M&B scratches an itch that no other game can. When I first played the original back in 09, it was such a visceral thrill to spear people on horseback. Now, in 2022, it's such a visceral thrill to spear people on horseback in a higher resolution! M&B and Kenshi are the two games that keep calling me back for hundreds of hours at a time Love the review Hal!
@Halcylion Жыл бұрын
I'm really bad at spearing people from horseback in Warband and previous M&Bs, but I'm a natural at it in Bannerlord. IMO, I think combat overall is leagues better in BL than WB, as well as sieges, armies, and well... everything related to battles.

@@Halcylion Alas, Bannerlord's combat is better only superficially. It undoubtedly looks a lot better than Warband's, but it doesn't play nearly as well when coming up against competent opposition (which, regrettably, bots are not) for a number of factors, such as the stance system, which adds a lot of inconsitency to the game, or putting crush through on weapons other than 2h mallets. I understand that most sp players will disagree, but I still wanted to provide a perspective shared by most of the old warband mp players.

Yes, the amount of ideas you can come up in this game is fantastic. One year I created a Christmas character by the name of Kristof Kringle, the renowned nord of north that would assist starving villages by gifting them needed grain or supplies and killing bands of looters with his patented "One horse open slay" maneuver (aka, lancing them from horseback) As always, enjoyed your video. CoD and Minecraft are oversaturated markets anyway, I doubt any amount of effort is enough to get you noticed. Besides, I've no passion for any of those games, and that would be reflected in whatever videos I'd put together. Anyway, happy new year and good luck with your video for the X series!

Don't know why I actually watched a review for this game after playing it for hundreds of hours and watching it on KZbin for even longer but I agree with almost every point you made. And this video was edited fantastically, with nice bits sprinkled in to keep the energy high. This game frustrates me a lot because it's a jack of all trades but master of none. Except maybe the combat, they absolutely nailed that part. But at the end of the day, there is literally no other game like it. So I love it for the unique experience it provides, even if a lot of its features are under baked. And the modding community should keep it fresh for years to come...

I don't think it nails combat. Has the ideas, but I still don't like having to look to the left or walking to the left to attack from the left. Plus, stabs suck at close quarters, which is ironic. Spears being deflected by skin is not quite adequate. I miss being able to have fast bursts of movement to dodge or hit harder too. I believe you get the idea. Still like the game a lot, though.

Freelancer mod is called "Serve as soldier" now and works with current version of the game. If it isn't in steam workshop you can search for it in nexus mods. Almost every thing you pointed out as flaws is corrected by mods, like diplomacy (allows to make alliances and non attack pacts among other features), improved garrisons, pacemaker (allow to make years and days longer or shorter), RBM (improves AI fighting, tournaments..) and many others including armoury and weaponry addition. It's a bit overwhelming but you can improve the game vastly. Cheers from a new subscriber!

It's great that you point out issues in game as well. From me - conquering town/castle should take much more time and be something big. You know, it's great to have a war but if every war makes you gain 2/3 cities and wars are constant it makes no sense at all. Some diplomatic actions (alliance, no-agression pacts, anything) would be great. Some war preparation as well. Many things could be changed
@Centrioless Жыл бұрын
Im curious.. whats the point of diplomacy when the game revolves in war and war only
@nottodaymate6607 Жыл бұрын
@@Centrioless building up armies, recruit clans, being able to fight 1 war at the time, making kids, bringing 200 more soldiers to garrison castle, holding some war council. That's only few of them. For example as empire I couldnt do WC because I was fighting every kingdom at the same time after conquering all empire cities. Fighting every one at once is broken.
@Centrioless Жыл бұрын
@@nottodaymate6607 maybe i should reword it better. Whats the point of diplomacy if you're still just controling one unit? In order for diplomacy to work "properly", the game needs to be built up from the ground up. You will need to have a total control of your economy, your whole armies, etc. Not to mention, theres no end game goal beside map conquest. No economic goal (like x series for example), or building a wonder/science goal (like aoe or civilization). Even games like total war has very limited diplomacy options. It baffles me how ppl want crusader kings diplomacy in m&b. In ck, war (the actual content of m&b) is a highly undesirable outcome. Besides, most things that you mentioned can be alr done in the game. It feelssss like many of the complaints come from the end game scenario (the whole conspiracy thing), which i agree they need to work on that (altho trchnically its no different from end game scenario in other games).

