In May 1864, two major campaigns were launched by the United States against the Confederacy: The Overland Campaign pitting Ulysses S. Grant against Robert E. Lee in Virginia and The Atlanta Campaign pitting William T. Sherman against Joseph E. Johnston in Georgia. The Atlanta Campaign wasn't the bloodiest Campaign of the two, but it was arguably the most important in 1864 because it gave the Union and Abraham Lincoln's election Campaign a morale boost, prior to the 1864 elections in November. In this episode, I cover the Battle of New Hope Church.

My great great grandfather and my great great great uncle both of the 32nd Tennessee Infantry Browns brigade Stewart's Division CSA fought at New Hope Church

My GGGG Uncle, Augustus Beall was wounded at this battle. He had enlisted in the Dahlgren Guards 3rd Mississippi Infantry, early in the war.

@@backyardboosters9128 Jefferson Davis all his people are traitors to the United States. Lincoln got elected, and the southern plantation class decided to rebel against the United States get over it.

So sorrowful was the story of the three brothers. It reminds me of Saving Private Ryan where three of four brothers are killed in a short period of time and in the end, only one made it back home alive. Also in the movie was the famed Bixby Letter written by President Lincoln to Mrs. Bixby informing her of the deaths of all five of her sons. There is a law now in place that ensures that parents who have all of their children serving in the military get at least one home safely.

I lived less than a mile from New Hope Church for 14 years. They have a nice Confederate cemitary right across the street. The old church still stands with the newer one just across the road. They have a couple of nnice monuments up there as well.

I was born and raised on this battlefield. My family fought in this battle, lived in this area (and tended to the wounded after), and had family buried in the graveyard…in the 1970s the worse airplane crash in Georgia history also occurred on this ground…
