She's seen as 'a demon' because she's a tiny girl with the mind of a middle management japanese man who also was, apparently, a war otaku since he's got a firm handle on assorted strategies and tactics for war used from both world wars and going up to more modern times, implementing parts thereof where it applies to her squad of elite mages results in a little tactical genius and a special forces grade unit of mage troops who are themselves basically attack helicopter gunships in human form in terms of their firepower and mobility in a theatre of war that is basically world war 1 but with mages being a thing (but noone knows how to use them like she does). She also has a very mature approach to war, how to wage it and the ethics that apply in wartime... Plus a burning hatred for the god-like being X that put her in this world and situation to begin with. Which naturally makes the ww1 era people around her see her as an unnaturally hardened veteran who lives, breathes and probably dreams of war as her reason to live when in actual fact little could be further from the truth, she'd love to see the wars end so she can live a comfortable life in peacetimes. But of course being X wont let that happen so since war and danger is unavoidable, she aims to Win. Oh and as for the appearance... The author apparently requested the animators deliberately make the faces of Tanya and her lady second in command as unattractive as possible in a (ultimately completely ineffective) attempt to keep people from drawing lewds of them. Reading the manga or artwork based on the novels will show what they are supposed to look like.

@@vladerag being a sociopath does not magically endow you with knowledge of wartime history, tactics and strategies used throughout the ages to the point that you can practically implement and adapt those for use in Actual combat, war and for training your own special forces combat unit in a world where Magic exists (and special forces training regimes did not). If he is not an otaku or at least fan of the topics in question, then he's just a fricking genius apparently who was able to just keep all that stuff from when he learned it in high school or something. The sociopath thing is also highly dubious, back in japan the only crime he was guilty of was being a middle management person with the unenviable task of firing an inept worker from the company and not feeling very shook up about it. As for his behavior as Tanya... He literally got shoved into an alt-verse world war 1 era as a little orphan girl, with magical talent so staying out of the military was NOT an option, it was volunteer now or get conscripted later. So he was forced to go the military route, become a soldier and participate in war with the added paranoia-inducing fact that there's a 'being X' pulling strings behind the scenes to Literally make her life more dangerous and violent no matter what she does... And yes she's rather strict and demanding of the people she's ordered to train, but you have to keep in mind that this is war... If the recruits screw up? People (on their side) die, if Officer recruits screw up? A lot of people (on their side) will die and, if there's enough of that, the war could be lost. Do recall that for the two officer recruits who got sent to a pillbox, her initial punishment was for them to get sent back, away from the frontlines to be trained until they either learn not to disobey mission orders (because that shit gets people killed), or they get drummed out of military service and made civilians. They refused that and insisted to be kept 'in the fight', so she put them where they could do the least harm to her own side. Harsh maybe, but she was not wrong in what she did.

Tanya had left several people - how do I put his - _concerned._ The short answer is: networking and a comedy of errors on Tanya's part. See, she doesn't actually want to be on the front lines, she wanted a domestic post. However, as a reincarnated sociopath with a decent knowledge of history, she is simply too competent at tactical command to be wasted on a desk job. Combine that with her active attempts at making friends in high places - remember, sociopathic businessman in a little girl's body - and the people who realize that Tanya is one step away from the line of committing war crimes - in the wrong direction might I add - get overruled. Although, technically, Tanya has never committed a war crime. Yes, she absolutely has shot unarmed civilians, but because of legal chicanery they were all considered enemy combatants at the time. In fact, the particular horror of that part comes from her proposing how to abuse international law and treaties to redefine the people she needed to kill as enemy combatants. She noticed a loophole, the lawyers checked it and agreed, and then she firebombed a city. You gotta be careful writing those things, ya know?

as i pointed out in the original video, the anime sort of reframes some things to make tanya look more evil than she actually is. for example, the dude who pushed her before the train was let go because he actively and knowingly stole money from the company and was harrassing people, not just because he was some poor sap who happened to have bad performances due to family issues. similair, the dudes she send to die repeatedly endangered others by disobeying orders and were harassing other soldiers who were conscripted because they thought they were hot shit since they "were brave enough to volunteer instead". lastly, while tanya's methodes are cruel, they are arguably the pragamtic thing to do and the fastest and overall least bloody way to put an end to the war. subdue the enemy in one cruel but effective strike, instead of being humane and letting the battle drag out over multiple locations over the next years, causing innocent bystanders to suffer. (Also, the empire did nothing wrong. no, really. the whole war started because some politicians in a neighbouring country had a bad year and decided to raise moral by trying to lay claim to some territory they held 100 years ago, but currently belongs to the empire. so, when they marched in and were like "eh, the empire is too chicken to do anything", turns out the empire was in fact not too chicken to do anything about it.)

