35:48 - He's somewhat of a mindless beast. But Hulk is able to distinguish between friend and foe despite that. He attacked the Avengers because the scepter messed with his head, as well as the rest of the Avengers and Fury, which clouded his mind, and at that point Hulk, like Banner didn't really trust some of the members as he didn't really know them.

Banner learned to "control" Hulk at the very end of Incredible Hulk. The reason he was going crazy at the ship fighting Thor and Black Widow was because the transformation was triggered by the explosions, as a trauma response. It wasn't a consensual transformation by neither of them.

Good reaction! This movie combines elements of the OG comics & the Ultimates comics continuity to make a good movie that started the cinematic universe era where different companies tried to do what Marvel did by bringing franchises together or do spin offs. Loki being the villain that brought the Avengers together was what happen in the comics. The founding members are different here although. In the original story, it was Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, & two other heroes you haven’t been introduce to yet that became the team. Captain America didn’t join until issue 4. It was worth bringing it up because Black Widow & Hawkeye (Clint) were basically taking those two heroes spots as founding members in the films. The reason Hulk was aggressive earlier in the movie was implied that Loki’s scepter influenced his actions to attack everyone which was what Loki wanted to escape. Hulk never hurts anyone who is innocent or not try to harm him or Banner since they share the same body. If you want to know more about The Avengers, the animated series: Avengers Earth’s Mightiest Heroes (2010-2013) is a amazing adaptation of the team and follow more closely to the source material.

A bit of background on Hulk: Banner was abused by his father as a child. When he got zapped by Gamma radiation, it created a sort of split personality. Other people have gotten hit with Gamma radiation, and it just intensifies their personalities (in most cases). But because Banner has so much rage inside him, this is how he is able to finally release it. He's spent his entire life trying to gain control. We saw him doing a bit of it with his meditation and the final scene at the end of the Incredible Hulk movie. In the comics, he's gone back and forth from having control to losing it. And typically he'll lose control by someone manipulating his mind.... kinda like how Loki was with the scepter.

The Hulk going off on people had always been because he was being chased or attacked, so the transformation was effectively an excessive fight or flight response. Banner remains somewhat in control of the Hulk and triggers the transformation when needed. But when it’s an involuntary triggering, you get full-on Hulk that can, maybe even will, kill people.

I remember when this movie was coming out, I kept saying it would NEVER work. I thought it would be focused on one hero (like Cap or Iron Man), and the other characters would be completely sidelined. I am so impressed how everyone seem to have their moment to shine, and this is absolutely one of my favorite movies. It's so beautifully written and directed, with scenes like the 'hero shot' in NY, and another shot where the camera followed the action through each of the heroes fighting without any edits. But one of my favorite scenes was with Black Widow and Banner where she confronts him to join. The subtext on this scene, and tension, with the performances from each is just brilliant.

Avengers is a very good movie. I thought Marvel films would fail with the previous film, Captain America: First Avenger. After all for a lot of earlier Superhero films the SFX were not up to realistically depicting powers, time and the march of technology changed that. For Cap to work tho you have to believe Steve Rogers, skinny Steve, is possible...I didn't think they could do it...but when the Second Trailer for Cap Amer First Avenger hit I started to have hope. Captain America: Winter Soldier is my personal fave Marvel Film...but this one was in contention.

*The Avengers Origin:* The Avengers first appeared in The Avengers #1 (1963), in a storyline where they came together to stop Loki, who had tricked the Hulk into destroying a New York City bridge. The heroes united to thwart Loki, leading to the formation of the team. The original comic lineup consisted of Ant-Man, Wasp, Thor, Iron Man, and Hulk, who joined forces after discovering Loki’s deception. Captain America would later join in Avengers #4 (1964), when the team found him frozen in ice. All of these characters were pre-existing in the Marvel Universe, brought together to form a team that would hopefully boost their popularity. The Avengers operated out of Avengers Mansion, which was introduced in The Avengers #2 (1963) and was formerly owned by Tony Stark’s family. Stark Tower, also called Avengers Tower, wasn’t introduced until The New Avengers #3 (2005). This tower became iconic following its depiction in The Avengers (2012) but for decades Avengers Mansion was the home of The Avengers, Unfortunately Avengers Mansion has yet to appear in the MCU. Originally, Ant-Man and Wasp were intended to appear in the MCU’s The Avengers (2012), but they were cut from the script due to the large number of characters. The screenwriters also decided to hold off on Ant-Man’s appearance until after his solo movie was released. As a result, Hawkeye and Black Widow were featured as key members of the team rather than just supporting characters. In the comics, both characters did become Avengers, but in 1964, they were initially introduced as villains working as double agents on opposing sides. *The Ultimates Origins:* In 2000, Marvel launched its Ultimate imprint, a new universe that re-imagined and updated its characters for the 21st century highlighting a more grounded superhero universe. The Ultimates, this universe’s version of The Avengers, first appeared in The Ultimates #1 (2002) using the same line-up of characters from the Mainline comics. The team was sanctioned by the President of the United States and operated as an elite government force under S.H.I.E.L.D., with Nick Fury as their leader. This version of the team was edgier and more mature, which garnered mixed reactions from readers at the time. It was also more connected to the government than the more independent mainline Avengers. The Ultimates first came together to battle an enraged Hulk in New York City, followed by an invasion by the Chitauri, which served as inspiration for the plot of The Avengers (2012). Although the Ultimate Universe was intriguing, it eventually fell apart due to controversial creative decisions and the negative reception of certain character depictions. However, Ultimate Spider-Man was widely praised. The Ultimate Universe was ultimately destroyed in 2015, and a few surviving characters were integrated into Marvel’s mainline universe. But the Ultimate universe very much inspired the tone of the MCU along with the idea of more grounded story-telling, combined with elements from the Mainline comics. The MCU is very much a hybrid of the mainline comics, the Ultimate comics, and its own unique spin on certain aspects. Though admittedly it's much closer to the Mainline comics, than the Ultimate comics.

