Having worked in offices as an assistant and clerk typist for many years - I feel the real job is even harder than portrayed here. I think the movie was well done. It's a film you have to slowly take in - it's meant to simmer in the mind and be thought-provoking. I am glad they made this movie.

@@strafer8764 I'm saying the ending made sense because the movie is more than Harvey Weinstein, it's about women being objectified in this field of work. Just finished The Assistant and found your video to watch afterwards and you are so spot on that it’s painful. It wasn’t an office setting but I had the unfortunate experience of being something of a Tess/Jane hybrid. And let me tell anyone blaming or criticizing Jane for not doing more something, it’s not so simple nor does it mean instant victory. I spoke up and in less than two days I was discredited, lost all of the people that claim would support me calling out the man abusing his power, and in the end pressured to take back my words for my own safety, but meant I was labelled a person that makes false accusations. It wasn’t til 7 years later, while he still is in his position of power, the people who defended him and protected him, started speaking out and reaching out to me apologizing for how they let me down. I’m not sharing my story to dissuade people from coming forward, but hopefully get people to understand that it’s not simple or easy and will instantly make things better, and that they shouldn’t judge how someone else deals with these issues and abuse of power.

as I am from Brazil it is almost impossible to see smaller films here, but finally i got to see this movie, and my god what a spectacular film, minimalist photography, the absurdly controlled direction showing only what is necessary for the viewer's understanding is the advance of history, The performances are good, but Julia Garner's performance is phenomenal, Retracted, contained, trapped within, and everything we see and your discomfort about work, decisions and colleagues. And we see it all in their facial expressions. And one of the best parts of the film is the edition that puts us inside the story, in fact with shoots that make the story look like reality. For me an impeccable film that within its proposal to be a drama about abuse, sexism, anxiety and the pressure to pursue your dreams (whatever the cost) and still be something beyond everything that I spoke... Simply absurd... Claps for one of best films of this year... 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

The Assistant is depressing if not nihilistic in its day in the life documentary style of entry Admin Clerk with big dreams of being a producer who is helpless the to the exploitation of young aspiring starlets she bares witness to at the hands of her boss which is often hinted at everytime Jane has to clean his office, everytime she has to cover for him when confronted over the phone by his suspicious wife and the intern she knows was blatantly hired for her looks. And is even yelled at by the man himself. The helplessness of her situation is made worse by the blind eye turned by the rest of her colleagues. Especially by her HR Manager who reminds her how many people would give their right arm for Jane's job and the looming threat of being blacklisted and the loss of her film production dreams if she ever talked. With no score every sound is heightened to build a sense of dread and the cinematography is bleak enough to highlight the office space which is meant to be an aspirational haven as a mundane hell and climate of deafening silence surrounding her bosses sexual misconduct or constant infidelities have contributed to Jane's gilded cage with only the relief that she's not considered attractive enough to be his next victim on the casting couch.

The cinematography, A. The acting, A. The lighting, really big A. The sound, wow....A. But the biggest flaw in this movie is the pacing. The editing choices on how long a take the viewer is watching is way too over generous. Who ever was in the editing room really made a bad decision in staying on every shot like 2-4 seconds over their intended stay (once we the audience see it and understand we get it, we don't need to linger) then that causes DULL pacing. The pacing ruined it for me, it felt like a chore trying to get through it. I appreciate the director's attempt and applaud the cast and crew for their amazing work but what ever happened on in that editing room really affected this production. slight spoilers below... Was this a movie about sexual harassment in the work space? If so then the observations were on point but we didn't find out anything it was way to "audience dependent" on that we had to assume her boss was like that. Now yes that does happen but the scene in which the HR guy was telling Jane "Julia Garner" that "Well issn't she a grown woman?". Yes its a weird unprofessional sexual and non ethical vibe at the work place, however he does have a point....all the women that Jane's boss supposedly (never shown) sleeps with are adults who can make their own decisions. For that I give the production credit for posing good points on both playing fields. Also posing the fact that our now-a-day HR workforce is corrupt and doesn't give a f&*% about women....but it was flawed by wrong timing pacing which ruined the film for me and the reliance on too many assumptions with no proof in sight. Also the ending was not good at all with the music on and off and not a viby choice for that the character was expressing in my honest opinion....better score at the end could have been used...that too also jarred me from the film. However I do get the controversy this movie was trying to go for and the real corruption in our work force and work ethics among today's society. Bringing these things to light is very important and needs to be acknowledged. Good review.

