I like the way they put the people in the shadows in the same light as current politicians. We have to have someone to throw under the bus - just so long as we don't in any way cast any light on our own part in things that didn't go well.

So apparently they initially wanted Maria Hill to be an antagonist and they thankfully changed their minds so the scene got deleted.

I'd see this as the contemporary sci-fi war movie cut, rather than superheroes dealing with aliens. I would have been less likely to see and enjoy this version. It's dark. If you want to see dark and hopeless go see 12 Monkeys again. I'm glad they didn't go there.
