Covers without a vocalist are cool because you know the words and you can't help sing them to yourself, but they've tweaked the melody and rhythm. It's like re-discovering the song - with you involved.
@CPickswell2 жыл бұрын
very nicely captures the vibe that the lyrics are supposed to put off in this song, it is about a stalker after all. My favorite part is when the piano repeats "I'll be watching you, I'll be watching you, I'll be watching you" over and over around 6:02

when you realize the bass notes of the piano are in unison with the bassist and it's not even improv at all
@innapinch71124 жыл бұрын
Almost nothing they do is improv. Also notice that at least in the first few minutes, at the same time the bass is playing along with Iverson's left hand, the drummer is playing along with his right hand. As in, when he's playing the melody part straight, he does straight drumming. However when he goes into playing it "sloppy", he drums along "sloppily".

The critics seem to come in two camps --- those who are defending jazz against the Bad Plus onslaught, if you will, and those who dig the rock and pop music and cannot get behind the deconstructions of Iverson and Co.. What seems to be happening in this music is that there is an unhappy marriage between two things, and each seems to be fighting the other for dominance. It is easy to tell the rock fans that they do not understand Jazz, or that Jazz lovers are stuck in the past. My criticism is based on a different observation. When I hear these performances I do not hear opportunities in the original material being exploited in real time. That is, I am not hearing an exploration of the interstices of the composition, nor much between and among the performers. Rather, there is a placement of ideas on top of one another. Iverson's deconstructions seem top heavy in many regards. He is playing on top of everything, and his ideas are heady and unsubtle. His reharmonizations don't sneak up on you from within the material, but get tossed in your face or over your head all the time. They seem to be coming from a private workshop of his own, and then released on top of whatever is going on. That is, the ensemble itself, and the live moment does not seem to be the garden from which he harvests his ideas. He grows them in a laboratory. The ensemble, to me, has the effect of not really being present in the music. Some of the problem, no doubt, owes itself to a poor choice of material from which to harvest the kind of internal ideas improvisers can do something with. All that is left, then, is to draw on externally contrived gestures which superficially make it seem hipper than it is.
@keithklassen53208 жыл бұрын
+William Winslow I think that you have accurately described the dissonance of ideas in The Bad Plus' music, but it seems as though you think that those dissonances are a failing, whereas I'd say that they are intentional. Your analysis is coming from an ideological position about art that this band exists to challenge.
@williamwinslow65828 жыл бұрын
+Keith Klassen I understand the dissonances to be intentional as well. I have certainly enjoyed Iverson's playing, and the playing of this ensemble. Also, I name Charles Ives as a favorite composer who was a layerer-on-of-things composer par excellence. And I like when "cats play out" and all that stuff. Really, I am wondering if the choice of material is the best for this kind of treatment, and I especially wonder if Iverson is hearing new possibilities in the music in the moment, or is opening up a hoard of pre-composed stuff to smear on top of a pop song. Anyway, it has the overall impression of being a tad ironic, as opposed to any kind of serious homage to the spirit of these songs. I am certainly OK with an artist discovering something completely crazy in a chestnut, and doing a zany take on it. And I don't want my own criticisms to be taken too seriously. But I think I would prefer the craziness to sound as if it were discovered within the piece --- some kind of stone, so to speak, gets turned over, and there is all this weirdness to exploit built into the song if only we were genius enough to notice ---- or hear a great artist bring out. But with TBP I tend to think weirdness is getting imported from without. I guess that is fine to do. But I don't think the latter is as profound as the former.
@jazzwonderboy7 жыл бұрын
That is the best bit of criticism I have seen on youtube. I haven't worked out yet if I agree but overall given their adventurism and novelty (this is 13 years ago!) it seems a bit mean-spirited to comment post-TBP as if what they are doing has been done before or, like, you tried it out on the piano once and thought "Nah". This is original, and clever, and that counts for stuff. Through-composed jazz as opposed to all improvised is a battle that was fought and won a long time ago.
@nobodady17 жыл бұрын
Well, it is possible to come across as mean-spirited simply in offering criticism as opposed to accolades. But I think my respect for the group and Iverson should come through, notwithstanding my criticism. I think, at the heart of my criticism is a sensibility about where originality comes from and expresses itself in performing material that is not one's own. I have heard Iverson say in an interview that the other members are the ones who bring in the Rush and the Pink Floyd, etc., and that Iverson does not even know these tunes. That this is the way these items on the repertoire get developed is not hard to hear. Iverson sounds like his muse is "elsewhere". Are these tunes a native fascination to him, or are they merely exercises in pleasing his friends while he gets away with playing jazz?
@jazzwonderboy7 жыл бұрын
Yes, quite possibly the latter... but he is hardly the first to be guilty of this! For that matter, while pointing this particular finger, I wonder if even the originators of these popular tunes were truly expressing their inner muse when writing them. Cynics point to certain formulae for successful songs. There are a number of musicians - Prince, McCartney, Paul Simon etc - who, once successful, go down a pretty weird and idiosyncratic musical alley, followed by a tiny minority of the people who liked their early, more generic stuff.

@RobertDeMiedo8 жыл бұрын
@robertozarrabal32518 жыл бұрын
Saludos
