"The Band" was a Canadian-American rock band formed in Toronto, Ontario, in 1967. They started out as the "Hawks", the backing group for singer Ronnie Hawkins in 57-64. And in 65-67 they were the back up band for Bob Dylan. The Band's first solo album included three songs written or co-written by Dylan ("This Wheel's On Fire", "Tears Of Rage" & "I Shall Be Released"). Their most popular songs included "The Weight" & "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". But they had a lot of other great songs such as "King Harvest (Has Surely Come)", "The Shape I'm In", "Ophelia", "Up On Cripple Creek", "It Makes No Difference", "Life Is A Carnival" etc.

James you made me feel like I was sitting right next to you watching this. Nearly made me cry. You are a joy my dear, yes, you are. I find it sad though, that the younger generation are so surprised to see blended combinations of musicians as unusual or surprising. We took it for granted; music is music man, that's it. The amount of Melanin in someone's skin just did not make a difference to us. The music we were hearing every day felt like a gift. it made us dance and cry and feel..something. I am so glad I lived through that time, I wish great kids like you could have been there. At least you and other young reactors are feeling the vibe we did, the pure joy of hearing great music. Better late than never; I hope it has the same effect as it did on us. We felt united. That's not just me, right?

This performance is from "The Last Waltz", Martin Scorsese's documentary of The Band's farewell concert in 1978. Among the other participants along with the Staples Singers were: Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan and many others. How lucky are we that a great film director (at that time, early in his career) made this film so we can still enjoy these performances 44 years later?

Definitely watch The Last Waltz. The music is sublime. My son is a guitarist and singer. When he was in HS a group of band geeks decided to start playing these classics. They ended up winning the Battle of the bands at the Akron Agora as a group of awkward kids using the music from The Last Waltz. The Weight is my favorite they performed. A few years ago we went to see Mavis Staples in Cleveland as part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremonies. Even at 80 she was a firecracker with a powerful voice. It was an honor to be there in her presence with my children.