To claim that Bannerlord is "modder friendly" is a slap in the face to the modding community. There has been almost NO support for modding from the devs and EVERY patch they do (and they patch A LOT) destroys 80% of all mods. so MANY mods are dead because the modders could not update them every 2 weeks because another stupid update dropped. So many modders left for that exact reason, their entire work being destroyed by another pointless update that adds almost nothing. The only reason the game still has mods is because the vanilla is bad and boring and because some modders are just stubborn or have developed superior tools to what the devs have. Its mainly people from mount and blade 1 who just are used to modding and love the genre. If bannerlord was their first game, no one would mod it, because of have f**** up it is to do so. The community has to create EVERYTHING themselves, the modding tools, the unpackers, the mod managers, the mods, there is ZERO support from the devs, there isnt even a modding menu in the freaking game, so wtf are you talking about being modding friendly??? Bannerlord is one the most toxic games when it comes to modding, the devs hate modders.

I strongly agree with your assessment of diplomacy, especially in regards to truces and tribute. I've had campaigns ruined by every kingdom declaring war on me and demanding tribute, and even if I fight them to the point where I don't pay them anything they immediately redeclare war with their newly freed nobility and demand ridiculous level of tribute. It also wouldn't be so bad if the tribute only applied to the king, but it applies to my vassals as well, so the main way of getting out of the tribute death spiral, making a large army via vassals so they leave you alone, is impossible as the vassals are broke and can't afford armies. You can't even donate money to you vassals to help dig them out of the hole tribute put them in, and like any form of peace outside tribute, or just the presence of truces would eliminate all these issues.

In the " to battle" part where you discuss tactics... they can matter from time to time. One time I was outnumbered with 500 soldiers against 1k soldiers of the enemy. I used a simple formation of 2 shield walls, with the archers and crossbowmen on the back and 2 cones of rides capable of flanking the enemy... though I sufered heavy casualties... the enemies lost it all, allowing myself to retreat, put the wounded soldiers in the garrison, imprisson the lords, pick up garrisoned troops and use that momentum to snatch a castle and a town.

Augh, so frustrating! The game has a lot of new features in it that I really want, but it's lacking stuff that Warband has that I also consider really important. Last I checked, the game was considered to have a significant lack of content. It's so close to being something that I'd instantly buy, but I'm not sure it's quite there yet. I keep thinking about my campaign in Warband, and of trying to find ways to make the character's story of what's happening in the game world more clear to the player. Trying to figure out how to write that logic out in clear words that might translate to being able to make some sort of mod. Are new Warband mods even a thing? This was an incredible video essay, and I loved every minute of it. I'm looking forward to checking out the rest of your channel.

With the advancements in AI over the last 5 years, I am really excited for Mount and Blade 3. Bannerlord was originally advertised as a deep simulation of lords all with their own motives vying for power that would react to each other and the player's actions in varying ways depending on their personality. In reality, every single lord may as well be the same, they barely even react to anything, obviously this is excusable since the technology just wasn't there, but they really shouldn't have overpromised. But Mount and Blade 3 will have access to all the latest advancements in technology, everything from AI generated dialogue based on the context of your game and your actions, to novel strategies depending on all the variables of each battle, and AI that can actually participate in diplomacy making strategic marriages and making political decisions to gain more influence by setting themselves goals to get certain titles, fiefs or friendships. The only thing that breaks my heart is the fact I'm not healthy enough to see the 2030s, maybe I'll leave £300 to my nephew with explicit instructions to buy Mount and Blade 3 when it releases, he's only just started school, so he should have graduated from university by the time it releases in early access, which will put him right around retirement age by the time it launches out of early access.

