Robbie Robertson wrote the song and he is the guitar player. He was kind of the leader of The Band, didn't really wanted to be, but he was more business minded than the other. Garth was very introverted, and the other 3 Richard, Levon and Rick were doing heroin and other drugs to be real effective. Robbie did drugs too, but not heroin and he never let it interfere with his music.

Robbie Robertson died the same day the fire hit Lahaina. A bad day all around! 4 out of the 5 members of the Band were from Canada. The drummer, Levon Helm, was the only one from the US, (Arkansas). The most iconic group ever out of Canada. The organist and sax player, Garth Hudson, is the only one still around.

Actually 3 great singers, Richard Manuel, Levon Helm and my favorite Rick Danko. Robbie wrote most of the songs, and was a great guitar player, he did not have a great voice, so just sang harmony. In his book he says when he wrote a song he had in mind who would sing it.

Rory you are right The Band is special. It starts with 3 of the best vocalists in rock and roll. Then you add on the fact that everyone of them is a top rate musician and pile on the fact that they played together since 1958 and didn't even become The Band until 1967 and you get perfection. One thing I think is amazing about them though is their drummer Levon Helm is considered by many musicians to be one of the top drummers in rock and roll and somehow he sings either background or lead vocals on pretty much every song.

I love all kinds of music. Jazz was my first love, grew up in Denmark as a teenager in the early to mid sixties by friend and I would take the bus or train into Copenhagen (30 miles away) to go to a jazz club, Montmatre several American jazz musicians played there, Dextor Gordon as he lived in Denmark. In the 1967 I came to the US as an au pair. that summer Beatles came out with Sgt. Pepper's, and I was then hooked on rock and roll (never lost my love of jazz though). When I first heard "Up on Cripple Creek" I became an instant fan of The Band. I think they are probably my favorite band, although The Doors would be close second. I hadn't listened to them in a long time, but last summer when I read Robbie's book, I started to listen again. I forgot how good they were, some songs I had forgotten, like this one, definitely on top of the list, also discovered some new one such as Arcadian Driftwood. Robbie was a genius, he is missed, as is all the Band members that have left us.

Catching up on your reactions. Missed this one. My guess Dylan liked these guys as a backup because they fill like crazy and never seem to get in the way of each other. Robertson wasn't a flashy guitarist but very tasteful in playing straight ahead melodic lines with the predominance on those harmonics which produced a very clear crispy sound. More often than not drummer Levon Helm took lead vocals but in this case Bass Rick Danko did and he has a more fragile vulnerable voice. Doesn't matter. both Danko and Helm's voices blended beautifully whomever did the lead. Garth looks like he's playing a curved soprano sax, which tends to have a mellower sound that harken back to older music. You might not ever read this, but thanks.
@LarryHelmeczy Жыл бұрын
I witnessed 2 reactions from you watching segments from probably the 2 best rock concert movies ever back to back: this one and Stop making Sense. Robertson was a master at that picking style that used harmonics. It's sparse and very bright. The only living member from the Band, Garth Hudson is heard here on what looks like a curved soprano sax. Great choice. It has a rounder softer sound than the straight soprano. Typically good reaction from you.

I listen to the band a lot. Have done since I was given a random copy of some of the tracks they recorded with Dylan........ The legendary Basement Tapes. And all this time I have found very little said about Rick Danko. If he's lucky he gets a namecheck and part time vocalist. And I think anyone can see from that footage taken from The Last Waltz, that he was no slouch when it came to playing bass and that when he sang he put it all out there for all the world. And this song just rips my heart out every time. Yes they were an incredible bunch o musicians. But I think we should be giving Rick a bit more attention. Sorry to rant! Rory! You are doing a great job. One of the very reactors who seems to listen to the music. Originally drawn to your site by Captain Beefheart and Bat Chain Puller. And your reaction to that. You seemed to have a very good grasp of what was going on. He was pretty fucking popular in England in the early 70's and he responded by touring a lot in Europe.l Saw him a good few times. He was..., Well I have no words !!!! Would you believe that he filled the Albert hall a couple of times without a support band. Anyway keep doing what your doing man.
