The Autozam AZ-1 | The Best of the Japanese K-Car Holy Trinity

So today on the show we took a quick trip over to Japan! Just kidding, I wish... We did, however, drive this stunning little Autozam AZ-1 on a tiny mountain road, being sure not to take ourselves too serious because this car is one of the most hilarious cars we've ever had on the show. With a 657cc turbocharged 3-cylinder engine mounted in the middle of the chassis, it allows the AZ-1 to have an exotic look, while still contained in a package, smaller than your carry-on luggage.

This car deserves a 2nd generation: with its small engine, it fully embraces the downsizing philosophy. In Italy, many sportscars are out of reach for many people because of taxes on high-power cars or because of their bad fuel economy (gas in Italy is very expensive). This small, fancy, mid-engined RWD car could say that even three-cylinder turbo engines can be fun if fitted in the right car.

0 to 60 mph about 10.5 seconds, the size of an Austin Mini, the deeper exhaust note from the exhaust sounds good, complicated long turbo plumbing - shift the cooler to the rear and shorten it to reduce lag, wind up the boost as it's quite low, fun. Including the S/Cara there's less than 5000 total made.

iDrive4fun93 - it's got a Suzuki motor right now. People put Hyabusa engines in the Cappuccino sometimes, which is the same engine as the AZ1 has, but FR layout instead of MR. So I'm not sure if there is a FWD style transmission that would mate to a bike engine and fit in here. Maybe find a good compact FWD engine for a swap.

I haven't tried the AZ-1, but considering it's the same engine, the Cappuccino has better finish and comfort, and is most likely more agile. So no, the AZ-1 is not the best, but still comes before the beaten lawn mower.