You can somewhat separate troops in the deployment phase, by selecting soldiers with shields in one group and those without shields in another. It's not a perfect way to handle your army composition, but it's good enough for separating shock troops from shieldmen and archers from crossbowmen. With that said, I'd rather have the system from the Early Access version of Bannerlord where I get to put troops into whatever group I want from the party management menu.

No your defintly right about the story line. I mean who doesn't like painstakingly running down lords and ladies to ask them about a battle that you don't care about. That overall has little impact to anything. With your reward being a juicy job well done.

This is NOT a sandbox game. You can not create, alter or destroy elements of the game (aside from lives and factions), or creatively manipulate other than the specific way it was meant to be played.

On the economy bit, there was a bug that allowed you to cheese training up charm as a merc while gaining obnoxious amounts of influence that then the faction would have to pay out, this would bankrupt the faction and they where no longer able to recruit troops or raise armies and would crumble. I just remember even though it was a bug just being really impressed by the hidden economy in the game because it was actually real, the game wasnt just gifting troops to the lords cuz reasons and game mechanics to create the perception of them having to use the same economic system as you. No the game actually uses the same economic system as the player.
@Halcylion Жыл бұрын
There were a lot of hidden mechanics that added a lot of depth to the game, despite not being bugs or exploits... but got banned nonetheless, because sometimes, the developers don't want us to have fun.
@waldo2543 Жыл бұрын
@@Halcylion I agree, it was fun, though im not losing sleep over that it got patched out. I am more saying, in a really long way, that bug showed off the depth to economy.

In my current play through I executed the leaders of the Sturgians, Khusuits, and W.E. For the S.E. With a few dozen nobles of each faction. I’m not doing a genocide. I’m just solving a future problem the old fashioned way. 😊

Really like that you tested this as a game without mods. I hear some people say "but this game has good mods, so its good", but if a game costs 50 bucks i at least await that its good and not good because of mods. Either way, thank you for this Review. Im really looking forward to stuff like smithing, the skill trees, siege weapons and the option to keep on playing as offspring after getting defeated. Thats like the Main "Features" i always heard, when comparing to warband. But never was sure if this is worth 50 Bucks, to me. Also hearing your Ideas to improve Bannerlord - i imagine how cool it would be if you could somehow work together with some modders to make these ideas come true. PS: Im intrigued to know, what price you would recommend this game for at its current state? Im still unsure if the 35 Bucks are good enough or if i should stick with Warband till Bannerlord, gets way cheaper.
@Halcylion Жыл бұрын
I doubt the game is going to go cheaper than 35$ any time soon, seeing how it had its official launch a couple months ago... In 2 years from now, maybe. Honestly, I'm enjoying Bannerlord a lot more than Warband. Better combat, more tactical options, prettier graphics, a siege system that doesn't give you a brain aneurysm, a fully-simulated economy, and a lot more. The game may lack a lot of features that Warband has, but it has a more solid foundation. Warband is like an old shack built out of sticks, branches and rope... may fall apart at any time, but people like it because it has a lot of decorations (feasts, marriage, companion interactions and other things), while Bannerlord is like a fully built stone house whose rooms are almost completely empty. However, I fully believe that if the developers want to, they can turn Bannerlord into something much, much greater than Warband ever was. We've already seen what is possible with mods. Anyway, comment's getting long and I have work to do, so I may make a proper video on this subject.

@@Halcylion Thank you for this answer. Yeah, i hope that the devs keep on working on this game and not just moving on and wait till modders make stuff.

Currently doing a great unifier play through where I married the queens daughter and are her number one general waiting for her to croak and for me to be elected king and shrewdly making sure only her and my cities are prosperous.fighting the urge to be a chaotic despot and behead every single prisoner. I will say the western empire (the purple guys) really get under my skin, I’ve captured phadon a million times and the amount of restraints it’s taken to not execute him is tremendous. Next play through ima be the executioner lmao
