This rough cut shows how even a few snips and trims can completely change a character: Removing all references to the Smoker being a pedophile was the right call, and having Helen give up on Dry Land being real would have made her more complex, and made finding Dryland all the sweeter. I think the Smokers themselves would have benefited from a few of these shots being in the film; having them show some self-preservation instead of being suicidal fanatics would have been nice, and that scene of the one Smoker coming to help the deacon after the Deez sinks was one of my favorite moments in the novelization. Also, seeing the Mariner flopping around underwater like a drunk fish is the funniest Waterworld-related thing I've ever seen.

For the record, the extended shots of the atoll siege really add to the scale, and convey the legit terror of what a raid would be like for real. That many hyper aggressive men showing up on scrappy boats with all kinds of technology - very frightening if you're already in a precarious way of life.

I love this film still pushes the Jet Ski vs WaveRunner fad of the early 90s. The Jet Ski (standing) became popular in the late 1980s. Baywatch helped emphasize the Jet Ski’s extreme/gangster attitude. WaveRunners (sitting) were seen as an old person transport. Jet Ski was XTREME. The Jet Ski fad died hard by the mid 1990s. PlayStation and N64 tried to bring the fad back with Jet Moto and WaveRace64. Jet Ski never made a comeback. But I love how WaterWorld’s represented the Jet Ski as more aggressive than the WaveRunner. WaveRunners had the bulky riders with guns, Jet Skis had the acrobatic riders that sparked fear in their victims.

I always suspected the shot for Point 12 at 7:34 was longer, as the abrupt cut to the Enforcer yelling out "Look!" felt out-of-place, as regards the flow of the editing communicating who he might have been talking to. Not that editing can’t patch up cuts like that with the right sound effects and music, but that one didn't quite. I'm guessing some studio heads (or Costner?) didn't much like the "Crabs of Hell" colloquialism for this floating culture. Number 18 (9:12): For ages I always thought he did jump ship, not only because "duh, other smokers will pick him up in a sec", but it did look like he was turning around and about to jump, so much so I falsely remembered seeing him doing so. Glad to see that was the intended case! Not surprised to see a few more moments of the more depraved aspects of man re: the drifter and the Deacon. We already know from the slave colony subplot getting trimmed from the book to the extended cut to being nearly invisible in the Final Cut that most such aspects were weeded out during production and editing. Number 46 (23:09): Think we all presumed this even before the novel confirmed this, given the public cuts just make it seem like he found a stray jet-ski by chance. I'm surprised it didn't also have the part of him murdering Jack Black's pilot character from the novel, though that was possibly cut before this assembly or not filmed at all. In any case, Deacon yelling out "Pilot!" as he approaches the skyboat remaining in the film leaves a minor inconsistency error (plus, if the pilot was just waiting in the plane, why couldn't he have snuck up on the Mariner as he was talking to the Deacon/preparing to drop the flare?). Otherwise, most cuts were wise, and a few were curios that better explain a small moment or characterisation but I can understand why they hit the cutting room floor for pacing and runtime reasons and not having "too much" world building for that casual summer movie audience. Though some of those curios would have been better choices to splice back in for the TV cut that eventually became the Ulysses cut than a lot of the needling padding it did get. Thanks for the interesting insight! Thought the channel had been running out of content to mine for videos with the lower rate lately, so glad to see this as its first entry for 2024.
@TheAtoll7 ай бұрын
Wow! I never picked up on the "Pilot!" line from the Deacon! I had to go back and rewatch the scene, and you're absolutely correct, it's in audio mix! I am almost positive that a scene of the Deacon murdering Jack Black's character was probably shot, but it was not in this rough cut because this cut was only composed of photography in Hawaii, everything shot in California is missing. Great comment here! Thanks for sharing your insight.

I think the movie costed 175 millions total (not counting inflation), the most expensive film at the time. But as the host mentionned, this was made out scans of the real negatives, so it's not stuff they shot just for the rought cut. It's just that whatever they used to digitize the negatives for the rought cut was not great, hence the terrible image quality. Probably costed nothign if Universal already had the machines.

