When reading any story, we are Azathoth. That's the theory in motion that I most appreciate. That the stories and characters only exist while we read them, the plane brought to life by our lucid imaginations is subject to our attention, and supplemented by the lack of it. Our dreams are a seemingly infinite continuation of all the multitudes of existence that are obliterated once we stir. Once we close that book. We are Azathoth.

Azathoth is my favorite Lovecraft deity. It is the logical conclusion of cosmic horror: our creator is this completely alien, blind, incomprehensible mass of chaos instead of a being with purpose. The ultimate existential fear that our existence is some cruel cosmic joke with no greater purpose.

The Azathoth "Theory" was barely a theory at all. Hell, it was barely a hypothesis. The only thing we "knew" was that making the 6 month round-trip to the Desecration Zone, no small feat in of itself, and sacrificing the blood of 12 goats, 3 rams, and 7 cursed bulls, was the only way to stop the slow but sure advance of this cursed monstrosity towards what was still left of civilization. The barren, stricken land left in its wake was the last proof that anything had ever lived here. Our sacrifice was the last line of defense. The problem is that every 6 months we aren't here, this thing travels ever closer to the Last Castle.
