Incredible content all around an amazing Movie. I have never understood the hate around Waterworld. Wish we could have had more movies in this universe. The new cameras that James Cameron has developed for Avatar that are essentially waterproof would be perfect for a sequel or remake.

at 5:58, I think some info might be wrong... Silicon Graphic ran an OS called IRIX (a unix variant) which coul not have run 3DS Max or Deluxe Paint. 3DS Max (first running on DOS pc's, simply called 3DS) ran on on x86 Windows pc's... and Deluxe Paint was native to the Commodore Amiga (though it may have been ported to Windows on the pc). Neither of those tools (I used both) were not ever used on SGI's / Irix. Great videos btw, i love this channel.

Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video! Interesting point about the Silicon Graphics's OS. I certainly have no deep knowledge of their specific workings, and I was just reporting on I had dug up from my resources. It makes me wonder if their workflow was to model the 3D assets and draw the 2D sprites on PCs, then do the final render on the beefy Silicon Graphics workstations?
@alpaykasal2902
@alpaykasal2902 11 ай бұрын
@@TheAtoll I'd guess they used the SGI to 3d model and render all assets - this looks like it was the process for backgrounds and animation cycles, which were then cut up into sprites. Donkey Kong Country famously did this - it was the 1st time the public saw high quality graphics and wondered what magic just updated their Nintendo consoles :) The 2D tech was still the same, but exporting images from software intended for hollywood production was an excellent hack. The underlying tech of consoles and home computers of th eday def could NOT have rendered these in realtime, not for many years. Here's a video showing DK Country. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4K7mHWOgNONaZI

@@TheAtollI mean this is legit how the original battlefront 3 was saved from the dustbin of history, hell the command and conqure remaster was made possible by one of the devs cleaning out his attic or garage or something and finding a drive or disk with the lost source code, hell with how dedicated people are these days give the right people enough time and they could make a remake just off of the storyboarding and input of the OG devs, hell if universal let them I'd love to see the OGs themselves remake the game with modern tech but in an intentionaly retro theme but useing the power of modern dev tools, making the most of 64bit systems, modern engines and also all the skills the devs have gained over almost 3 decades

That game was on a Quadra 700 Macintosh, it's not too hard getting those things running again. Mostly it's the PRAM battery on the motherboard that's dead, making the machine not boot. I saw a video a few days ago with a guy cleaning up and starting an old Quadra 700 in fact. There was also in development an Atari Jaguar game, but I believe it would have been a color version of the Virtual Boy game (which I own). It wouldn't have been too impressive, but I'd still like to see how it had progressed. The Jaguar was designed by people who hadn't made custom silicon before, so it was extremely quirky and there was very little in the way of development tools. I can't imagine it was too far in development, considering how many titles were announced by companies and ultimately stalled and abandoned in midstream.
@TheAtoll
@TheAtoll 11 ай бұрын
Wow, if those Quadra 700 Macintosh are easy to get going again, then maybe there is hope we will learn more about the Waterworld shooter game! Yes, I believe the Jaguar game you are referring to is the canceled Sega Saturn I spotlight at the end of this video. However, I did come across a video that captured a Jaguar demo disc which contained the same trailer video as the 3DO Buffet disc. Unfortunately that video is no longer on KZbin, but I do have it saved on my hard drive.

Actually, long time ago my wife and i with our friends combined a d&d spinoff called spell jammer and a GW warhammer fantasy spinoff tabletop strategy game that focused ship to ship battle with miniatures. It actually worked out really well. Just one suggestion if you do it, dont get involved in a blow up the deathstar campaign. Keep it small and at most atoll to atoll warfare . We considered a smoker ship like the deez a atoll and not nearly as stupid along with other things like there being small amounts of dry land, more "mutants" hi tech underwater cities etc anyway, have fun

Interesting that Waterworld was also going to be present on 32-bit platforms but they did not make it, since they had one of the settings that used the least polygons, such as the ocean. And they only limited themselves to making on rails? I remember that in Goldeneye, the Frigate stage practically recovered a stable FPS speed when you looked at the sea, and when the polygons appeared it slowed down a bit again. By the way, you made the animations to exemplify the gameplay at minutes 7:20 and 8:44, with what program? P.S: Maybe it's the background music, maybe it's the backgrounds where the water flows, but every time I watch these videos I feel sad because of the nostalgia and the longing to go back to the 90's.

When the development began in 1994 then Pickford must have seen an early Version of Wave Race 64 to be inspired of. Wave Race got released in 1996. So the time before the game still has been in development at Nintendo so if that is Pickford must have seen the Boat Version of Wave Race on Spaceworld in 1995. But that was just video material not playable at that time....
@TheAtoll
@TheAtoll 11 ай бұрын
Hmm, yes this is an excellent point. To give more context, I believe that Pickford made this comment in hindsight year's later. So I think he was saying his ideal Waterworld game would have resembled Wave Race 64, sighting it as the pinnacle of dynamic water based gaming from the mid-90s. Does that make more sense?

