The Baddest Garbage Truck Around - Straight Piped 3306 Cat - Maxon Legal One

So Alex and I were in LA, more or less just cruising around to see what we could find. We ended up having NASA's '87 Peterbilt 310 Amrep Octo merge on the freeway right in front of us and so we followed it for nearly 45 minutes through early morning rush-hour.
After only managing 2 clips before losing the truck, we drove off discouraged. We got about 2 blocks down the road before Alex and I both caught this truck out of the corner of our eyes in a small shopping area.
To put things into perspective, this truck was filmed at one stop a coupe years ago and shared on facebook, so we knew it existed. However that was back when LA Waste & Recycling / Millennium Waste owned it. So after SoCal took possession of their trucks, this truck was put on Craigslist and so we assumed it was done for. Or at least as far as my chances of ever seeing it on route are concerned. So imagine my surprise when we saw this in a parking lot, running route again! We were headed the opposite way that the truck went and we were stuck at a red light, just watching it drive off. Anyone of you who's tried following a commercial truck in a car knows that feeling. So the moment the light changed, I flipped a u-turn before any other cars had a chance to go, and that is the only reason we got even one clip of this truck. Little did I know at the time, that was just one of a series of questionable driving decisions I'd make. But (thankfully) all went smoothly, and when it was all said and done, I ended up with a solid 12 minute video for you guys! Pretty good considering we completely lost it 2 times. Luck was certainly on our side.
Alright, story-time is over. This truck is easily the most amazing truck I've ever filmed, and I doubt I'll ever find something better than this either. Legal Ones have always been one of my favorite front loaders, and if you know me, you know that I am a sucker for black rims on a truck. But this one took it to a whole new level. Just paint the whole dang body black. Throw in some yellow to really make it pop (and prevent idiots from rear ending it) and you have the most visually appealing truck I've ever filmed.... BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! Take my second favorite engine, the L10 Cummins (actually, turns out its a 3306 Cat, but still awesome) and just straight pipe it. Who needs a muffler? Let 'em know you're coming!
But in all seriousness, this was a blast to film. A huge thank you goes to the crew for allowing us to tag along for over an hour to make this video. And thank you to SoCal Waste for running this truck.
One last thing, this truck was completely reconditioned by Amrep not too long ago. All components repaired or replaced, so it's basically a new packer body again. Try to find the Amrep badge ;)

I did 700,000 with one of these motors, thank GOD I had a sleeper, and a Donaldson muffler back there on the stack. I would have gone crazy listening to this day in and day out. 3306B's are bulletproof. Keep oil in the crankcase and coolant in the block, they'll never leave you anywhere. Yeah, they're only 300 hp, but I got 9mpg with the thing, and never spent a cent on repairs, just oil changes and preventative maintenance. Can't say the same for my co-workers with their 3176's and 60-series. I even kept pace with guys with those 310/370 Cummins M-11, they climbed hills better, but I got better fuel mileage.

I enjoyed reading the story about how you came across this and almost lost it, until your "questionable driving decisions" hehe Damn this thing is a beast, like it's your standard size FL up there, but how about the character that sound gives it. This machine is loud enough through the computer, so I can only imagine what it must've been like in person, absolutely mammoth... I bet that woman at 5:30 was scared the truck was going to eat her lol So loud and intimidating :P I couldn't miss those flashing arrows beside the arm cylinder at the start of the video... would've been so much more suitable pointing downwards with a sign stating "LISTEN HERE" hahaha I bet this is a truck you wouldn't find working at 3am, you'd probably get enough noise complaints from it at midday. It does look the part too, all black with that hint of brightness... a special machine all around it seems. Love the growling from this engine and exhaust, I wonder what it would sound like with twin pipes, one on each side of the truck! Be awesome hearing this truck take off and floor it through the gears, it'd be an earthquake happening.

Those questionable driving decisions were probably the best bad decisions I've made in a long time haha. This is a truck that you cant even begin to compare to anything sound wise as I've heard nothing like it before. Truly a blast to be near. I'm sure they do hear from some of the more snooty people about noise from this truck haha and what gets me is that it runs in a completely open-market area too. Guess it doesn't scare any customers away because they're a pretty go sized company. However the new contracted commercial plans that LA approved has booted them along with almost every other local hauler from the city, so this trucks days are numbered.

+ExcavatorsnTrains135 This style of body is something you really only find in Southern CA now and 3-4yd containers are the norm here. Anything larger is very uncommon. Though many places these do collect 6 and 8 yard containers, but the majority of us who film these style trucks don't live near the cities with larger containers.

Just listening to this beast again, can't get over that sharp roar! Man! Best sounding 3306 Kittycat around! Now, I'll be heading down to SoCal in a couple weeks, and I want to check out this truck when I'm there. I have a couple questions. Is this truck a WX64 or a WXLL? If you don’t have a L. A. Franchise zone in Los Angeles which there are only 7 haulers . So I think your out of luck. All others had to close there doors . Some Company’s where in business over 45-50 years. Just like that Gone!!

Basil Taylor haha thanks for the comment. Its tough to find trucks like this, but the vast majority that still sound nice are over 15 years old. Anything newer than that are all near silent. Thanks to the good weather we have here, trucks dont rust and as a result, stay in good condition for many years so its very common to find trucks older than 15 years old still roaming the streets. But with new emissions laws here the trucks are being forced off the roads at a high rate.

Same here in UK , most of our Dust Carts(Garbage Trucks) have the latest low emission engines and god they sound pathetic,!!! My eight year old Hoover Washing Machine is noisier than the newest bin wagons, especially on the spin cycle. I want a dustbin wagon to wake the f--g dead!!!, that 3306 kittyCAT meeeowing fit to bust via a straight horizontal exhaust . Squealing brakes wheezing air chambers,and oh wow that sweet sounding power take off when the driver backs off the throttle after lifting a skip (dumpster) full of rubbish(garbage) then mash to the floor the old loud pedal to compress the crap in the back,and bring the kittyCAT back on song. Forget the Westminster Cathedral Choir, give me a straight piped kittyCAT Scammell Crusader 22 wheeler,and i am happy as a Dachshund with two dicks.

Yeah you can do whatever you want while packing. Some newer trucks limit you on some BS safety crap but these old trucks were made for real drivers.

Bluesocks 11 yes it can I drove one you can drive and pack then at stop put in neutral and pack it but some came with the PTO you don’t need to be in neutral to move the arms or packer thats cool when stabbing a bin if you need to adjust the forks or arms it is cool just pull control in gear they move the way older front loaders you need to be out of gear to move arms packer I remember those very well.
