Too many people are criticizing the actress for not showing enough emotion, as if they completely forgot that Helaena's basically on the spectrum, and an extremely scary moment like this turned her mute (common with some neurodivergent people when overwhelmed). She was acting in pure shock and instinct, which was getting her surviving child far away from the danger as possible.

Man the books was way worse cuz they made her choose while they were awake. It was very messed up. But the HBO did a very good job with this. I get others are like "they ruined blood n cheese." I feel so bad for Helaena. It was either choose one child or they both die alongside herself. What else was she supposed to do? The only thing she could do was take her surviving child while the two were distracted and get out of there as fast as she could. Even though it didn’t look like it, I could tell that she 100% felt emotion and sadness. She was just in shock from the horrifying moment that happened before her eyes. And she didn’t even care that her mother was with Criston. She was too much in shock.

She had to walk pretty far to Alicent's room, and didn't pass a single guard. WTF. Cole was too busy with his side gig to do his actual main job. Unforgiveable lapse in security.

Wow I’ve been here since the original showing of GOT 10years ago and I just love seeing how the channel has grown. I came here as a GOT fan and because the bar I worked at and loved, had just been knocked down for a bypass to be built and Burlington bar just had the same vibe and honestly the same looking customers, so I felt right at home straight away!!! I’ve been coming back ever since. Watching Angel go through GOT is a pleasure I didn’t know I needed either, so thank you for that. I don’t agree with others that they should have shown the actual act as I don’t think it was necessary and could have been done off screen like how they did it here. But I do think they should have had Helaena at least offer herself in place of her kids and realizing that there was absolutely no choice. Maybe draw it out more or have her be more emotional in that moment? I also think that there should have been a choice between two sons like in the book. They changed it here and I felt like a big part of what is the start of Helaena’s trauma and mental instability is knowing that the son that is alive is the one she chose for death. As a mother, she had a hard time looking at him after that, knowing she selected him for death over his brother. Any mother would go crazy over that. In the show, it seems less brutal because they were going after the son no matter what. Either all of them would be dead or just the son, so she chose the option that would allow her and her daughter to escape.

I think the fault lies in the absence of Maelor. The choice between which son should be killed was a Real, a Grave choice. Pointing out towards the boy when they could anyway have checked for genitals in a second was pointless, dumb even. Also the scene was too short to create any tension. Halaena didn't even look that freaked out.