The ones I'm referring to were played by Sab Shimono (from *"TMNT III"),* Leonardo Cimino (from *"DUNE 1984"),* and the female Elder who tries to offer a young girl to The Mariner - before they discover he's a "Mutation" - and later in the Extended Cut seconds the vote on getting rid of both The Mariner and Enola. Was it possible that they all got killed by the Smokers as they push through the enormous gaping hole, caused by the Smoker's Kamakazi Boat?

@CartoonKarma7 ай бұрын
@@TheAtoll Given the TV Cut added back in most of the 40-odd minutes to have almost 3 hours of footage as a TV event, and the Ulysses cut is just it with the for-PG censored moments restored, I've always though an ideal version of the film would be partway between the Theatrical and Ulysses cut. Taking the most crucial scenes from the latter - the atoll meeting, the extended aftermath of the atoll battle of the Smokers' counting their spoils and the Deacon's evolution speech, the Mariner splitting from the new Atoll and heading back alone to realise the connection on the Nat Geo magazines (a crucial character arc moment, him giving up and moving on briefly rather compromised), the Ulysses and Mt. Everest bits at the end - plus some other small additional moments and shots that are quite useful. But not retain much of the fluffy padding that harms the film more than helps it. Plus the rearranging that, among other things, spoils the Deez reveal that you noted in a prior video. And also cut some unnecessary shots and moments still in the theatrical cut (they removed all the slave colony mentions and closeups, but kept Helen lowering the magnifying glass to the slave below, then silently gasping? Uh, bit clumsy). I've thus always thought there is a platonic Best Cut of the film possible that would likely only be slightly longer than the Theatrical (still under 2.5 hours) and flow even better. Maybe something for a fan editor someday.

Seeing The Mariner swimming in the rought cut, I *Really* get the feeling they were going for a dolphin-like style to show his amphibian nature. Unfortunately, human body don't have the same grace when moving under water.😅 As for stuff like Helen and the Drifter's "half-hour" and the Bishops's p*do undertones in the earlier stages of productions, it's actually NOT that surprinsing to me? Swabuckling films often have quite morbid moments that come out of nowhere to keep the movie serious despite all the heroic actions. "Flesh and Blood" had some very explicit sex and gore, the 90's "Zorro" film was explicit in the torture slaves received, human sacrifices to be stopped galore in movies without explicit blood, etc. I must also mentions Indiana Jones seduced Marion (his future wife after some on-and-off drama) when she was a teenager and he was in his twenties. (hinted in the first film, confirmed in side material)...😬 It took the 1990s for books/movies to stop having characters just casually show interest in underage girls and it being treated as a minor details, hence why I think the "Waterworld" film ended up dropping the plot point entirely; it was in a middle of a cultural shift.

5:47 I think he says "Cuanto tiempo vive aqui? No habla poliglota?". This means something like "How long have you been living here? You don't speak Polyglot?", but spoken like an Irish talking in bad Spanish. Maybe it's "cuanto tiempo viene aqui?", meaning "How long have you been coming here?". In both cases a more correct way would be "Hace cuanto vives/vienes aqui"; the time is implicit.

One of my main motivations to become mega rich is to pump life into the water world franchise !!! C’mon netfix, hbo, Amazon !!!! U guys pump hundreds of millions into complete garbage when a franchise like water world would have a huge built in Fanbase along with already interesting lore so the potential is ridiculous from the get go. Netflix & universal already work together so why not ?!?
@TheAtoll6 ай бұрын
Yeah, it's a shame. And i think Netflix is starting to cut back on a lot of those franchise reboot projects, so it seems even more unlikely now.

Well, yeah, in hindsight, that may have been an exaggeration when I was writing the script for this one. I think I actually meant to go back and change that, but forgot. It happens, these videos are long and somewhat complicated to create and I have made mistakes before. Perhaps I will do a corrections video at some point!