@archive3do769
@archive3do769 11 ай бұрын
@@TheAtoll honestly it's not that difficult of a system. It's perceived that way because no one understand it's concept. There is no requirement for a dev to use machine assembly like some other 5th gen systems. We have people regularly post 3D demos for the system, despite our dev community being miniscule in size compared to PS1, Saturn, and even Jaguar. The guy who started a port of tomb raider to the 3do a few years ago, had a fully functional unoptimized 2 level demo in 2 weeks at 10-15fps. He had never even played a 3do before that project. 3do is not as powerful as the PS1 or Saturn, but it is no slouch.
@josephmontanaro2350
@josephmontanaro2350 10 ай бұрын
@@TheAtollneed to remember this was made very early into the life of the ps1 and 3do, a good example of this is look at early Xbox 360 launch games and then compare them to things like halo reach, your limited not just by early dev tools but lack of expurence on new hardware, give people time to practice and learn on the hardware and software, get a fee updates to the dev kit and you can get situations where early launch games and end of life cycle games legit look like they were made for completely diffrent consoles, halo 1 and halo 2 is another really good example of this, another more extream case are star wars battlefront and empire at war mods now vs the base games and early mods when they first came out (granted both take advantage of the increased power of modern PCs and with empire at war petroglyph are gigachads and over a decade after release are still patching and upgrading the game)

Wait did you make these recrestions? Would you consider taking this and making a fan project remake of what the game would have been? Sounds like a really awesome side project, could even save on graphical performance and budget by makeing it an intentionally retro game graphics wise but with the QOL of modern systems and modern control options (a VR version would be absolutely awesome) Edit: i would honestly love to see a modern waterworld game, the robocop and the terminator games are amazing and id love to see devs with that much passion for the source material build a game set in the waterworld universe, i feel bethesda devs could make a pretty intresting game in the setting but my honest to god dream would be if the folks behind stalker or metro were to build one, those teams are amazing at really building a world that feels lived in and immersive and are really good at captureing the vibe of both dead cities and what its like to rough it in post/near post apocalyptic settlements built from the runes, hell if they could make underwater levels that capture that same uncanny vibe of an unnatural alteration of the familiar it would be unreal, also either an interplay style isometric rpg or a betheada first person game could work really well but they would need to lean into the campy tropes they strive on (which actualy would work ok if done properly)

My man needs to be cast as some collector of pre cataclysm history, like a mix of Abraham Washington in FO3 and the baseball guy in fallout 4, complete with the mix of actual historical facts and made up assumptions based on their interpatitions of the pre flood world (think the meme videos burialgoods makes about a civilization in like 2500 trying to make sense of our current culture without any context)

It's a bitt dissapointing that WW a very lore rich universe didn't have sequels and the lore wasn't that much expanded after the 90', but maybe it's better this way, if not maybe WW could've ended up like Avatar or the MCU

It's very much what, I will now coin, is a "time capsule franchise", as in it is a movie universe that never existed beyond its initial marketing push (besides the stunt show, which has only grown more successful).

Working on this was a low point in my career I think. Two years of development wasted on a fairly directionless project. And as the solo developer on the PS1 version I was pretty much out of my depth. The artists worked wonders with their stuff though, I wish I had more of it preserved.
@TheAtoll

Aw man, Carelton, I hope I did your story justice and gave a bit of renewed interest into the effort you put into this game. I am sure the project being directionless was not at all your fault. From everything we have seen, the game looked amazing and so much more fun to play than any of the other Waterworld games. I think I speak for all Waterworld fans when I say, "wow, a Waterworld FPS game on the PSOne, now that sounds like a good time!"

Software creations seemed like a mediocre developer but i know them because a lot of their 8bit and 16 bit games had some of the best chiptunes. because they had tim and geoff follin working there who were very good at making chiptunes. but this was going to be a more modern 32 bit game with cd audio so it wouldn't have benefitted much from their talent so i wish they made the game boy version instead . but you can really tell why these movie tie in games were so bad they really had to rush them out. and the people making the movies tried to get involved but they had no idea what they were doing because they were born before 1970 and we all know what the average boomer is like when it comes to video games. so maybe these games would have been good if they worked on them for a long time with creative freedom but then the movie would have been too old .and the guys in the movie industry viewed it the same as toys and didn't realise what happens when you rush a video game .they just thought as long as it works its fine .some movie directors did understand this like George Lucas who had his own game studio and licensed the star wars and Indiana jones ip to other devs .but made sure to give them freedom and a lot of time to polish the game so most star wars games in the 90s and 2000s were good .
@TheAtoll
@TheAtoll 11 ай бұрын
Yep! 100% agree with your argument here Belstar! Tie-in games have always been in a weird place in the gaming industry, so I guess it was inevitable that they would be come obsolete as the games matured and created it's own powerful IPs.

@@TheAtollthe way to go is to have post film games made by mega fans, look at the recent terminator and robocop games as an example then compare them to the buggy broken launch of things like cyberpunk, you give people passionate about the lore the IP and freedom to do their own thing and you get some amazing games
