Beautiful Father Mike. Practical atheists... that was an excellent way of explaining when one turns away from God; for any reason. It seems that I was once a "practical atheist". I now think of God all day long, and into the night.

If God didn't have control of this world (particularly the spirit world of angels around us) Satan would destroy this world. Thank you Jesus for dying for us to join our spiritual life.

That is, assuming that our society only consists of psychopaths and sociopaths who feel no empathy and who are only held back by the fear of an eternal punishment. I digress, Adolf Hitler himself was a Christian and a creationist who strongly believed in the existence of a god and that belief did not keep him from commanding the murder of over 6 million jews. So as shown in the example, bad people will do bad things. They aren't held back even if they believe in a divine rule. And good people will do good things because if there is no god, there still is empathy and love, even if they are not some supernatural magic, they are real chemistry in our brain that won't vanish just because we don't believe in some specific god. If the only source of your morals is an appeal to divine authority, you will easily get into a mindset where anything god presumably says or allows becomes permissible. That won't happen with humanitarian rights because they are not legitimized on an authority figure.

Great homily. I feel like in the last year or so, I realized that somehow my whole life had changed and I lost my desire to do all the worldly (and sinful) things I had been doing my entire adult life. And I pray all through the day. I'm not perfect by any means but it's just so strange how that happened.

Today Is the Feast of Saint Thomas Aquinas Priest and Doctor of the Church: Saint Thomas Aquinas was born in the Year 1225 into a Family of the Count of Aquino. Saint Thomas was educated at the Abbey of Monte Cassino and the University of Naples. In the Year 1244 He joined the Dominican Order. Considered one of the greatest philosophers and theologians of all time He is called the " Angelic Doctor. " He exhibited an unparalleled mastery of scholastic philosophy and a profound holiness of life. Pope Leo XIII declared Him Patron of Catholic Schools. His monumental work Summa Theologica was yet unfinished when Saint Thomas died near Terracina in the Year 1274. Saint Thomas Aquinas Priest and Doctor of the Church Pray for Us! Thank You Rev. Mike O'Connor & God Bless! ⛪

It's the ultimate irony that the same people who would claim atheists to be hedonists are the ones that think life becomes meaningless if you don't get to live forever. If there isn't a cool afterlife party as a reward for all the "good" points you collect, then in the minds of these people it all becomes meaningless. So you are telling me life isn't meaningless for the billions and billions of people that would suffer for *ever* in eternity in a hellfire? You think that somehow adds meaning to their existence? If anything, religion takes away meaning in life. Why is life meaninglful, if it pends out into eternity? Doesn't a year lose its significance if you get to be conscious forever. For me personally it is scarier to be concious and feel forever than to be concious for 80 years. And it adds meaning to life, it places a timer on it and makes every minute valuable. You won't meet the people you love a second time.

With all due respect, it seems to me that you are determined to read your own ideology into Father Mike’s message. If I may ask, have you read the Bible, more specifically, the New Testament? If you have, it says clearly multiple times that eternal life is not meaningless. Life just becomes more meaningful with time, not the opposite. It’s not like the organic nature of earth and humanity where things denigrate and lose value over time. It’s not like that at all. I strongly encourage you to read the Bible and study the lives of the Saints. That’s what helped me gain a greater understanding of life and life eternal. Many prayers for you and God God bless.

@@lesliehasenkampf7088 What the bible says doesn't matter, the bible could claim that humans can fly if they really wanted to and it wouldn't make it the truth. It is pretty obvious, that life becomes meaningless if it goes on forever in some form. Then every interaction/ every moment can be repeated ad infinitum, thus rendering the current moment infinity meaningless. Just because the bible says it becomes more meaningful, doesn't mean that's the truth. Eternity can't gradually become more meaningful with time because there is no time in eternity.
