The Massacre of the Innocents: for the children of Bethlehem it was the most important day of their lives. For Herrod (and most contemporary record-keepers) it was Tuesday.
@PongoXBongo5 жыл бұрын
A single death is a tragedy. A million deaths is a statistic. ;)
@BranDenhauer5 жыл бұрын
For every contemporary record-keeper it was a Tuesday because it didn't actually happen. Given the excruciatingly detailed records of any actions by rulers under Rome, the fact that no record exists of thousands of babies being slaughtered on orders of the King (outside of one of the four gospels) says it was most definitely made up. The controversy among historians over this issue that Simon spoke of isn't that much of a controversy. There is a near perfect consensus among the vast majority of historians that the slaughter of the innocents was made up to add a parallel between Jesus and Moses. There is a tiny minority of vocal dissenters, but as these are all hardcore Christians their bias nullifies their opinion.

There's also doubt about Jesus being born in Bethlehem at all, as there are no accounts of Roman censuses where every family had to go back to the place their ancestors from 100s of years ago were from. Jesus is always described as growing up in Nazareth, around 100 miles away. Only Mathew and Luke mention Bethlehem, maybe because it was considered the birthplace of David, so would strengthen the claims of Jesus having been the Messiah.

While I'm not a historian and have absolutely no authority on the subject, I do really like this period of history, and you did a great job covering it, to the point where my only nit pick would be that at 17:21 you talk about Jerusalem but show a picture of the Cave of The Patriarchs and Matriarchs. While the building seen is indeed a Herodean structure, and in fact is basically a miniature version of what the Temple Mount walls would have looked like, it's actually in Hebron. If that's the level of detail I have stoop to in order to complain, I'd say you did a good job.

He was a Mormon, and interestingly, proved conclusively that the Book of Mormon was false and a complete fantasy, as is the entire Mormon religion. Nothing Joseph Smith wrote or said was ever true, his whole family were dedicated fraudsters and liars. Joseph became a murderer in his final hours, just before he and his small coterie of believers were lynched by an angry mob of men who had been robbed by Smith, and whose wives he had defiled by his lies.

King Herod, cool... I be big on history and what I like about this is the deep understanding of this historical figure so many of thousands of years old. Told with an engaging non-boring respect of history's shape makers that many now-a-days think as boring nonsense. Plus this is good entertainment like watching a movie or reading a book. Very cool presentations... Do I have a suggestion for a possible Bio...??? Do one on "Edward D. Wood Jr." Put it in the file box and think about it. Good stuff. That is one thing about history bios the source material never stops.
