learned to handle drunks, drug dealers, and angry customers, as a rite of passage. All of these experiences fostered a false sense of security. As to the statement about John looking in the eyes of his killer and asking, “is that all you want?” is haunting. During the early days of the Beatles, when fans threatened to tear apart the boys on stage, John literally could not see the threat because of his near sightedness (he refused to wear glasses) and therefore, was often shocked when fans got on stage. He commented, “I feel safe when I have me guitar in front of me. I feel like they can’t get me.” In this case, my thought is that Lennon looked exactly at the threat and knew something was up.

I have many mixed feelings about the focus on the books and games that apparently inspire violent acts. On one hand, there's definite truth to killers using books and other things to justify their unjustifiable acts. On the other hand, there's the danger of folks turning those pieces of media into scapegoats, seeing them as the major cause of violent behavior, despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary (and often ignoring the full, complex network of reasons behind the alarming actions).

At the end of the day his childhood easily had the biggest affect on his mental health. Not getting therapy as soon as possible let his obsession and anger fester till he acted on it. Books, movies and video games are not the problem, raising your kids in an abusive environment is the problem.
@christianmayer7432
@christianmayer7432 2 жыл бұрын
@@braxton6456 Yeah, I think it is far too easy for politicians to blame "the media" (like this book, video games or movies), which you can easily ban. In Germany, we had to endure for decades the censorship in media, especially for media which was made for adults. Only in recent years the situation got much better and nowadays there is only censorship regarding illegal symbols (for example the depiction of the swastika in video games, but even this wall is breaking). It is much harder to fix the real causes: social inequality, violence in families and - as you correctly stated - living in an abusive environment. And there is the fact that some persons are simply prone to mental distabilities and some will eventually snap. So it is easy for some politicians to blame a simple scapegoat whose banishment can be depicted as a symbol for a cleaning process: "You don't have to be worried, the bad piece of media is indexed." As if reality is so simple.
@christianmayer7432

@Alex Chow I agree with you. Besides this book, Chapman would have found any other book or piece of media which would gave him a "conviction" to to his deed. It is ridiculous to blame Caufield for the behaviour of an obviously mentally ill person.

I didn't read every comment in this thread, so I don't know if anyone in the community has brought this up yet, but James Taylor heard the shots that night that took John's life. He was living in a building next to the Dakota, and it was an unseasonably warm night for December, so he had the windows open. He heard 5 shots and heard the cops come and had no idea what had happened until after the fact.

This video will be very interesting for me because I grew up with so much music from the 50's to the 80's due to my adoptive parents being older when they took me and my brother in. My dad was in his mid to late 40s and my mom was in her early 50s when I was born. This meant that whenever we would go for long car rides for vacations and such my dad would be listening to things like Johnny Cash, Elvis, The Beatles and more. I eventually picked up a love off 80's rock from my half brother who introduced me to bands like ACDC and Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and more. But The Beatles always did have a soft spot in my heart and I especially like John Lennon. It wasn't until I was a teenager that I started to look into him as a person and the things surrounding his death. Now I don't know how much of what I have read is true or not but from my research I kinda learned that he wasn't really the greatest guy personally. Which did make me really sad as it impacted how I viewed his music. I have since then kinda learned to separate music from the artist. But yeah gonna be cool to learn more about him.

I was on my way to work when I heard that Lennon had been shot. An older man told me, not in a casual way, but he wasn't my generation and it didn't hit him quite in the same way. He was talking more about it, but didn't realize that I was just too stunned to pay attention.

Just so you know, John hinkley is free, he even has a KZbin channel where he uploads videos of himself singing original songs and covers. It is quite interesting to see a guy who attempted to assassinate a president make KZbin videos. For anyone wondering his channel is under his name.

I honestly don't think I'd be "starstruck" to meet anyone famous. I haven't thought about it for years, but when I was a kid I definitely admired Harrison Ford. Today, however, I don't think I'd be impressed by meeting anyone. lol, it's called Getting Old.

It was John, Paul, George and Pete, Ringo came later when they sacked Pete. John Lennon wasn't claiming to be more popular than Jesus, he was just expressing a fact.

A couple of facts about the Beatles: 1) Paul was a fan of Buddy Holly, even tend to dress like him. 2) The T in Beatles is depicted as capital to show the word beat.

After watching this video I can't help but think of what Ricky Gervais says about famous people pontificating to regular people. I think that's all I'll say about this. I'll let you read into that what you want with the caveat that no one deserves to be shot down in the street for what they say or do. I'm glad he's still in jail.

I grew up listening to the Beatles and that was in the 90’s! The Beatles have transcended generations and I think the killing of John Lennon did the same. I find myself coming to KZbin to look up events I was not a live for to see. And listening to Howard Cosell tell the world in the middle of a football that John Lennon had been killed was just so surreal. Just like watching the interview in this video. Well done as always. Another topic that I think would be interesting that I’ve looked into quite a bit would be to do a video on the Day the Music Died, if there are any videos on KZbin of that. Such a sad story

The worst lifelong depressions that I deal with are the men who grew up watching their mothers beaten and were too young to stop it. The frustrated need to protect family combined with the physical impossibility to do so often sets up a lifelong unresolved tension.

Between 1966 and 1970 I was not aware that the Beatles were still around. Then a girl at college reintroduced me to their music and I was surprised at the change they had undergone. I was also unaware about who was contributing what to their albums. Once Paul's love songs were released separately, and John and Yoko released their albums I could see the difference. Still, the edginess and creativity that the band collectively forged together remains unmatched to this day. A lot of today's songs seem just too safe or fail to tell a story that resonates with many people. Is it a little too much whining or just the stifling nature of covid protocols effecting creativity in music..

14:41 - The definition of first degree murder is different in New York than it is in many states- NY murder laws actually make no distinction between "spur of the moment" and premeditated murders, provided that the intention was to kill. First degree murder requires there to be specific circumstances behind the murder- such as for the victim to be an on-duty public servant such as a police officer, first responder, or corrections officer, for the victim to be killed in order to prevent testimony to a prior crime (or if they were killed as a result of a testimony), or for the murder having been done for-hire. Any other intentional murder that doesn't fall into one of those categories is usually second degree, even if it was premeditated. Not a lawyer, and I invite anyone more knowledgeable to correct me if I'm mistaken. I learned that while serving on a NY grand jury, however, and this was explained to us by a few ADAs- so I'm reasonably confident in my explanation. :)

Nixon started the Vietnam War??? Lennon had just started getting his life and career back together. So tragic. Would have been fascinating to see if the band would have gotten back together, with what happened to other groups like the Eagles. There is a sweet moment in the film "Yesterday" (a science fiction/fantasy comedy about a musician going to a parallel universe where no one but he remembers The Beatles) concerning John Lennon.
