i love this song. it starts as a sobering nightmare. then roughly halfway through, it's like watching the sun rise. a clear, triumphant, cloudless sunrise. the nightmare is over, it's a beautiful morning. cherish the ability to sing, cherish the gift of music, cherish the ability to not just exist, but *live.* it's one of the most beautifully triumphant songs ever.

This is one of the staples of my school choir. Once our director heard us sing it my sophomore year she wanted to keep it in our repertoire- I started off singing Bari by senior year I was singing 1st tenor. After weeks of breaking it into parts and doing it bit by bit we talked about what the song meant and how we would feel in a world without music and such- then once in our feels we sang it all the way through for the first time without stopping - we were all crying. It is so beautiful. We took it to contests and choral state contest along with The Creation for our Acapella piece - but hearing it with all the accompaniment from an orchestra is even more overwhelming. Love listening and even singing along. Fell right back into my part. Thank you!

I learned this in 7th grade of middle school and us, the 8th graders, and our high school’s choir were to sing it together at a concert. Sadly, someone’s grandma passed out during the concert so we couldn’t sing it, but at our middle school’s next band/choir concert, we sang this(with the 8th grade choir I think), and I’m glad for that even if it was way better with the high schoolers

Another update! It’s now second semester, and my choir teacher told us we’re going to sing it again! Apparently some of the upperclassmen requested to try to sing it again, so we are! I was so excited in class when we got them handed out, and I kept saying how excited I was to my friends. I’m genuinely so glad we have another chance to sing it, and I’ve had a voice part change since the first time I sang it so I have to relearn all of it besides the words, but it’s so amazing :)

This is beautiful. The comments here show the deep unifying power of a good, singable piece of music. It is something that was common decades ago. The average person one what it was like to sing harmoniously the Anthem, and other songs from America's Songbook. For for some reason, we gave that up. We handed it over to an industry that began by taking our songs, recording them, and selling them back to us.
