Linh sits underneath the large fronds of a banana plant, he chooses this spot because he thinks it makes for a nice background. He's not wrong, but the large leaves also offer something else important, shade from the sun.
It is the hottest part of the day and many other people in the village are taking a break from the midday sun. During this time it's not unusual to hear the sáo being played, a simple flute made from bamboo which is popular in the countryside of Vietnam.
Linh plays the popular song 'Mùa Hoa Lê' which means 'The flower season'. Played solo on the flute it becomes beautifully simple and we hear all the breathy intonation and pitch changes. The song also has lyrics and can be played by a full complement of musicians. With me watching the performance my friend Thành mouths all the words, it's his favourite song.
