Thanks for watching! How would you work around these issues in reprints? Or do you think the story could be reprinted without problems now?

I think if they did their research and reached out to community to fill in the blanks they could write new better story's not only with these locals but others as well. If oda of one piece can do it anyone can.

The Dalai Llama has actually come under fire in recent years, especially after Penn and Teller mentioned in their Bullshit episode "Holier then Thou" that he actually did some awful shit himself and was little bitter then the Chinese authorities he hated, he basically ran a third-world theocracy and got partial funding from the CIA and his hatred of China stemmed more from him losing access to his slave girls rather then out of any genuine desire for peace. So I think they could probably be reprinted now with minimal controversy.

I lived in Japan for a little while and I can say with some certainty that nobody there would care about Shinto gods being depicted in a comic book. They depict Shinto and Buddhist gods in their own manga and anime all the time. The only thing the Japanese get weird about is how their emperor is depicted. And I think with the Hiroshima thing, as long as the bombing wasn't glorified and the Japanese were shown as sympathetic victims, they'd be fine with it. I don't know what they'd think of Tattoo. As far as I know, real sumos aren't supposed to have tattoos. Only yakuza gangs have them. But I doubt they'd get offended, just eyeroll at the silliness.

The whole point of collections and omnibuses is to preserve the history of a franchise. Leaving out issues because they offend modern sensibilities defeats that purpose.

The Adventure series in my opinion is some of the best Turtle's story telling out there. I get the problems with reprinting them, but at the same time there's that little part of me that says screw it, put it back out there. These stories were so fun.

This is why I'm collecting the individual issues. I saw the TMNT Adventures reprints at a comic shop I visited a few days ago and decided to pass on them since I'm collecting the issues. At least I won't be bothered by modern day censorship and can get the complete series.

Glad I still have my original issues. I understand why they excluded them upon your explanation. But I’d hate to buy a book thinking I’m getting a complete compilation of all issues and be missing all that. I like the character Hot Head and liked getting the issues with him in it since unfortunately he never appeared in the toon. So sucks you wouldn’t have that appearance. And Tattoos toy was cool and I definitely liked his story in the comics better than the toon(big disappointment). So sucks you’d be missing him completely. And Katmandu was a cool new character & the bird guy. I like your suggestions on fixing some of the stuff so they could still be reprinted

The page regarding Splinter’s history of Islam can be edited and corrected making it less offensive. The bigger issue is China. That is what people in the comments do not seem to understand. It has nothing to do with “snowflakes” or “SJWs” trying to control what are exposed to it is about offending China.

I’d honestly prefer just printing it as is and adding an advisory message along with an explanation before it. I despise the idea of acting like things don’t exist or changing them due to there political incorrectness no matter what race, sex, gender, creed, etc. I think it’s just as harmful to pretend these mistakes were never made. I’d prefer we issue statements explaining how things may be wrong, and leave the content alone, bc acting like it never happened is as good as condoning it and taking away its historic value. That’s just my opinion though. But we don’t talk about Turtles for politics, we talk about turtles because we love these green dudes who carry ninja weapons so yk, Turtle Power!!!

I remember being a little kid and reading the Charlie Llama issue and not getting the real life stuff--or being aware it was real-life-inspired, but not knowing exactly what it was... "discussing," let's say. In my memory the art was photo-realistic and the story being slightly grounded in the real world (however incorrectly) made it feel like blending reality with pretend in a way that stuck in my mind. The sheer strangeness of seeing the Turtles interact with things like rebirth and religion (even one I didn't understand) is, in hindsight, a big influence on my own artistic output. ...but yeah, these stories are deeply cringe-inducing in the "oh, he was trying, but he definitely could've stood to try harder..." sense. I tried reading the collections a while back and had to tap out after one too many things made me go "oh boy, this was the exact wrong thing to do." Like, I'm glad he tried, but I feel the writer's attempts at multi-culturalism aged reeeal bad.
@jadedheartsz
@jadedheartsz Ай бұрын
yeah it reminds me of that Hanna Barbera show Rickety-Rocket, I know HB were trying for more black representation but damn that show has not aged well at all, there's a reason why the Plastic Man cartoon series was put on DVD separately with none of the RR segments(which it originally aired alongside).

