Samuel Sharpe was a preacher at the Baptist church and his religious beliefs were some of the inciting factors of the initial strike.

Sam sharpe was a Baptist preacher, and many pro slavery people thought the war was triggered by the anti slavery preachings of the baptists. It's aldo known as the Christmas Rebellion since it began on Christmas
@Zaphod77116 күн бұрын
Baptist theology states that all people have the opportunity to accept Christ as their savior and to become the "elect" or chosen people of God. The practical ramifications of this are twofold: 1. Becoming a Christian must be a choice made by the believer, which means that Baptism is a public statement of faith that each Baptist makes to follow Christ even to death. 2. Since all people are equally valuable to God, it creates an incentive for slave-owning Baptists to reconsider the institution of slavery. This also played a role in the United States abolitionist movement. In other words, if each person has equal opportunity to choose Christ (including Baptism, communion, etc.) to be their new master, then the question must be asked what right does any man have to own another soul? The question was not universally answered the same way among Baptists, but it was Baptist theology that prompted them to even question the institution of slavery at all in the first place. Once the Baptist Churches began to discuss the question, the other Christian denominations began to ask it as well. However, the Baptists themselves owe some of their ideas to the Moravians, the Anabaptists, and an ancient Church father named Cyril of Jerusalem.

These obscure wars usually have funny name that were given by historian huh.
@mildlyinfuriatedbird255719 күн бұрын
It's called the Baptist war due to the fact that Sam sharpe, a slave with freedom of movement, was an honorary deacon for the Baptist church Of Jamaica. The Baptists were also believed to have spread revolutionary sentiment among the enslaved people who joined the revolt. The baptists were only really anti-slavery though, and hadn't been found to be triggering the war. In Jamaica, we also call it the Christmas Rebellion since the non revolt protest began around Christmas

One of the reason to end slavery in 19th century. First was of course rebellion in Haiti. Simple dealing with rebellions were far more costly than maintaining slavery.
