I _love_ the NBC Live version 🥰 for all those reasons. I also love how in the NBC production Dorothy was more of a spunky, determined, resourceful yet kind-hearted girl, she wasn't crying and whining the whole time like Ross' Dorothy and it gave Stephanie Mills (the og Dorothy in _The Wiz_ on Broadway) her long overdue film performance in _The Wiz_ (albeit as Aunt Em). On that note, the main reason I hate this version is because of Diana Ross, not just because of her performance, but _how_ she got the part. The role of Dorothy actually was going to go to Stephanie Mills, but Diana Ross and asked Barry Gordy to cast her but Gordy declined saying she was too old for the part, as a result Ross made a deal with Universal Studios to be in it. So Ross basically acted like those whiny, entitled theater kids who can't handle not being in the spotlight and stole the part right under Stephanie Mills' nose.

The direction and casting of The Wiz led to a lot of the changes that made the film such a drastic departure from the musical; the producers had Stephanie Mills in mind to play Dorothy but were ultimately convinced to cast Diana Ross who fought to get the part, which prompted director John Badham to quit out of dissatisfaction, and so Sidney Lumet stepped in to fill the chair. Rounding out the production was Joel Schumacher, and to accommodate Diana Ross' age rewrote the script to focus on a much older Dorothy living in New York City instead of Kansas. Lumet's inexperience with musicals, combined with these casting and script decisions led to a lot of internal skepticism of the project that was ultimately vindicated when the film failed at the box office.

That sometimes happens. Like the suggestion by the other commenter, reading the script is best because it allows you to use your own imagination rather than go by preexisting imagery, when reading the text. An important skill to develop as an actor. Furthermore, it allows you to get the main idea and concept at the source(the heart and spine of the work) which will assist you as it helps you navigate the rest of the production.

It's all the black people at the time was used to and could relate too. It did not look strange to us as kids Because the landscape was a bit more relatable than a farm setting. So they knew wat they were doing . This film was for the people of the time so that's why it's very dated but still a time capsule of a gem 💎

What scares me is that Michael kept trying to resurrect parts of this movie in his later short films: Bad, Captain EO, Moonwalker, sewer exits in both Thriller and Beat It, the hecklers in The Way You Make Me Feel. He couldn't escape this film because he had an affair with Diana Ross during its filming and he never got over her.

2 things: 1. OH MY GOD YOU GUYS HAVE OPENED MY EYES. Diana Ross is the WORST Dorothy that has ever existed. And the fact that she essentially had to bribe her way into the role says a lot. Cause she asked Berry Gordy for the role and he said no because she was too old, which yes she absolutely was, she was 33 at the time. And she went around him and basically had to make a deal between Berry and Rob Cohen that he would produce the movie if Diana got to be Dorothy. I admire her determination but if I had to make a deal to get a role that would not make me feel good. Her voice isn't even that good at least in this movie. The only song in this movie where Diana really gets to shine is "Home" and even that is mediocre. I can sing that song way better than she did and my voice isn't even that powerful. 2. I've had nightmares from that horrible subway scene. That scene just feels like a mushroom trip. I'm an adult and that scene still creeps me out like nobody's business.
