So, let me just get this straight. A gentleman spy action adventure with Ralph Fiennes as the hero, Uma Therman as the female lead, Jim Broadbent as the senior spy, Sean freaking Connery as the villain, and THIS is what you came up with?!

A few years ago, an obscure studio had Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and a $200 million production budget to work with. They came up with "The Force Awakens" which included one non-speaking scene with Hamill and gave most of the screen time to a group of unknown actors.

What was the show like? I've not heard of it before. I know that James Bond parodies were something of a fad back then (Austin Powers is probably the most well-known of the bunch, yet even f*cking Mr Bean jumped on the bandwagon toward the end), but from the looks of it this film was really scraping the bottom of the barrel.
@NotInTheBox
@NotInTheBox 6 жыл бұрын
ztslovebird funnily enough, The Avengers was a thing before James Bond, and a few of Steeds assistants from the show went on to star in the Bond films. The Avengers is classed as spy-fi, not a serious thriller spy show. It even gets to the point where it becomes self referential, with the actors making up their own witty jokes. This movie is an awful representation of a great show devised by a great man, Sydney Newman, who of course created the hit show “Doctor Who”.

Comparing both Avengers movies: This movie: -Has boring dialogue -Has teddy bears beating people up -The only good thing in this movie is Sean Connery(not saying much). -Weather machine. The good one: - Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Samuel L. Jackson, etc. - awesome action scenes - a serious death scene that makes you feel bad. - Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye vs. Loki. - a series of movies since 2008, and continues through 2016. .....You can see the clear winner.

The original series, with Macnee and Ian Hendry, WAS actually about avenging! The series took a surreal turn with Diana Rigg because she had bewbs and leather and color was new to television (before the show went to complete crap with Linda Thorson), and the Swing culture, and and the movie had nostalgia, and surrealism, and..and... and... I got nothin'. I grew up watching the show, and this movie quite disappointed me.

That movie wasn't good, though. Besides being unfaithful to the source material, it was a poorly paced and plot-hole-riddled film in its own right. It's very unreasonable to expect a positive review. I mean, it's not among the worst of the worst that the Critic and his ilk have reviewed, but it's still a real stinker.

Alex Forth the reason it works in Kingsmen is the same reason it worked in the original show. The situations are so bat shit over the top it’s obviously not meant to be taken seriously. The original show was a comedy after all. With the movie they try and play everything straight.

Both take spy cliches to their most absurd in an attempt to comedically deconstruct the genre. However, The Avengers (1998) is a very broad spoof that just does the above and says it's "ironic" while Kingsmen takes a precise scalpel to the tropes and subverts each and every one of them e.g the villain has dinner with the hero but instead of serving something gross meant to intimidate him, he serves him McDonald's.

Yes in the tv show, all that pointless banter has lots of sexual innuendo and some genuine attraction between the two protagonists. This movie has none of that. Nice how they remake stuff and totally not understand the source material. Like the remake of Total Recall doesn't have any of that "Is it real or is it a dream" from the original, a debate, which is STILL raging on internet forums today (where as everyone has already forgotten the remake).

Executive Meddling: According to Peter Bart's book Gross, Warner Bros. green-lit the film based on the strength of the cast and Jeremiah Chechik's work on Diabolique and were horrified by the final cut, being unsure of its appeal. The first screening took place in front of a "largely Spanish-speaking, working class" audience in Phoenix, Arizona, who hated the movie. The second took place in San Diego and didn't go any better. The studio wanted to reduce the running time and re-market it as a traditional action film (which it wasn't). Chechik was forced to re-edit the movie and remove some of his favourite scenes. The film's running time was cut from 115 minutes to 89, resulting in a incoherent mess laden with logistical and continuity errors. Michael Kamen was forced to re-work parts of his score, which caused him to cancel a number of concerts at Carnegie Hall and arrange additional recording sessions. After working on the film for eight and half months, Kamen quit the film to work on Lethal Weapon 4 and took his score with him. He told Soundtrack magazine that working on the film was "like aiming at a moving target".

I actually think the old woman is funny. 1) The contrast of a polite request followed by loud gunfire. 2) The visual of an elderly person using a tommy gun is *most unorthodox*. 3) The expectation/hope that her shtick will be different, only to find it's not. Much like in your Why Do We Love Stupid? video, the humour is derived from our own suffering.
@ecgameplayer

It would be funny but after seeing the polite shtick 10 times all of them failing miserably either being unfunny or annoying after the fifth time really puts a damper on later scenes.
