The Battle of Münchengrätz was a pivotal engagement during the Austro-Prussian War. After suffering defeats at Hühnerwasser and Podol, the Austrian Iser Army, led by Clam-Gallas and Prince Albert of Saxony, decided to abandon their exposed position near Münchengrätz. As the Prussian Elbe Army and 1st Army closed in on them from the west and north, the Austrians and Saxons made strategic maneuvers to escape the encirclement. Three Austrian brigades under Count Leiningen held off the Prussian pursuit, while other forces split into different directions. However, the Prussians initiated a successful attack, driving the Austrians and their allies out of their Iser line.

Quick pronunciation guide for german umlauts... it's not perfect, but it gets much closer than what you're trying now... Ä = the a sound in to grab, ware or dare Ö = the o sound in worst Ü = the u in murder, further or burn so Münchengrät is "mu(rder)n-chan-gra(b)-ts"

Since you are covering many less explored battles of the war, I hope You will cover battle of Custoza (1866) from the Italian theather in this series. I'm a Pole and this battle was well known in Lesser Poland back in the day, since there was a crazy cavalry charge of uhlans (13th regiment) from Galicia under Rodakowski that broke the Italian army. The regiment became really popular in Austria. It is less well known nowadays in Poland compered to charges from Somosierra or Rokitna.

@Ugly_German_Truths

@@CKyIe the broader category title "wars of german unification" definitely implies the Francoprussian war will HAVE to follow... (Although i still prefer "Deutsch französischer Krieg" as Germany started it and more than just prussians fought. Especially the USA seem to believe that from here to the second world war all germans ARE prussians which is far from the truth, even though the punitative peace in 1866 increased their territory and population share by quite a lot.

I know Clam-Gallas was an inept general but he was right to be mad when ordered to remain in position against a numerically superior opponent whose forces were of better quality than his own. The Austrian's problem was their multi ethnic army. Although Archduke Charles had a similar army to command against Napoleon in the 1809 campaign and briefly made it work, in 1866 it was very different. If you go to war with another nation, be sure to do so with troops of your own ethnicity who are willing to fight for you and conscripts forced into the ranks from other nationalities who don't give a darn or want to support you at all.

The problem even got worse in WW1, where non-Austrian and non-Hungarian troops fought against the same people, who were just part of enemy nations. Austria had this problem since 1700 and Germanization was simply too ineffective. However, Austria's multiethnic troops actually performed well if fighting for a GOOD reason. In the Austrian War of Succession multiple countries wanted to partition Austria, but many Hungarians and Croats fought the invaders back. In the Seven Years' War Austria tried to halt Prussian expansionism as good as possible. In the Napoleonic Wars Austria and its allies tried to liberate Europe from Napoleonic rule. In the battle of Lissa Croat sailors fought back the Italian invaders who wanted to capture Dalmatia, where many Croats lived. But then you get wars like the Austro-Prussian War (a simply GERMAN Unification War) and WW1, where the only goal was to punish Serbia without expecting that the war would last for years, which made independence movements only stronger (although nationalism already became a problem in 1848). Also, another problem for Austria was geography. Austria was in the middle of Europe surrounded by enemies. It wasn't an island like Britain (where you only needed a navy to defend yourself) or a huge country like Russia, whose army could retreat thousands of miles.