Tanya's Japanese VA does the voice for Clementine from Overlord so that's a double crossover for Isekai Quartet lol...now if only the movie would get a physical DVD/Blueray release in the states..I haven't found one yet and I've looked...maybe they are waiting till the second season comes out? The main thing with Tanya is her actions are often morally wrong but legally justified as far as actions taken against enemy nations and hostile combatants. She even went so far as to write up a document detailing how you can subvert international war laws without legal issue. It's usually the fact she is very ruthless in battle, and just as harsh on her subordinates at times. If you disobey one of her orders, at best you getting a beating, at worst she'll get you killed. She does things rather efficiently, and doesn't really care about people's feelings or if they end up nearly dying (like when she was training her own battalion, they endured hell akin to actual warfare, they were almost as likely to die during training as they would fighting on the frontlines. This is why a lot of her men fear her more than they do any enemy, cause they at least think they have a chance against most enemies, but against her, they do not like their odds of survival if they piss her off. So yeah, while her actions are almost always justified, and legal. She does push the boundaries on that, as well as the fact her actions are often morally dubious at best, completely evil at worst.

Yeah...fun fact they leave out in the anime but is mentioned in the Light Novel and shown in the manga..when she goes against the squad that ambushes her on her solo recon mission around 5:04? She actually uses magic to buff herself..she increases her reaction time, increases the amount of damage she can do in an instant with "Instantaneous force increase"", blocks her ability to feel pain and opens her magical circuits all the way...it's LITERALLY in the manga called "Doping with magical interference"...she's all juiced up and ready to rumble so on top of the adrenaline that comes from going into the situation naturally she dopes herself up with magic so she's even more ready to fight, it's why she starts laughing cause of how powerful she feels. The anime does leave some things out when it comes to context that you'd have to read the light novel or manga to see, it also makes her more distant and cranks up her 'evil' moments so she looks even more deranged. Context left out of her training of the squad is she WANTED them to quit so she could get put in the back lines, hopefully at a desk job..she DOESN'T want to fight in this war, she wants to live a peaceful life to spite Being X/God for sending her to this world of war...and she tries HARD to make it seem like she should be put behind a desk..but she just makes herself look MORE patriotic and warmongering every time. In the Light Novel it's explained that the man who reincarnated into Tanya with all his memories, believes 100% in Signaling Theory...but the signals Tanya sends out are misconstrued and keeps getting her more on the front lines..and even when she realizes this she STILL keeps going with Signaling Theory believing it will work.

Tanya is very intelligent, hence why her higher ups puts up with her. She even coined the concept of a ”world war” in that world to describe what was happening. When asked what to to about the hopless situation the military was in, Tanya proposed a special aerial mage batallion that can fly around and reinforce areas as needed. Tanya didn’t want any part of it mind you, but as they say, no good deed goes unpunished, and the generals put her in charge of the unit she herself proposed. After all, who’s better to take control than the person who came up with it, since she obviously understands the unit’s purpose quite well.

I think because Tanya is lawful evil during wartime it can be hard to see how bad she actually is. I think Cj really dropped the ball not explaining how she actively manipulates laws and situations to cause as much death and destruction, for entirely selfish reasons. He also didn't get into how everyone around her looks at the lengths she goes to in horror.

I believe the real moral this anime is trying to tell is how the grinding monotony of the layers of bureaucracy behind each power that makes it impossible to stop the movement of men, metal and magic towards the front line, lest their enemy break the stalemate. The heinous warcrimes that come about because of this ‘banal evil’ is what is meant to shock the audience into retrospective. Using a little girl to do this is a little genius because no one assess a little girl evil just like most people wouldn’t normally view a bureaucracy as evil.

God is the one entirely at fault for everything Tanya does. Isekai with magic powers for refusing to worship .magic powers ensure drafting. WW1 was about to start. God wanted anya to be desperate,and bend the knee,and threatened with permadeath of the soul should she die in a violent manner. So since a draft into what she knew was shaping up to be WW1 was unavoidable,she volunteered. Got a head start of years. Did a good job,getting injured in a natural way in her first battle to get recognition. Hoping for an officer job in the back lines. Something they don't mention in the anime is that they use magic to stimulate adrenaline and other hormones. That's the main reason she has the homicidal smile in battle. It's a 7-10 year old body pumped full of fight juice . When training her squad,she was setting unrealistic standards and tough training on purpose. She wanted them to quit. If a decent number quit,she might get an extension on the month she has to train them,which means more time out of the front lines. The avalanche was caused by one of them screaming curses at her,VERY LOUD, in snowy mountains. That's the same guy she kicked the shit out of. She did it to get the snow out of his lungs. But god is a cheater. He put paperwork in the right place for candidates. He had her file "happen" to be the one to come up when testing an unstable weapon. He gave a dream to a scientist to make it better. He rigged it to never work and only explode if doesnt Tanya pray. Any time she prays,he brainwashes her little by little.as far as we know,she wears a rosary against her will because of the brainwashing.since she's the only one to be able to use it,she's always on the front lines. they didn't light up the whole Dakian capital,only the ammo depots and shit after giving a warning as required by international law. God also allowed 3 different prayers focused on one person on the enemy side to come true, creating a supersoldier that is out to kill her specifically . Tanya is by no means a good person, but every life she ended is on God's hands.

the thing CJ left out that really gets me, is that this started because "god" was mad that she wasn't giving him any respect. Dude met "god", and said "fuck you, I'm an atheist." The reason why they got sent to WW1, had a gun powered by faith, and had a literal Mary Sue show up was all because "god" wanted to force them into a situation where they would be desperate enough to believe and bow. The entire anime is about a guy defying "god" to his face, and that's why tanya is called "evil". It's not the savagery. It's the fact that they are in defiance of "god".
