The BAR is a gun designed for a purpose that never really had a chance to manifest in WWI and it was kept in action for so long that it was placed into a role that it wasn't optimized for that it led to people looking down on the design. Regardless it was the first gun that I fell in love with playing the original Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. It's big, loud, heavy, and a bit impractical these days but it has a charm that I can't accurately put into words.

Damn it, now I know why I got my times tables wrong, I always thought 5 x 5 was 55. Also while I reckon the browning was better than the type 11, you have to give props to the Madsen light machine gun. Considering it had a minimum 25 round magazine, all the way up to 40, was only 2 pounds heavier, could double as a medium machine gun in a pinch, and was the first ever light machine gun produced. It came out in 1902! Beating the browning by 16 years and predating ww1 by over a decade!

My grandfather carried a bar as a replacement in the battle of the bulge. He told me he was taught in basic that you could shove 21 rounds in magazine. He stated he found out very quickly under fire that this caused an instant jam. He was always upset over that, never would explain more.

He wouldn't be such a fan of the BAR if he'd ever had to carry it. The weapon and ammo were very heavy and cumbersome. One of the funniest imagines I have from Vietnam, is a little 90 lb. 4' 10" RVN soldier firing a BAR. Every time he pulled the trigger he went backwards about 3 feet until he finally tripped and went ass over tea kettle.

Grandfather, who never allowed us to call him that, only “C.T.” was a 26 year old private in WWII. According to him, everyone called him the old man. And, yes, he was a BAR man. Mainly because every time he got promoted he did something to get demoted. If the stories are true, he made PFC four times. No clue if that’s true, but I don’t even care. The stories he told! Having now served 26 years and counting his stories add up. Good ole Joe, or in my case C.T. RIP.

What branch was he in and what part of the war was that? Privates/junior enlisted in their late 20s and 30s was very common in WW2, especially in the US Army, as the draft went up to around 40. The Marines were younger on average. Eugene Sledge (USMC WW2) in his book 'With the Old Breed' comments on how the Army infantrymen he worked with in the Peleliu battle in the Pacific were older men, whereas most Marines were 18-24. The average age was young later in the war as the older guys were replaced through promotion/attrition/being rotated out and fresh 18 y/os were being drafted. WW1 and WW2 were kind of unusual in that it wasn't uncommon for there to be 40-year-old privates and guys only in their mid-20s leading battalions and 30-year-olds leading regiments (or higher).

Prior to USN Service, I was in USMC 1963-69 and had familiarization training on the BAR and others like the M30. I preferred the BAR over all the weaps including my TO M14. Smooth action and easy to get into a rhythm and, imo, gave birth to the reason of the phrase, "rock and roll" as it relates to firing a weap. Excellent weapon with only draw back, imo, is the weight of having to carry plenty of extra, preloaded mags so as to keep up with a fast rate of 🔥 .

The operating system is still in service. Flip over the locking link of an M240. The bolt lock goes down onto a block in the middle of the receiver of an M240. The BAR locks up to the hump on the top of the receiver. The M240 and M240C still have the washers in the buffer like the BAR. I recall the bipod weighed over 3 pounds. Leaving the bipod behind brings the BAR weight down to 16 pounds.

A cousin, from the maternal side of the family shrub, was armed with a BAR from D-Day to VE Day. He loved that old rifle but did have one complaint about it. Apparently German MG-42/43gunners HATED BAR teams and would make it a point to concentrate their fire on such teams. Al felt that he and his assistant gunner/ammo monkey had one advantage over the German gunners because magazines could be changed out faster than belts. When called back to active duty for the Korean War Al was again armed with a BAR and toted it from 1952 till he mustered out for the last time in 1956.

It’s interesting hearing about the US military doctrine you talked about. From what I read, the US army command figured the whole squad having semi auto rifles in the M1 Garand along with a BAR would be enough to achieve fire supremacy over the Germans with their bolt action rifles and an MG-34s or MG-42s. I heard they were wrong and that Americans were poorly outgunned vs German squads fitted with those rapid firing guns. Then again, their entire squad tactics were based around the machine gun, and like you said the Americans focused on the individual soldier more.

TBH, that "nub" of a protrusion behind the trigger on the original BAR was what passed for a pistol grip on a rifle back in the day. Look at the '03 Springfield's straight stock, etc. The new one just made it a "modern day version" aka a real pistol-type grip.

Just picked up a HCAR. it's internals are identical to the m1918 A2. The composite grip kinda sucks and moves around, and the M4 stock is so light it makes the gun very forward heavy and unbalanced. It's a great rifle, and the machine work is some of the best I've seen. Very high quality rifle, and a ton fun to shoot.

Legend has it that, if you use the word "Clip" correctly 3 times in one sentence, you will summon a CWO5 2311, Ammo Tech. He'll just complain that the crates aren't organized, but still, cool legend. 😎

You should do a comparison of the BAR with the Bren Gun. R. Lee Ermey demonstarted both weapons on his show a few years ago. God rest his badass soul.

The Bren gun would win every time, but only because of its larger magazine capacity.

@@sgtmayhem7567 well, it was much quicker to reload, superior as it was a true light machine gun whereas the BAR is a fire support weapon, the Bren has more flexibility the BAR lacks. The RoF was higher than the BAR, had a quick-change barrel which an experienced gunner could change in a second or less. 30 round magazine with integral bipod and options for tripod and vehicle mountings, better accuracy, and was still in service till 2006, and the Indian Army having phased it out of milotary service in 2012

It was disapionting, though not unexpected; when i found out it was an re-enactment put on the the higher ups that obviously have to lead from the rear. This is not a condembation as you cannot have the leaders killed. Was pleased though that they did not get there greedy hands on the origanal flag though.

@ 00:52 -- Don't know how it was done in the Army, but the Marines issued the BAR to the shortest man in the squad. Why? That determines the rate of advance: the other members of the squad can't advance any faster than their slowest member. [Per my dad, Korea '51.]

Maybe the HCAR is closer to the later verison of the BAR, such as the Wz1928 used by Poland. I'm assuming they are refereing to the operating system being similar to the BAR.

That 6' height rule is definitely BS. My Great-Uncle, who was a replacement Ranger right after D-Day was the BAR man for his squad. At 5'7" and 140 lbs. or so, I laughed at the thought of this. But thought, "Damn, dude definitely had to me one wiry son of a gun!"
