Robbie Robertson really outdid himself when he wrote this sad, beautiful song. Rick Danko’s vocals are perfect for this song... his voice breaking, and sounding like pure heartache... Robertson’s lyrics, “and the dawn don’t rescue me no more” ring so true for anyone who’s ever experienced that kind of an absolute, crushing broken heart. Add to that, Robertson’s tasty, pinched note leads & fills, the gorgeous bottom layers of Garth’s keys & Rick’s bass lines, the lush, harmonies of Levon, Robbie, & Richard, and it’s about as good as anything can possibly get.... then it gets BETTER! as Garth steps to the front and lays down the most beautiful, soul-slaying sax, and I’m left absolutely gutted... in the best possible way. Sighhhh.

I think this song is one of the finest performances ever caught on film - a beautiful song anyway, but this performance takes it on to another level, it's almost spiritual. Just stunning, very human and profoundly moving.

Beautifully said. If this was 'classical' music, it would be called a threnody - a song of lamentation.

The guitar-sax duel at the end sends the performance into another realm of music. I've seen them in an another live performance and it doesn't come close to this!

Broken-hearted soul-loss defined, Rick's singing always leaves me in wonder, like how could he sing like this without dying on the spot, surpasses Robbie's superlative guitar and Garth's sax. I miss you guys - Blessings on you..............

Man - the pure emotion, the evident heartache and loss in that song always brings a tear to my eyes. Rick sang it the only way he knew how - with everything he had. Forty-five years after this album came out, I still listen to it. God bless you Rick, wherever you are.

This song is on my “it Moves me” list. Robbie knew what he was doing when he wrote this song for Rick to sing. Rick’s pain is projected in this beautiful song. I have never heard it without becoming emotional. The music and lyrics are hauntingly beautiful yet sad. I will forever love it!
@hannejeppesen18093 ай бұрын
Robbie wrote the song with Rick in mind, felt he would do it justice, and be able to sing it so it didn't sound like self pity. He was right, of course. Robbie also said of the song, "time supposedly heal all wounds, except sometimes it does not, this is one of those times. Definitely one of my favorite Band songs, if not the favorite.

Robbie said in an interview that supposedly time heal all wounds, except in some instances it doesn't, so he wrote this song. I agree with many hear, it is pure perfection, the lyrics, Rick's putting all his soul and feelings into it, as only Rick could. And of course Robbie and Garth at the end.

I once read of a record critic describing Joe Cocker's version of "A Whiter Shade of Pale" as a 'soul drenched waltz'. That's a pretty good descriptor for this 'sorta country' tune that's just dripping with soul. I doubt we will hear anything like it ever again.

Spot on, brother. That is ALL good. We don’t have bands like this anymore. R if we do, they don’t seem to be getting any love from the record labels. Why on Earth did the music industry decide the only money to be made was with crap like rap and Beyonce? I know... Bey has a loyal following, but... come on. The record companies are ignoring a HUGE fan base who #1 have money, and #2 WILL spend it if they give us great music like this! Maybe one day it’ll come back. I sincerely hope I live to see and hear it.

I hereby make a formal Public Apology to Terry Danko (Rick's Brother.) I met Terry here in Ottawa in 1998 (?) after he had played bass with the rejuvinated Ronnie Hawkin's Band (following Ronnie's recent major heart surgery in Peterborough.) So outside the club on a hot night Terry took a haul off his cigarette as I shook his hand and did the customary "meet-the-performer" small talk....but (I confess) that in my mind I was not really shaking hands with Terrry but, in fact, shaking hands with "Rick's DNA." A great pedigree. Your Brother really "had it", Terry. (Merry Christmas 2021.)
