The B-50 Superfortress. A stop-gap bomber.

B-29's and B-50's still had a life after they became obsolete as bombers. They were widely used as tankers... And smaller numbers were used for weather reconnaissance, jet engines testbeds, launchers for bell X-1... That contrasts with the B-36 : B-36's were scrapped when they became useless as bombers, no conversion was found for them.

B-29's were the first of what I'd call a "big" aircraft. Under powered and suffering from engine fires, with 5,200 more hp, and strengthened structure.....the sleek KB-50 (without the gun turrets) was a powerful thing of beauty. Getting 28 cylinders to run smoothly is a miracle of PWA!

My dad was in the Air Force in the fifties at Bergstrom AFB and witnessed and emergency refueling of a B-52 by a KB-50, as Bergstrom at the time couldn't land a B-52. He said the KB-50 had to power dive to get enough speed to link with the -52 and the -52 then dragged the -50 by the refueling hose.

Yes. Lucky Lady II was the first to circumnavigate the globe nonstop.

Was the B-50 used in the Korean War? If not, why?

It was a little bit used in the Korean war but not much. It was a long-range strategic bomber, not really needed in Korea.