@5:05 - Fury is talking about SHIELD security levels. Only level 7 agents and above are cleared to know what he told them. @18:50 - "How does Loki know so much?" - He had taken over Barton's mind with his scepter (the stick with the jewel). Barton was a high level SHIELD agent and had lots of inside information. @22:28 - No, it is making them fight. The scepter can fully control a mind with a touch, but it can also influence them from a distance. From Barton's information, Loki knew he was no match for his brother plus all the heroes and tech Earth had. So his plan all along was to get caught and make them all fight each other while the Chitauri invaded and took over. Loki's fatal mistake was killing Coulson, who was friends with most of the Avengers and brought them together to avenge his death.

Think of Hulk like a toddler and a giant body. He’s very emotional and impulse driven. And when he’s in a fit, he can’t be reasoned with, and he doesn’t think straight. Toddlers will lash out, scream, break things, but they also care about the same people that they hit. He lashed out on the carrier because they had built a cage for him, and right before he changed. They were all having a heated argument, he was confused because things just started blowing up, and Banner was angry at them before he changed, that carries over. In New York, Banner changed on purpose, he wasn’t in a rage and Hulk respects Cap. He knows basic right from wrong, but he gets carried away in his emotions. Just like there is no reasoning with a toddler having a tantrum. They can’t regulate, but they aren’t in tantrum mode 24/7.

Hulk and Banner's first transformation was triggered by an explosion, like others have stated. It was essentially triggering a large, scared, powerful beast in a new scary environment. Banner and Hulk have since found a way to work together and let Hulk "take control" with the relative risk being mitigated as Hulk can determine who are allies or not. But that's the tradeoff and risk: Immense unstoppable power, but a great deal of risk if he's set loose. Even the Hulk can't stop "HULK" from rampaging. Have fun with every movie going forward, it gets so much more heartfelt and crazy and fun from this point on!!

I read my first Avengers comic in 1992 and this movie came out 20 years later in 2012 and it was everything I dreamed of. The only real change from the comics is the lineup. Hawkeye and Black Widow were later additions, the superheroes Ant-Man and the Wasp were in the comics original lineup. But it's a good change, both Hawkeye and Black Widow were longtime Avengers (both eventual team leaders) in the comics. Also one other slight change from the comics is Captain America was still in ice when the team was founded. Hulk ran away in the team's first official meeting (issue2), the Avengers chased him down in issue 3 as their first official outing but failed, and in issue 4 on their way home, they instead found frozen Cap. I think the film version is a tad stronger than the comics. I rewatch this at least once a year.

If you want to dive deeper into the Hulk, I can’t recommend The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes (2010) enough. The early episodes do a great job of introducing each member of the team, with Hulk getting his own dedicated episode that really breaks down his character. The show kicks off with episodes focusing on Iron Man, then Thor, followed by Hulk, Captain America, and Ant-Man and Wasp. It’s a fantastic way to get to know the heroes that the MCU may skip over due to focus on other characters, or the case of Hulk legal issues. Then there’s a two-part episode where these heroes come together and form the Avengers, a good two years before the movie. All these episodes are 26 mins so all together its around three hours. Season 1 has 19 more episodes, and then there’s Season 2 with 26 more episodes. Would be a fun reaction, even if you only do the first 7 episodes and see if you enjoy it. The show is on Disney Plus :)

There are two more seasons (seasons 6 and 7) of 13 episodes each. I won't go into the politics within Disney / Marvel that was behind why the movies and the show diverged. Let's just say that after Season 1 of "Agents of Shield", Marvel's movie division shared less and less information with the television division. But it is generally agreed that the movies and "Agents of Shield" are connected through the end of season 5.

@@kaliwali From what I remember, the show mostly only ties in with the Phase 2 movies, so as long as you don't watch any episodes that came out after a Phase 2 movie before watching said movie, you should be good. Just make sure you keep track of the release dates of the episodes and movies so that you understand what they're tying into. There's also a ridiculous amount of other shows in the MCU, but Agents of Shield was the first one and the biggest one.