@bodyofhope
@bodyofhope 4 жыл бұрын
The extended scenes on mundane tasks were meant to exentuate the purposelessness and mindless nature of her work. The audience is supposed to feel bored along with her, empathizing as she checks the clock on the wall. As a former assistant, I recalled similar experiences. Making sure the boss had everything he needed, when he needed it. Making his life as comfortable as possible-- even to the point of arranging things outside of my comfort, and being forced to lie about it. "Let's keep this between us" or "just leave that off the books this time" always followed by a little gift, or a big favor to me. I didn't find it boring, I found it triggering... and many will. Just as some might find a war movie boring, and others would find it intense. It's a pressure cooker movie.

I just saw this movie and if this is the way every movie production place is, then they should all be shut down. I realize there will movie is illustrating the degradation that people go thru to get ahead, but I don’t think it’s just in this industry. I was really appalled to see how humans treat each other. But I see this same thing in the industry I’m in. You might have someone that’s very experienced; a super hard worker, and very dedicated person. Something goes wrong and they are treated like they are a 5 year old who got caught stealing cookies from a cookie jar. Just the way people in power treat others is sickening. A complete absence of any real charity. One thing I do know, you can get away with that crap now, but there will be a time you will pay for it, and then some. If this is the future of the way folks are treated, the human race has failed. People talk about progressive thought and progressive this or that. We haven’t really progressed in anything except downgrading others that are at some lower level than ourselves. We really need that fixed.

Not a experience to immediately gain pleasure, but tell a story and communicate truth about humanity . - A real film. The slow pace and long takes.. This film really made me feel like I was there in the office, in Janes shoes. This film was uncomfortable and heartbreaking on many levels watching the turmoil going through this main character as she learns this is the reality of the world she wants to work in and what she dreamed to be in. So complex and feels like a documentary and character analysis all at the same time. I really liked it. True reflection of the Weinstein debacle. I agree with your opening statement, "Complicit".

I do feel like there were many moments that didn't add to the narrative or her character. Some of Jane's(?) Menial tasks were just that. Not every moment felt like it was necessary and I think when the pace is already so slow, that wasted moments feel so much longer and heavier. Furthermore, it would've been interesting to see more moments like the girl in the elevator. Where there's something expected or something not given. I think, for an average viewer, that not having more experienced from the women makes it seem consensual and (outside the office environment) less problematic. Especially since it's ambiguous enough where you could make the argument that the main lead is paranoid. And, having worked an office job, her role seems less stressful than I'd imagine. It's a long day but not a hard day. I think It makes her reactions feel less earned. I love what this film is trying to do. But most ppl will not go into the film with the context you gave. And most will not assume it. And I think the film fails to bring that realization of this slow burn, slow deteriorating experience in a toxic work environment where all facets are complicit to potential abuse and manipulation. I think because of these flaws, the film despite it's best effort doesn't quite achieve what it sets out to do. It'd be interesting to see this remade with the same ending (minus the really unnecessary and jarring piano score) but with the day to day pieces more finely chosen.

as far as wastes of my time it could have been worse. popular among the male-bashing crowd. aside from stating the obvious there is absolutely zero new or interesting or noteworthy. and who works in an office lit by a night light? just a ploy to make it seem more menacing captivating. actually, this was a pretty bad waste of time

That movie is easily among the worst movies I have ever seen. Incredibly boring and uneventful. Literally nothing happens the entire movie. The highlight is a complaint to hr for something she accuses her boss of doing which lacks evidence. I thought I was watching a version of the office without any humour lol. It sucks so bad it should get a job at a massage parlour. 💩💩💩 P.s. thanks for your youtube review. I had to watch it to make sure I didn't miss something. 🙏👍

I like Julia's acting but this movie is literally the worst movie ever. This could have maybe been a great short film. A day in the life of an assistant and that's it, eould have added a spoiler tag but there's nothing to spoil. 95% on Rotten Tomatoes yeah no. People are afraid to say anything negative about it because it's about the me too movement. As if somehow if you dislike it then you must support what men like her boss do. Save yourselves 1.5 hours that i will never get back and watch anything else.

Oh my, oh my. So very interesting to see progressive reviewers review this utterly horrible movie. Watching paint dry is far better, because with paint theres never an expectation of anything happening. The story isn’t even concluded. It abruptly ends as if that is supposed to be shockingly artistic and deep. I think it’s a cheap way of covering up the lack of plot development which was a consistent theme. It’s a mostly dull movie from start to finish outside of one scene.
