The Barbie diaries I feel is showing us who Barbara was before she was BARBIE, I feel like the animation makes sense bc it isn’t the best and it’s not glamorous which represents Barbie before she got confident in herself and stopped caring about what others think of her. So the Barbie diaries is basically a prequel to all of Barbie movies, and to Barbie herself

I love that the prominent song in the movie “Invisible” was composed and sung by none other than pre-fame Kesha (though it’s credited to Skye Sweetnam), as “Kesha Sebert.” Also there’s something virtually identical to Barbie’s “highlighter lipgloss” containers that actually exist now. I think this movie caught some flack because of its animation style & it’s unintentional uncanny valley. While the *early* Barbie CGI films aren’t usually masterpieces in character design, this movie especially stands out as this. All the human characters have flat hair textures & expressions that range from dull surprise to unintentionally creepy. Thank you for noting this film wasn’t produced by the usual team at Mainframe Entertainment (I think that partially explains it). In addition to being the last Barbie movie released by Lionsgate before Mattel switched to Universal for distribution, this was animated by Curious Pictures (of Codename: Kids Next Door, Sheep in the Big City, and other shows), who also handled the My Scene films & PollyWorld for Mattel. The film hasn’t officially been released on home media since the original release in 2006. Unlike all other Barbie movies, Universal never re-released it, likely stemming from either the Uncanny Valley animation having aged poorly since then, or music licensing issues.

I always knew this movie was weird and my brain saw it as a bootleg barbie movie perhaps BUT it was my FAVOURITE. Idk if anyone else lived this but I used to get all my barbie/bratz DVDs from my mums work friend cus he would burn them onto discs with shitty pixelated art and it was a mood. That used to be my very favourite when I was growing up. At that time it was perfect because I was feeling "to old" for princesses and magic, but still playing with barbies. I loved it. At that time i was also playing sims 2 and i was thinking "oh how cool would it be if the sims looked like that movie" when I watched it when I was 17 with my little cousin and she was like "wooow it is how the animation looked like when you were young, yuck.."
