The B-58A, like the F-104 series aircraft, looked like they were going Mach 2 sitting on the ground! I never saw an actual B-58 fly, but I saw plenty of F-104s while I was stationed at Nellis AFB, Nevada from 1976 to 1977. Their performance in the air matched what you'd expect seeing them parked on the ramp!
@tomcline56312 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm too young to have seen them either.(49 years old)but my dad talks about the B -58s flying over Missouri when he was a kid. One of the pilot's was from the middle of Missouri somewhere,and they would route their cross country supersonic flights through/over north western and down through the central portions of Missouri. He said the Sonic books would shake the whole house! When I was a kid in the early eighties, we lived north east of Whitman Air Force Base towards KC MO and we were on the flight path of the B-52s headed up towards the aluminum umbrella airborne holding areas. Used to year/feel flights of B-52s flying over all the time!

I used to have a 1/48 scale model of a B-58...it was massive and looked amazing. I was a stupid kid and didn't do the best job putting it together and the paint job left a lot to be desired but the thing looked cool. Had it on a shelf above my 1/48 scale SR-71 (which was also massive). I think my brother was baby-sitting the neighbors kids and one of them broke both models and I was really sad about that at the time. - Great video! - However not entirely true. - For one; the one & only prototype was flown in a big circle during the air show to give western onlookers the impression that the Soviets had a fleet of bombers that bested the *B-52's.* - Although it stired up quite a bit of frenzie to most westerners during the cold war. It was a turkey. Nearly impossible to fly and greatly under preforming. An; *All show & no go!* turkey. And that's why only one was ever built. > But here is the kicker; - Unlike the general public, Bomber manufactures in the USA were not impressed with the sleek bird. They were shocked that the Soviet engineers got the airfoil chord length & location of the wings all wrong. And could not believe the builders were so stupid. - However this fact was not passed down to congress or the general public because the hysteria of this fantastic looking bomber fueled the funding for the *B-58 & B-70,* American responce to the threat. - The down side was the fear of the general public of an immanent Soviet nuclear bomb loaded squadrons of sleek looking *M-50 Bombers* attack on their homes. - They were reminded of this threat every time they passed by an *Army Nike Hercules* anti-aircraft missile battery & radar trucks.stationed near their homes at fenced in areas at recreational parks along side children's playgrounds & swings & baseball diamonds. >Lesson learned; *- Looks can be deceiveing!*

Looks like they tried to copy the B-58 Hustler bomber, but on a bigger scale. And just like the B-58, it had a lot of problems.
