I just got one of these and it now has an on/off switch where the power plugs in. Also, instead of having to use the Allen wrench to adjust the laser, wing nuts are used to tighten and loosen the laser head.

Your video is Great and very informative, im new to all this but learning as fast as I can. I used to build boats in Lake Havasu AZ. for about 15 years but now on disability with all this knowledge with wood resin and gelcoat I figured lets put a Laser in the mix! To be honest I was asked if it was possible to engrave something into stone for my Father in Law who was buried in a family cemetery just inside of the Arizona New Mexico boarder. My second choice was a powder coated panel over steel but I couldnt do any kind of shading, just black and white and I think I could do better than that. Id love our feedback and thank you again

It's not strong enough to actually engrave the metals. With the painted aluminum card I showed, the laser is selectively removing the paint to create the image. On the stainless steel, it's annealing the metal to change its color to create the image. Thanks for the comment and for watching.

Hi Dave, I'm thinking about getting this machine. I want to do some smaller projects on it like dog tags and was wondering how easy it was to make sure everything is lined up and perfectly centered.
@Neo7CNC
@Neo7CNC 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! One thing that I do for small parts is to make an outline job that I run before the final piece. I'll have a backer or waste board fastened down and also make sure the machine can't move. You run the outline job fist to outline the target area, then place the real target piece, set focus and then run the real parts. Hope this helps!

Hi Dave Loved your video on this product and was looking for a cutter to create windows for my bespoke Lighthouse models. Questions: 1. Can this laser cutter/engraver do a mixture of cut-out and engraving depth? For example, I want to make a four-pane window, and on the outside of the panes, I have a rabbit recess. Is this possible? 2. Can google Sketchup be used for the design software?
@Neo7CNC
@Neo7CNC 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words. 1. Are you wanting to engrave/cut acrylic for the windows? If so, I believe it should be able to etch the pane outline but I'm not sure about the rabbit. It might put too much heat into the material. Also the color (or lack of color) of the acrylic will add complexity. I can cut dark acrylic but lighter, transparent colors act differently to the laser. The small detail and rabbit you're looking for may play better with a small CNC machine. 2. I'm not a Sketchup user but if it can export any of these file types (NC, BMP, JPG, PNG, DXF) it should work.

Hey Dave thanks for the video. I am a woodworker and also do graphic design. I use Adobe Illustrator and I’m interested in trying to use laser cutter/engraver to come up with different items. I could something like this being a great addition to a woodshop to do different things with. Is there a steep learning curve to learn how to use something like this? I have never used one. Is the software to run the machine difficult to use? Final question, could I export something from Adobe Illustrator and use laser engraver to cut/engrave it in wood/metal, plastic etc? Thank you for taking the time to answer my question and your video

Dear David, thank you very much for your video. It was very helpfull! I completed set up just in 15 min. I would like to ask, did you ever try engraving on granite with this specific model and, if so, what are settings you recommend. I was trying to engrave on granite with settings of stainless steel, and I was surprised, that laser is understaning b/w colors versa. So you have to invert image before engraving. Have you tried?

Hi, Everything I've done to this point has been by experimenting and finding what works for the specific material I'm trying. Some engraver manufacturers offer recommendations. I've included the speed, laser power and number of passes for all my tests in recent videos. You could also start with my settings
@Powerstrokemods
@Powerstrokemods 2 жыл бұрын
Since this machine took so many passes to complete some simple tasks, and did a sub-par job on etching the stainless, can a more powerful laser be retrofitted to it, or maybe it can be tweaked to perform better? Maybe a 10 watt laser would do better.
@Neo7CNC
@Neo7CNC 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ken. These machines aren't powerful enough to actually etch the stainless. They really only cause a color change by annealing the metal. You can't tell any difference when you feel a marked or unmarked section of the material. A fiber type laser is much better suited for actual material removal in many metals. Thanks for your comments and questions.

I've only tested the Atomstack so I can't speak to the others. I will tell you that this type of desktop laser will not truly engrave metal. Is an air assist the same as the exhaust?
@Neo7CNC
@Neo7CNC 7 ай бұрын
It is not. Tha air assist is blowing air from around the nozzle. This helps minimize over burn and also helps the laser cut better by pushing the smoke out of the way of the beam. Thanks for your question.

Where did you get the spacer card?
@Neo7CNC
@Neo7CNC 7 ай бұрын
It came with the laser. Thankfully they are included with most lasers that focus this way.

You can swap out those screws with a couple of thumb screws. About $1 at any hardware store.

10:10 The two things you said you'd like to see improved, a power switch and easier laser positioning, have both been addressed with the M40 model.

Are you using air assist? You’ll cut far quicker/thicker with direct air assist and your engraving will be better - just curious as I didn’t see one on assembly?

Why dont you have a front hinged acrylic door on the enclosure.
@Neo7CNC
@Neo7CNC 2 жыл бұрын
Mainly to allow air in the front so the exhaust pulls better.

Any videos on stainless steel? Have you tried it with metal?
@Neo7CNC
@Neo7CNC 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Russell. I've tried stainless with two different LED based desktop lasers now and the result were the same. These types of machines can only anneal the stainless (put heat into it) which causes a color change. I did a deep dive on the subject in a video several weeks back and also touch on it in my latest video that came out today. Check those out and see if it helps. Thanks for the question.

LaserGRBL (free) and Lightburn ($40usd) are both fairly intuitive. For just engraving basic pictures LaserGRBL was fine. If you want to create custom engravings on the fly then I'd use Lightburn. I used Lightburn to do actual cuts as well.

I have a a5 pro as shown. For some reason lightburn is not wanting to read the parameters of the machine and the communication from the program to the laser doesn't line up. (Top left positioning will burn in the middle of the laser frame). Any tips?

I did the exact same thing u did same setting same machine same software same material.. and yet it took me 30 passes and it didn't even cut through. Eventually I decided to use 600 mm/min and it did eventually cut through but wow... took forever. Could u make a video of the process u took to get there? I'm using lightburn and 3 mm plywood.

Because of your question and a few others, I think I'll do an additional video on the laser showing my process. Stay tuned and thanks for the inspiration.

Try to use a vector file or .svg. That reduces the times three folds. I'm still a newbie but thats one thing I found out when I was doing my experiments. I used a text file from photoshop as a standard image and saved another file as an svg from photoshop. The same text had different times. SVG definitely cut faster than the raster file. Hope this helps.
