I was the first one to my knowledge that had this happen. It's caused by bolt fatigue. It is a real thing, the bigger issue is that BMW does not reproduce the cam bridge. I have spares if anyone needs a cam bridge.

I have seen some cam ledges fail even with the stronger 10.8 tensile strength bolts so I’m Not fully convinced it is caused by bolt fatigue, but I do think it could be a contributor for the issue.

@NoClutchGarage Well, let me rephrase that. Mine broke under fatigue, we took a hard look at my bolt. That was the census on mine. Mine broke about a 1/8 inch inside the head. That was odd in itself, now mine was the first one and we figured that one had the most stress. Now you had said, other ones had failed further back. Need to have them reproduced with maybe 7078 definitely something other than cast aluminum. Probably there is liability. Like I said, I looked into having them CNC-milled. Nobody I spoke to wanted to touch them. What did you end up doing? Same as me?

@@mattpowers3081 Yeah I gave my old head and swapped out a cam ledge. Not the ideal thing to do as you know but I was desperate to figure out a solution short of having some custom billet ones made and going through the trouble of line honing the head. I do agree with you that number 1 is the most often culprit as there is no good amount of support there as there is towards the cam sprocket.

BMW have done an upgrade and now run 2 long bolts on the cam cap so both bolts secure to the head, instead of the one long bolt all the way to the head and one short bolt which only bolts to the bridge.

I just discovered this video. I had the same issue in my b48 but the bolts broken and the intake cam snapped. 1 year on, how it the car running ? Did you buy a donor head and swap in the cam ledges & cams only? Did you have the ledges machined to your hear or directly put them on ? I'm very interested because I've been told to change the full head and not just the ledges because they're supposedly machined to the head itself.
@NoClutchGarage3 күн бұрын
What you have heard is correct. The proper way to fix it is to swap the head or find a set of cam ledges somewhere and have them line honed to your head

@@NoClutchGarageaha thanks for confirming. Now I don't feel bad for buying a full head and head gasket. Bolts. Other gaskets etc.

What oil were you running? You think there might be a common oil weight for this? I've heard of people hearing the cams less after going 5w40. Wonder if TU and TU2 cam ledges were changed
@NoClutchGarage Жыл бұрын
This has happened on Gen 1 and TU, I have not heard of anything on TU2 but the whole intake and exhaust side has been reworked. I use 5W-40 oil
