I backed it at the highest tier and I love it, a few nitpicks of course. The earth kingdom on the map is vibrant yellow, where as in the show it's more of a yellowish tan. The Pai Sho tile isn't colored right. (Apparently viacom had some issue with them using the real lotus tile, maybe the plan to release a pai sho game or something), Minor damage the the books, nothing like yours just a bend on one of the corners. The deluxe leather bag is a bit bland just all blue and silver less interesting then the lower tier cloth bag. But the dice are super nice both the plastic and the higher tier obsidian ones, The books are beautiful with a lot of information, and as someone who is a super fan I can say that yes most is very accurate to the source material. They fill in some areas like proper names to cities or details about avatars we only had vague ideas about like Roku. Playing the game the combat is very clunky at first but once you know how to play it, it smooths out very easily and is simple enough that you aren't spending tons of time thinking about what to do and more focus on making the fight exciting and creative.

Despite the damaged goods and some disappointing bending applications, all in all - its a good game. And at least they didn't use 5E!

Mine arrived damaged also. Its unreal that they throw that stuff in a box with NO PACKING MATERIALS. Its even worse because the stuff is pretty awesome.

bending is extremely disappointing in this game, as is the general philosophy around combat. The rest is great, though

@@TheRPGBlender: For someone new to PbtA, I think it would be interesting for you to see how closely knit Moves and narrative is in that game. I think having the techniques (as described by you; I have not read “Avatar” yet) is deceptively like a more traditional game.

Oof, sorry to hear you were burning out! Yeah, take it easy, best to produce less stuff but to enjoy doing it than try doing too much and crash...

Definitely. Was hard losing my gear, but it was a mixed blessing as it forced me to take a step back, take a break, and evaluate how I'll be doing things moving forward

I liked your review a lot, just a note, the wan shi tong´s adventure guide includes another 49 techniques at the very end of the book. Two general techniques for everyone, 7 for firebending and 8 for all the other disciplines

True! Definitely worth noting, I was just keeping it to the core (for now)

I was looking at this Kickstarter a while back. I love narrative focused RPGs and Avatar the Last Airbender. So I think this game is definitely for me but it sucks there isn't much crunch. Overall I am definitely gonna give this game a look.

If you like narrative games and Avatar, you will almost certainly get *some* use out of it - worth the look!

Yea I agree I do wish there was a bit more crunch, but like all TTRPGs you can always add in more things as you and your group like. I have ran and played a few one shots and am trying to get a short campaign going at the moment and overall I like the system. The lack of mechanics means it encourages more creativity with bending and flavor and its really lends itself to making you feel like you are playing out a episode of the show. The mechanics that encourage roleplaying really feel great when they come together with characters that make sense. Plus a lot of the playbook moves are super fun to pull off or mess around with.

Glad to hear you reached out for support on the damaged product. I've been seeing that they're aware of poor packaging by the supplier/shipper in recent email updates, so hopefully this is resolved well. On a gameplay note, I have a 7 year old and we've been playing No Thank You, Evil!, which you may or may not be familiar with, as a starting tabletop RPG and it's similarly narrative driven and with notably simpler mechanics based on the Cypher System. For narrative, imagination with my kid, and the overall approach of translating the vibe of the show into a game, I'm hopeful.

Hopefully I'll hear from them soon! And No Thank You Evil! is definitely a great place to start. I'm a big fan of the Cypher System, so once my kids are older I'll definitely be picking it up for them

@@TheRPGBlender Just opened my package and the book corners were pretty banged up, so seeing about the replacement process too. I'm just glad they're aware, so knock on wood. Pretty happy about the material and print quality, though, and that the secondary items don't feel too cheap or like bad freebies.

I was excited for this game, but the way the book explains the rules kind of made it hard for my nuerodivergent brain to understand. Thanks for explaining it in a crunchy way so that I can enjoy this game!
@TheRPGBlender
@TheRPGBlender Жыл бұрын
Totally agree! There is a lot of messy language cluttering up the actual crunchy bits. An unfortunate trend with most narrative focused games. I hope what I explained helps - there is definitely more to the game than I covered here, so maybe I'll add it to my "tutorial" list.

The rules are badly explained and badly designed in some corners (specially around combat and bending). They are fun when you get to understand them and get used to doing GM moves all day, though.
