At my wedding, both parents walked me down the aisle and when asked, "Who gives this woman away?" my parents both said, "She gives of herself with our blessing". I loved it and appreciated that sentence from our officiant.

When my husband and I got married we changed our last name all together. He came from a family that brought him much trauma and abuse and my last name was from my biological father who is estranged. He didn't want to give me his and we decided we were going to start our own lineage and a fresh start for both of us..And so after finding out our heritage and seeing where we both came from we picked our last name based on our ancestors in Ireland. Yeah, or even when someone will be like, "oh it's really nice he could HELP OUT", like yeah sure to an extent, but they are HIS children. Someone I know was separated from her husband, he lives decently far away because he is in the military and he had a chance to come visit and see his kids, and she was dealing with a bunch of things she needed to get done and take care of for herself, so that week he was able to watch the kids and change diapers and take care of them and she was able to go to doctors appointments and get her stuff done and she was saying how nice it was that he could HELP out, and I was like, absolutely that is nice he could be there so you could do all your stuff....but lets also not make this more than it is, they are his kids, he took care of his own children for a FEW days (while she was there too), which is something she does EVERY day. He isn't doing anyone a favor, he is never around, and he has CHOSEN to not be around more, he doesn't get a gold star for doing the bare minimum.

Hey Colleen! I’m a wedding videographer and just wanted to let you know that actually A LOT of the traditions are changing. For instance, at my wedding we didn’t do a garter / bouquet toss. A lot of people are doing away with that. Instead we did an anniversary dance and the couple married the longest got the toss bouquet. Also I’ve filmed many weddings where both parents walked the bride down the isle, and I’ve always heard husband and wife. In my experience no one says man and wife anymore. Another thing is that first looks are being widely more popular so couple aren’t even waiting till the walk down the isle to see each other anymore. The list goes on and on about all the “traditions” that are changing. Just a little encouragement for your day!

There’s also just the plain fact that if you don’t like it don’t do it. Don’t put everyone else down because you feel it’s “sexist” Like pretty much everyone knows that it’s not the father passing over his property and such. This entire section just really upset me. I thought it was gonna be more like “the planning is left to the woman” or something along those lines not knit picking phrases.

It's so weird and sad to hear, that it's "special" that a woman is the Vice President of the US. I'm from Germany and we're represented by a woman since 16 years, taxes don't variate depending on the gender they were made for (what's nonsense anyway). The word "Fräulein" (the equivalent to Miss) is outdated since 1971 and it's normal, that women keep their surname or that men adopt their wife's surname. Here, it's not Husband (Ehemann) and Woman (Frau) but "Ehemann und Ehefrau" (Husband and Wife) or "Mann und Frau" (Man and Woman). It's also normal, that fathers stay at home for up to a year after birth, the phrase "working Mom" (Arbeitende Mutter) or "Stay at home dad" (Zuhause bleibender Vater) doesn't exist here, at least I never heard them. The word "bitchface" is used for all people and you can breast feed as much as you want to, no one cares. I just had a bit of a culture shock.

Germany had a pink tax on pads and tampons etc. up until last year. It was deemed a luxury good as well with 19% taxes. It's changed now but only for companies to raise the price to the original and make more profits 😭 also if you go look at hygiene products (bei Dm, Rossmann etc) the ones that are supposed to be for females are more expensive even if it's the same brand. I think razors and deodorants are the best example.

the "you're now man and wife" thing is so interesting to me because here in brazil the sentence they say at weddings is "you're now husband and woman". and that's because in portuguese "woman" is a synonym of "wife", which in my opinion is also sexist because then the man can say their wife is "their woman". so basically here a married man is called "husband" and a married woman is called either "woman" or "wife", and i find it so weird. anyway just wanted to point that out

Couple things: -I was interested in the sexist traditions in weddings and I wanted Colleen to keep talking about it. -Men actually do sometimes get shamed for shaving their legs, but funnily enough that goes back to misogyny cause shaved legs are 'feminine' and 'gay'. -Also and this is probably a controversial stance to take, but I still stand by it: I feel like a lot of things Colleen mentioned is also female on female hate. How do we change that?

traditions like that not only have a history rooted in misogyny but they perpetuate all those ideas by simply wording things weird. plus outside of woke l.a., the ideas they perpetuate still play an active part in society simply because they're not refuted or changed. it's still assumed in a lot of places that the wife is subordinate to the husband precisely because that idea is reflected in common language at weddings and in other customs.. maybe we're not actively thinking "oh this woman is my property", bc by now we all now that that's immoral, but the way we view women is still perpetuated by sexist traditions imo..
@cosmicjules4 жыл бұрын
exactly! people may not actively believe in the ideas those traditions are based in but they will still affect people on a subconscious level. just the fact that these traditions are expected shows so much.

The most frustrating part about women's body hair expectations is that we do have to spend more money to upkeep ourselves. This is just one area, and I refuse to put money into nail salons, hair dressers, makeup, feminine clothing, etc. but shaving I cannot totally avoid because frankly im not that brave. I hate this so I shave only once a week, so my cost is like maybe $5-$10 a month on hair removal. so $60-$120 a year. I shave so little solely because of the expense. Honestly thats like a few days pay for me and I swear to god even this is just too much. Why do I need to do this thing and pay for this thing. I wouldn't feel the need to if i wasn't told that we're gross for it.

I feel like history itself is completely corrupted by the fact that woman had to change their last names... Think of how many woman had to change their last names unwillingly, it’s such a shame!!
@kat20253 жыл бұрын
Totally. It should have and should still be a choice. I know loads of women who would love to keep their last names and on the other hand I can't wait to get rid of mine lol. This seems to be the issue with basically all traditions, the option rather than the forced nature of something because its 'always been done this way'

I’m beginning to think Colleen’s coping strategy for when life gets stressful is Christmas. Its January and she has done two advent calendars since Christmas, and in the vlog from two days ago, she made a treat that she normally has around Christmas. Okay the thing that gets me mad about women claiming for equal pay is the women athletes asking for just as much money as the men's athletes do your research men get paid more in sports because they bring in a hell of a lot more revenue the difference between the NBA and the WNBA when it comes to revenue is millions and millions of dollars each year that's why Lebron James gets paid more
@danielmase2854 жыл бұрын
And then not to mention you talk about the everyday workplace statistically men work harder than women men take more dangerous jobs that pay more and men seem to be more ambitious in their career path if you want to see change change the statistics instead of becoming a statistic

On the topic of last names: my husband and I combined our last names to create our new family name. I didn’t want to give up my identity and he didn’t want to give up his, but we wanted to be a family unit, so we compromised and took the first part of his name and the last part of mine! In the beginning, not a lot of people understood it, but now they think it’s cool and unique 😊
