What was the show like? I've not heard of it before. I know that James Bond parodies were something of a fad back then (Austin Powers is probably the most well-known of the bunch, yet even f*cking Mr Bean jumped on the bandwagon toward the end), but from the looks of it this film was really scraping the bottom of the barrel.
@NotInTheBox6 жыл бұрын
ztslovebird funnily enough, The Avengers was a thing before James Bond, and a few of Steeds assistants from the show went on to star in the Bond films. The Avengers is classed as spy-fi, not a serious thriller spy show. It even gets to the point where it becomes self referential, with the actors making up their own witty jokes. This movie is an awful representation of a great show devised by a great man, Sydney Newman, who of course created the hit show “Doctor Who”.

The good one: - Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Samuel L. Jackson, etc. - awesome action scenes - a serious death scene that makes you feel bad. - Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye vs. Loki. - a series of movies since 2008, and continues through 2016. .....You can see the clear winner.

Both take spy cliches to their most absurd in an attempt to comedically deconstruct the genre. However, The Avengers (1998) is a very broad spoof that just does the above and says it's "ironic" while Kingsmen takes a precise scalpel to the tropes and subverts each and every one of them e.g the villain has dinner with the hero but instead of serving something gross meant to intimidate him, he serves him McDonald's.

And years later, Ralph Fiennes becomes M in the James Bond movies. It's funny how a satire spy movie actor becomes the boss of a serious spy action film series.

Yes in the tv show, all that pointless banter has lots of sexual innuendo and some genuine attraction between the two protagonists. This movie has none of that. Nice how they remake stuff and totally not understand the source material. Like the remake of Total Recall doesn't have any of that "Is it real or is it a dream" from the original, a debate, which is STILL raging on internet forums today (where as everyone has already forgotten the remake).

As soon as I heard who had been cast as the leads in this movie, I knew that it would be a disaster. Has Ralph Fiennes ever managed to be charming in any movie role ever?

Executive Meddling: According to Peter Bart's book Gross, Warner Bros. green-lit the film based on the strength of the cast and Jeremiah Chechik's work on Diabolique and were horrified by the final cut, being unsure of its appeal. The first screening took place in front of a "largely Spanish-speaking, working class" audience in Phoenix, Arizona, who hated the movie. The second took place in San Diego and didn't go any better. The studio wanted to reduce the running time and re-market it as a traditional action film (which it wasn't). Chechik was forced to re-edit the movie and remove some of his favourite scenes. The film's running time was cut from 115 minutes to 89, resulting in a incoherent mess laden with logistical and continuity errors. Michael Kamen was forced to re-work parts of his score, which caused him to cancel a number of concerts at Carnegie Hall and arrange additional recording sessions. After working on the film for eight and half months, Kamen quit the film to work on Lethal Weapon 4 and took his score with him. He told Soundtrack magazine that working on the film was "like aiming at a moving target".

I remembered watching part of this movie at a drive-in theatre when it first came out. The only thing I could recall was the teddy bear scene then falling asleep since it was very boring up to that point. By the time I woke up, the movie was over and I was left wondering if anything that was truly exciting had happened. That and RIP Sean Connery.

I actually think the old woman is funny. 1) The contrast of a polite request followed by loud gunfire. 2) The visual of an elderly person using a tommy gun is *most unorthodox*. 3) The expectation/hope that her shtick will be different, only to find it's not. Much like in your Why Do We Love Stupid? video, the humour is derived from our own suffering.
@ecgameplayer4 жыл бұрын
It would be funny but after seeing the polite shtick 10 times all of them failing miserably either being unfunny or annoying after the fifth time really puts a damper on later scenes.
