Fun fact: The Evil Dead was filmed in our woods behind my house in Morristown, TN. My mom used to take them water and cookies. Bruce Campbell disparaged our little town and was boycotted and blacklisted. He was finally allowed back into the city when they were going to use the site again for a sequel, but he had to make a public apology.

What did he say about the town??

@courtney.malone I don't actually remember verbatim but he was on a late night talk show, maybe David letterman, and he called it a Podunk place and made fun of the people. He was trying to do a bit, but it just was not funny. I don't think people had been exposed to his style of humor.

Brian, your positivity always brings me back to your channel! I have a couple of years on you, but one of my earliest memories is also going to the movie theater for the first time--He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword when I was 3 (I have an older brother, so of course). I also remember us walking into The Little Mermaid 20 minutes late. Jurassic Park was my first PG-13 movie in theaters. Sci-fi and adventure were my family's style, so the most horror I had seen were bits of B-movies on tv. I still remember the different sensations I felt between the T-Rex scene (paralyzed like a deer), and the velociraptors in the maintenance bldg and kitchen (writhing and squirming in my chair in terror). My little brother was only 7, there was a lot of discussion about whether or not he would be allowed to go. I'm pretty sure my parents caved. I didn't become a hardcore film buff until I was a teenager, when 4 things happened within a year of each other: 1) I decided to watch the entirety of It's a Wonderful Life on tv (I'd seen pieces of it so many times!), and fell head over heels with Jimmy Stewart, 2) Titanic--I was a 16 year old girl, so of course (and boy was I invested in that Oscar's ceremony!), 3) The AFI's 100 Years 100 Films--not sure how I knew it was on, but I watched the entire thing and printed the list afterwards to check off the movies I was able to track down at the library, and 4) La Vita E Bella broke the international cinema ice. I've been fascinated by different methods of visual storytelling ever since. My guilty pleasure is Ladyhawke--absolutely love that movie. No one can deny that Vittorio Storaro's cinematography is ethereal, no matter the film's other problems.

Sing Sing is the BEST MOVIE of the year and deserves nominations in most categories. The movie was shot on 16 mm film, in 19 days, with a very small crew. The DP, Pat Scola should be nominated for an Oscar for cinematography because the visual look, the lighting, the film choice, all created the naturalistic atmosphere to tell the story. Accompanied with Bryce Dessner's score that sells the beautiful scenes and intimate facial expressions. And kudos to the director, Greg Kwedar, who allowed dialogue to be ad-libbed at times, which created the emotional essence throughout the film that tugs at your heart. The cast deserves best ensemble because 90% of the cast are the formerly incarcerated men that participated in the RTA theater program while in Sing Sing and that authenticity shines. And what can you say about Coleman Domingo.... he deserves the Oscar this year, his performance is perfectly understated, and he allows the other men to shine because this is their story. Well Done!! Also, Clarence Maclin and Paul Raci both deserve best supporting nominations. Their performances tie the strings that pull the film to its brilliance. Best movie overall in a very long time and well worth the emotional journey.

Interesting Q&A. Never realized our lives had so many parallels. I was born in 1985, but still within the 2003 graduating year. I also grew up with those early Disney movies, as the first movie I remember watching in theaters was Oliver & Company. I remember the first time I saw any part of an Oscar telecast was the one celebrating the 1993 films. I distinctly remember watching Deborah Kerr get her honorary Oscar before I had to go to bed. Then I fully became Oscar obsessed after the ceremony honoring 1997 films with the Titanic sweep. It was here that our paths somewhat diverged. It was cool getting to hear of your adventures in the film industry and auditioning actors and writing screenplays and such while continuing to focus on all the categories of the Oscars, while I went on to a more standard career and focusing primarily on the Best Animated Short category at the Oscars. And now you're making KZbin videos while I'm just a guy watching KZbin videos. But I guess each of us are shaped by our experiences, and thanks for sharing yours.

My husband is a school teacher, so he doesn’t make much. So I guess I’m curious about that. I have been an Oscar aficionado since the 70’s. I’m the go-to person when a friend has a question about them. I used write down each category and nominee each year, study the trends and see where Oscar’s headspace was at. I also videoed the Oscars every year, but now with the invention of the internet, I can just do my history there. I hope you are enjoying your trip and can’t wait to hear all of your tales!

I just want to salute to you and really give you that big thumbs up button! Well, I also grew up in the 90s and grew to love films pretty much around the same time as you. And I want to say the movie that I can watch 1000 times will be, the fabulous Baker boys by Steve Kloves (start Michelle Pfeiffer and Jeff Bridges). I watched it for the first time when I was in high school maybe, due to my cousins recommendation. I was very young, but the movie has a more mature, stories about brotherhoods in their 30s, a dark contrast between the main characters about how they want to, or don’t want to, live the best out of their lives, in some humorous and sometimes romantic plots. It is also the time when I started to notice some nice jazz music and cinematic soundtracks. And of course, all the Star Wars series, especially episodes 1, 2 and 3. I can’t get enough of them!

I enjoyed hearing about the development of your love of cinema very much. If I had to pick one movie that was my first with "adult themes" (not necessarily R-rated), that would be "Peggy Sue Got Married" which came out when I was thirteen. "Back to the Future" had been one year earlier, and I was very intrigued by this very different time-travel story. Also, during the movie there was a girl in the row behind me that kept trying to talk to me. I was like, "Shut up, I'm trying to enjoy this!" I can't imagine that she was actually interested in me, but who knows. Why did you call your podcast "Film at Fifty"?

Moonlight, absolutely! I was so surprised at how deeply affecting that film was with none of the typical dramatic bells and whistles. I strongly disagree with you on the point that horror needs to be recognised more, because it is disliked as a genre for a reason! Two of the films that u noted may have a negative impact on the person. I myself am a survivor that was left for many years with severe excruciating panic attacks due to the aforementioned films that you noted! So now it is part of my legacy that i want to leave behind and protect innocent ppl from so much negativity. And by this legacy i mean spreading the word and experience so that the wellbeing and mental health of these ppl are saved and unharmed!! It took years for me to recover my mental health so now i can finally share my opinion and talk it out and raise the awareness! I warn any ppl of strong curiosity that ridiculous pathetic films like silence of lambs and exorcist may lead to extreme panic attacks and cause a very serious harm for your mental health!! They should be banned because simply put there are such things as too much and crossing the line! Shame on pathetic ppl who did those miserable excuses for films! And shame on you Brian for your stupid argument!!!
