Hehe yeah. When I was these kids age, cassettes were the latest 'mobile technology' replacing LP's and if you had a personal cassette stereo cassette player that had Dolby stereo and recorded you were rich. I remember spending a weeks salary on a Kenwood one 1cm thick, and my music a shelf full of cassettes. It was a real bummer when the cassette players 'ate' them and all the tape came out like spaghetti wasn't it lol. Remember the 'splice fix' trick with sellotape?!

Me too, but I can't shake the feeling that he puts on the English accent. I mean, Simon pronounces the word "caliph" as cay-liff.. English people say cah-liff. Every video has a moment that makes me pause and wonder if he's putting the accent on or if he's trolling us.

The world is focused on China and Russia, but actually Khomeinist Iran has been the most successful post-Cold War state in expanding its influence and basically creating an Empire across the Middle East. Iran now has massive influence in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen and Gaza, has built up Hezbollah into a very formidable politico-military force that drove Israel out of Lebanon, and helps anti-Western regimes as far away as Nicaragua.

My friend (I’ll call him John) lived in Iran just prior to the Shah’s overthrow. My friend was Caucasian, his wife Iranian. Their son, obviously half Iranian. John had some high ranking friends involved with the overthrow. They told him, “Your wife is okay. However, we can’t promise your safety ~ or your son’s. Please leave before this gets out of our control. We like you and don’t want harm to any of your family but others in this movement don’t feel the same way.” My friend had to escape with his son under the cover of darkness. His friends (those involved in the Shah’s removal) helped him escape. It is much more detailed and interesting when he tells his situation. Thanks for posting this video.

It is a clear fact that the Man you're describing here was loved and highly respected by the people even after revolution & destructed war. Your expressions are good that does not mean your thoughts are based on fact,. In this regard one should try to research by primary persian sources, his speeches, writings and his nation can describe him best, not the biased media.

I went to the Mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini when I was in Iran last summer. It was the only time throughout the entire 15 days that I felt any bit of unwelcomeness. They didn't know that I was American, just a young western guy, but the people at that one location are the diehard conservatives. The rest of my time in Iran I would openly tell people that I was American and they would say "Welcome to Iran! I hope you enjoy your stay here!" and chat with me about my thoughts on Iran, their favorite things about America (the "American Dream," Los Angeles, NYC, the tv show Friends, etc) and just want to practice their English. Obviously I was interacting with everyday people, not the government, but I really enjoyed my trip. The mosques and palaces in Shiraz and Isfahan were especially amazing (as well as Golestan Palace in Tehran), and the food was delicious! Side note, you can tour the former American embassy now (it is essentially a propaganda museum now but there are old CIA relics etc on display).
