This is the one piece from that thing, that amazing event so long ago that can never occur again, that I will always watch, and hear, again, and again. Snotty Neil Young addressed him as Neil Sedaka, the others in the Band didn’t want him on the show, like everything always went for me and you in high school, but Robbie stood up for him, being the stand-up guy he’s always been, got him on the lineup, and Neil Diamond just blew out the lights, for me and for many others in the audience and ever after, the highlight of that stellar night.

Cool story thanks and the best highlight og the last waltz. But another recording on youtube with colour has got a better sound. Filmed in 76, (elvis passed away in 77) relesed in 78, than republished on dvd 2002 with more true stories and interview. 7 films 32 mm Martin Scorsese. Among best music dokumentary ever, says the clever people. Wild and deep film with drama and many invited guest stars; Bob Dylan as a true pussycat and dramqueen singing 3 songs stealing the stage, while others only sung one; Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Emmylu Harris, Van Morrison and more. Fantastic moment for The Band, Manuel should be more visual and shown in the movie like the croud and Ron Wood and Ringo Starr were not really show on film eighter. A nice farvel for The Band, 4 members RIP ♥️ esj 🇫🇴

I suspect Neil Young was joking in a good humoured way. He's well known for being a good guy and I couldn't see him disrespecting a fellow musician in that way.

It was like slaping them on the face with a white glove! He gave an impecable performance. A lot better than any of the others. Then, he got back in hjs plane and went on to Thanksgiving dinner with the family! CLASS!!!

Neil finishes, walks offstage and Dylan is there. "Top that!" says Neil. "What do I have to do, lie down on stage and take a nap?" says Dylan. Mee-ow.

Absolutely a great song. But lets not kid ourselves - -Neil Diamond is on the stage because Robbie invited him, after Robbie produced Neil's current (at that time) album Beautiful Noise. He tried to justify Neil being there by saying he was part of the American music story Tin Pan Alley blah balh blah . The other guys in The Band were like yeah ok whatever Robbie - lets just get this over before Levon goes ballistic.

I was 22 when this Last Waltz was done. 40 bloody years ago! Yikes! lol... Seriously, this was a song for the ages. Takes me right back to all the marches and the turmoil of the 60's..

Neil Diamond and Barry Manilow are the same person... whats amazingly interesting about this show is... Barry saved Danko's life... it had someone to do with a coke deal and well....nobody even got paid. But everyone lived!!! Thank you Barry ! .... something like that.

Neil only played at this gig because Robbie Robertson was producing his latest album.
@greypossum16 жыл бұрын
Levon Helm was one of those people who wondered why Neil was playing. "When I heard that Neil Diamond was going to play I asked, 'What the hell does Neil Diamond have to do with us?'" the drummer asked in his memoir. Diamond was invited after Robertson produced his album, Beautiful Noise; "Dry Your Eyes" was a number Robertson and Diamond wrote together. It was the only song he performed.
@greypossum16 жыл бұрын
He sang only one song and that wasn't in the spirit of the occasion. Yep. he did everyone a favour.
@greypossum16 жыл бұрын
Whether or not “Dry Your Eyes” is a good song is irrelevant; it’s a woefully inappropriate song for that concert. Diamond wrote this song with Robbie Robertson, who produced his Beautiful Noise album. In his memoir Testimony, Robertson explained that the song was inspired by "how many people felt after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr." It wasn't a celebration of Neils songwriting roots and certainly was not a reflection on anything The Band had ever performed. Neil Young, with Joni Mitchell on backing vocal, wowed them “Helpless,” Van Morrison slayed with “Caravan,” Muddy Waters destroyed with “Mannish Boy,” and so on. And the artists who did perform only one song, each chose a surefire classic: Dr. John brought the house down with “Such a Night,” Ronnie Hawkins’s “Who Do You Love?” turned the Winterland into the world’s largest backwoods bar, Paul Butterfield (dueting with Levon Helm) took everyone on the “Mystery Train.”
@zammo54 Жыл бұрын
why was it an inappropriate song for the occasion ?
@greypossum1 Жыл бұрын
@@zammo54 Neil used the occasion just to promote his new album. Nothing more, nothing less.

Neil...high as a kite during this performance...too bad he did this song instead of one of his many great tunes.