Agent Hill is awesome, she’s arguably 2nd in command of SHIELD, why she never got an origin story movie is beyond me. Thor v. Iron Man, Thor v. Hulk, it’s kind of a theme, boys will be boys as Natasha would say. I also think now is about the time that if you’re going to watch Agents of SHIELD, the tv show, you should start it. Check my math though, but it’s about this time they started to line that up with the movies. Tahiti is a magical place.

An interesting detail is that when Steve was falling through the ice, he took his pendant and placed it in front of him to think only of Peggy in his last moments. In Avengers, Stark, knowing that he would probably die after going through the portal, when he was unable to call Pepper, made Jarvis project an image of her in front of him for his last moments. Love in the UCM is very well handled in these moments and impacts even more on the feeling we have that that character is leaving

Fun fact . The area that was destroyed at the beginning of the movie was a school in New Mexico that was going to be torn down to make a new school so when Disney was looking for a place to blow up in the movie in New Mexico they found out about the school and gave the school district money 2 use the school as the place that was going to get blown up

Yeah the hulk character changes a lot as banner works on it, basically at this point the rage hulk and the intentional hulk (which they teased at the end of the hulk movie) are different, rage hulk is technically stronger but is uncontrollable, where as intentional hulk, while a separate entity from banner, and pretty dumb, is reasonable and can be worked with etc

Just an aside, in 1997 there was an article in popular mechanics where they were trying to put that same reflective camouflage on a fighter but it would require too much power to operate.

When thinking of The Hulk and Banner it’s better to think of it as DID than as Jekyll and Hyde. The comics go way more in depth into the DID concept

Hulk mood depends when he changes by himself, he can control himself, but if he was forced with angry he could lose its mind.

45:49 Marvel comics are famous for their heroes fighting one another as much if not more than fighting against their villains. The films just follow the same formula.

People always understandably think Hawkeye's just a really good archer, and he is, but he's much more. He always hits his mark unless the target moves or it's to trick them. He also has a superpower, he has the ability to see waaaay farther than the average human. Idk if he can "zoom-in" for lack of a better word, but he can make stuff out a long ways away.

35:48 "How is Hulk just, like, chilling now also? I don't know. I'm struggling with the Hulk character _(laughing)_ in this movie. Like, he's taking orders. He's not just randomly going after them. He knows that they're good so why did that entire thing with Black Widow even happen? But, it is what it is. If he's always angry, then he should be able to control it, right?" At the end of _The Incredible Hulk_ movie, it showed Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) learning to control his change into the Hulk. It should have also been fairly obvious in the SHIELD helicarrier scene between all the Avengers and Nick Fury when they were arguing that their emotions were being manipulated by Loki's scepter (and by extension, Loki) with the heavy camera focus on the scepter and the upside down camera angle on it as all the voices were being drowned out by the sound the scepter was making. The Hulk in particular was most susceptible to the scepter's manipulation due to his primitive mind. During the battle of New York, Hulk was free of the scepter's influence so therefore returned to is "normal" thought processes where he can distinguish between friends (like Betty Ross) and enemies (like Thunderbolt Ross).

Good Morning Kali…I enjoyed your reaction to The Avengers. This has to be one of my favorite marvel films. Can’t wait to see what movie will you react to next from the MCU. Keep up the amazing work and you’re close to 27k subs. You deserve it and here’s to many more. Have a good day and enjoy your Monday. 👍💯

The staff contains an infinity stone and manipulates the people around it to sort of hate and mistrust. I don't know if the infinity stone does that naturally or the staff can program it to mind control and stuff though, but I believe the staff causes those effects and not the stone. Each stone is supposed to do the bidding/wishes of it's holder. A little bit more will be explained in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Banner has multiple personalities and there are different levels of understanding, intelligence and anger when he's the Hulk. It's always been that way going back to the comics in the 1960s. He was never meant to be a superhero, but more like an old-school tragedy character like Jekyll and Hyde. He's sometimes a hero, but he's more often an anti-hero or an outright threat to society. The first time the character was used as an outright superhero was at the very beginning of the first Avengers comics, but he soon went back to being crazy and dangerous. There's always a hint that the Hulk is more intelligent and reasonable when Banner's personality is somewhat in control of him. In this case, Banner changed on purpose and not because he went into a sudden rage out of nowhere, meaning he's more in control. His two dominant personalities are working together in this case. The Hulk is usually childlike while also being angry and having god-like strength, making him always dangerous. But he can also be reasoned with, at least to some extent.

The scepter was influencing all of the Avengers but especially the Hulk. That's why Loki let himself be captured.

Now is the perfect time to watch Agents of Shield. It is a spin off from this movie, and one character in this movie is the lead of that show, wont say who because of spoilers but yeah. It ties into and explains a bit of some upcoming movies too. Fantastic show, highly recommend.
