I had thought this show was supposed to be about opening dialogs between theists and atheists, not just about farming bad arguments to refute for entertainment. If thats the kind show they want, then maybe they need a different brand, because i would rather not have people see this and assume the sum total of my experience of being an atheist is arguing with people. dont get me wrong, i have seen some pretty entertaining arguments on this show, and thoroughly enjoyed them, but it feels like there used to be more to the show than just that.

Anti-intellectualism seem to go hand-in-hand with religion. a lot of people who believe in religion seem to be bad at geography math history science perhaps out of willful ignorance because facts are in direct contrast to their belief.
@dalinkwent2024 жыл бұрын
Put another way: The more educated people get, the more they see the more common interpretations of religious ideas make no sense at all. One of the biggest things science has on religion, is the willingness among most scientists to admit when their theory is wrong and try a new direction. I can understand someone who walks around believing in God because they want to. I cannot understand people who keep trying to twist facts and reality to fit a belief that clearly isn't based on either concept.
@BlursedSYNthesis4 жыл бұрын
I agree in general, but atheists are not immune to scientific ignorance either. For example, 55:22, matts coin argument, while it works on a classical scale, is not true for reality on the quantum scale. What he is arguing for, in quantum terms would be called "hidden variables" and they were proven not to exist* by a group of experiments known as the bell inequalities. There is a middle ground between existence and non-existence, its called superposition. *Technically they only disproved "local" hidden variables, so their could still be non-local ones, but most quantum interpretations abandoned the need for hidden variables all together. yet matt has decided that logic dictates that things must either be in one state or another, therefore it must be true. The universe doesnt give a single solitary fuck about our logical systems, and his argument here is no more factual than the kalam cosmological argument. Pure Logic doesnt make something true, evidence does.

The religious crisis of God and the existence of Evil If God is all-knowing, all-powerful, and all-loving why does evil still exist? If Evil exists and God wants to destroy it, then God is not all-powerful If Evil exists and God wants it to exist, then God is not all-loving.
@codyzed3314 жыл бұрын
They make excuses for it (God works in mysterious ways, it is humans that allow children to be raped and starve, not god, etc...). In any case, "evil exists" is not an argument against god's existence, and I never bring it up in the rare occasions that I talk about whether god exists with people.

"How do you people believe in morality without believing in god" We have to be close to about a 1000 times that Matt has answered that question. You should find a suitable celebration animation, etc... to play when we hit that number. Or did we have that years ago and I missed it ? :-)
@Britishhick3 жыл бұрын
It disturbs me how difficult it is for the religionists to comprehend morality without a daddy holding a stick over their ass. My morality is based around causing the least harm and promoting the most well-being (very similar to how most of the hosts describe it, particularly Matt) and it galls me that they pretend they can't understand how that works. "But why is murder wrong without God?!" Do you have empathy? Are you a herd animal that benefits from a stable, healthy society? Does it improve YOUR life to not live in chaos? This shit is easy. But it does scare me that there's apparently people who would be murderous psychopaths without a God, because your brain is broke as hell if you can't figure this out.

Scripture is broadly defined as the sacred writings of a religion. What I don't get is why anyone would spend any time trying to *interpret* it. Why would anyone think writings from people long ago are anything more than a historical matter? Being a lifelong atheist has been easy, because it's really little more than recognizing the *initial improbability* of all religions. It's not complicated.

On the subject of morality: I learned morality from my father, who was a doctor with a great amount of scientific knowledge and understanding, and he was always an Atheist, and he was the most moral man I have ever known. He believed in “Property-based” morality. To define property: Your Property is your life and all non-procreative derivatives of your life (this precludes your children as your property). Your property includes your life, your mind, your body, your thoughts (intellectual property), your energy, your labor, your possessions, etc. The only wrong (sin?, crime?) is coercion, which he defined as any transgression or violation or attack on anyone’s property. What is the motivation to being moral? If you violate someone’s property, you have sanctioned, or given your approval of coercion, which gives others the permission to violate you in return. The deterrent to immoral behaviour is the consequences of your behaviour. You are the sovereign ruler of your Life and Property, and you have the right to defend your sovereignty by any means. In a society where everyone understands this, violation of property will be rare.

@pan dimensional super being bojangles The Drake equation is really nothing more than idle speculation. But, given the size of the universe, and assuming that abiogenesis is true, it is quite likely that we're not alone. The rest of what you said was indeed "woo-woo". We don't know if there are other dimensions, and saying things like "HIGHER DIMENSION" is meaningless without defining both words and giving evidence for them. You might as well use the word magic. "A BEING WOULD HAVE CAPACITIES AND ABILITIES ABOVE OUR 3-DIMENSIONAL UNIVERSE" So, not only can't you provide evidence of other dimensions, or that being could exist there, you simply assumed somehow that something living there would have certain abilities because....?????? BTW, is your CAPS LOCK on? Knowing that writing in all caps is bad form, is online etiquette 101.
@SamIAm-kz4hg4 жыл бұрын
@pan dimensional super being bojangles First of all, learn how to fucking spell. It's "actually you're WRONG!" and "you're just a gay". If YOU'RE going to try to insult people then at least look like YOU'RE not 12. "scientists have BOTH performed experiments PROVING a fourth SPATIAL DIMENSION exists!" Incorrect. Science doesn't work this way. There may be evidence that supports the idea, but generally speaking scientists don't speak the way you are. "and NASA says it has discovered a universe where time FLOWS BACKWARDS!" No. This is more bullshit from you. Feel free to link some reputable sites. KZbin isn't one of them, in case you don't know this. You might want to try Google Scholar. "USE ABIO-GENESIS/EVOLUTION/BILLIONS OF YEAR OLD UNIVERSE/MULTIVERSE AND DRAKES EQUATION TO GIVE HIGH PROBABILITY THAT" Abiogenesis is an unproven idea. Although I happen to personally think that it is likely. Evolution has been shown to be real. But it doesn't in any way explain a god-like being. I'm not sure what you think a "billion year old" universe has to do with things. We have no evidence that beings with godlike powers could exist, no matter the time frame. There may be some evidence that supports the multiverse theory, but it is far from conclusive. The Drake equation does not guarantee life. It is a WILD estimate at the probability of life. So, out of your list of "evidence", nothing really screams out that there must be a god or gods out there. Do you see the difference between when adults speak and what it is that you are doing? Thanks for playing.