Luckily I own Dutch translations of some of these issues. Any censorship is proof that bullying works; the fear that an unassuming comic featuring mutant turtles will cause an international incident or lose people money should not even be on anyone's mind. As for the second wrestling issue; is it because of Cryin' Houn' is faking being Mexican? It's ridiculous, but not more than what you discussed in the video.
@TheTurtleNexus
@TheTurtleNexus Жыл бұрын
As a Latino myself, I don't think Cryin' Houn' is an offensive stereotype. He is just a parody of Lucha Libre, and no one seemed to have a problem with the previous Intergalactic Wrestling issues (in fact, they are fan-favorites).

I have every single issue from #27 - #41 or #42, all purchased when they were released. I remember seeing a comment in the back of one issue (the fan mail section) where a mother had a problem with the issue “The Karma of Katmandu”, explaining how she was no longer allowing her children to buy any more TMNT comics! I was around 12 years old at the time, not really understanding why, the shock came from the distinct tone of the letter itself compared to the usual compliments and comments you would find in that section.
@TheTurtleNexus
@TheTurtleNexus Жыл бұрын
That happened all the time in those letter pages. People (mostly parents) were shocked by things like meditation and the existence of other religions. Goes to show that some parents couldn't tell the difference between religion and education.
@DrDreLite
@DrDreLite Жыл бұрын
It would have better if those parents could have seen them through the eyes of their children who read them. Like me, they probably didn’t understand where the controversy was, so it would have been better for their parents to teach them the differences between real life and the comics instead of trying to launch their own boycott campaigns. Too bad things have only gotten worse☹️

Charlie Llama Story: Change the dialogue, The villains won’t be the Chinese Government, The main villain will be a shapeshifter who wants the Llama’s power of reincarnation to be evil enough to rule the world in the next life. Islam Story: Make more accurate, erase Muhammad. In general: Put in a freaking disclaimer.

As a kid I was not a fan of all the religious material, or the Raphael and Ninjara romance. I just wanted to see the turtles fight mutant villains. In the end, I kind of prefer the issues not getting reprinted over being altered. Back issues are still available for those who want to read the stories.
@jeremyriley1238
@jeremyriley1238 Жыл бұрын
I have to agree, as altering the issues is never a good idea, especially since censorship is another way of saying prejudice, religion and real-world tragedies never existed, which is a dangerous message, as things like Hiroshima and the crimes committed in the name of religion should never be forgotten (even though I find is ironic that Archie Comics, a company that at the time made family-friendly comics, would even mention the Hiroshima bombing).

I think it is possible for them to reprint them. It's been a while since Charlie Hebdo and they are planning on releasing Omnibuses. However, the Mang-Thrasha character could be problematic. In the past DC cancelled reprints of golden age stories because of characters like him. So we'll have to wait and see what they do.

In my opinion there is a different matter here entirely, the Turtles and crew should not even be written into these kinds of stories. Dealing with Muslim and Chinese religious/political figures has absolutely nothing to do Turtle lore. It's honestly kind of a headscratcher. I know the Archie books went to some strange places, weirder even than the Mirage books at times but this just doesn't make any sense. Let's keep the TMNT a little more grounded. Hopping dimensions and fighting alien brain creatures in armored ninja suits is one thing, but they don't need to trek through the hills of Tibet on a religious pilgrimage. There are plenty of issues and episodes where the Turtles are meditating with Splinter and other Japanese culture elements have been sprinkled in. We don't need a TMNT comic book to poorly attempt to educate us on Asian and Middle Eastern religions and politics. It's not only in poor taste but bad form as well.
