I love this machine. Requires a bit of practice, but with the automatic grind and extraction as well as the pressure gauge it takes away a lot of the guess work. Once you've figured out the correct grind size and time you don't even need to think about it (unless you charge coffee bean). The only thing I've struggled with is texturing the milk perfectly, but even that has improved dramatically with practice. The trick is to do as shown in this video and get the steam up to temperature and pressure before quickly shutting it off, placing in the milk and turning it on again. Listen to the sound of the steam wand, you want gentle hissing until you've reached the desired amount of foam (note the height of the milk - always fill to the v initially) then dip the wand in slightly lower until the milk reaches temperature. I've had consistency and quality that rivals my favourite cafes.

The reason I purchased it was after researching it, and looking at KZbin reviews, it appeared to be a great value for the money. Plus, the Associate at Bed Bath and Beyond has used it and was able to explain the differences between machines and was also able to show me how to use this machine. I can't wait to try it. By the way, I stopped purchasing major appliances at places other than BB&B, Costco and SAMS Club. Their return policy is fantastic and never a question.

Thanks for posting this video. I am a proud owner of this BES 870XL. It has worked flawlessly up until recently. Here is what's going on. I have found that setting the coarseness of my grind at the number 5 setting, my espressos have been coming out perfectly. Pulling the shots has been taking from between 25 seconds and 30 seconds with the pressure between 8.5 and 9.5 bars or well within the grey area. In fact I usually can keep the needle nearly dead center of the grey area the way I have everything set. Lately however, my shots have been barely coming out of the portafilter with the pressure shooting to about the second grey line outside the solid grey area on the pressure gauge. Naturally I decided to set the grind to a coarser setting and have gone all the way up to the number 9 setting with little or no noticeable difference. I then decided to do a lighter tamp which did help somewhat but only with the grind set at number 9. I then pulled the shower head out and made sure it was clean on the top and bottom sides. By the way, I am using filtered water, I regularly perform the back-flush procedure as needed as per the instructions, I replace the water filter every 2 months as per the instructions and I descale with white vinegar once per month as per the instructions. I am at a loss here. I understand ambient temperature and barometric pressure can make it necessary to adjust the grind but this all seems to have happened overnight. One would also expect that if this is weather related that the need to change the settings would fluctuate but I have had the grind set at number 9 now for a full week while doing a lighter tamp than I have been in the past. I have not changed the beans I am using either. By the way, I have just performed an advanced cleaning of the grind burs, grind fan and chute. That hasn't helped either. Could it be that for some reason my grinder just suddenly started to grind finer on it's own? Can anyone tell me what's going on here? Is this normal?

@vafi19799 жыл бұрын
There is always a good reason when something is cheaper than its rivals. $600 for a combo grinder and espresso machine that has a built-in PID is definitely a steal. BUT you are really paying much more for its horrible durability, especially, combined with lack of responsibility from Breville. Initially, the grinder gave me a good range of fine coffee for my espresso and the espresso machine brewed perfect shots of espresso. In less than 6 months the grinder started to slip and the grind size became significantly course despite regular cleaning and maintenance. I followed instructions of the manual and the technician on the phone to clean the whole burr groups; however, I still do not get a fine grind unless I set it at the finest and even then it is not always consistent. The espresso machine still works fine. I called Breville again and they mentioned that my grinder needs to be serviced but they voided my warranty since I had not purchased the machine from their “AUTHORIZED RETAILER”. Basically, they are not taking responsibility for a machine that malfunctions only after less than 6 months. I already spent enough for my espresso equipment for now so I need to wait longer for an upgrade which is certainly NOT a Breville. My next purchase is definitely going to be from a company with a better durability and responsibility

Price does not equal reliability. I've purchased cheap things, cheaply made, and they last forever. I've purchased hellishly expensive things that fell apart within a year. Case in point, a $400 KitchenAid Proline 4 slice toaster. Who pays $400 for a toaster? A moron, that's who, but I digress. The bakelite knobs both broke after about a year, then one side of the toaster completely failed. The circuit board was hooped. It was eventually recalled for a fire hazard defect. I got a new equivalent model, for free, it's still in the box after 3 years as I'm using another toaster that I paid $12 for.
@kashmirpandit6 жыл бұрын
I agree with you that price has nothing to do with durability and with the quality. In the year 1990 I purchased a microwave for $150 from K Mart. It has been 28 years since, it is still working while other few microwaves from reputable brands came and died in 5 years in our household. Today I bought this coffee machine, has to see how it goes....

Classic machine. They’re still selling it seven years later. I wonder how many they’ve sold. Personally, I think they should have upgraded it with the new Thermojet heating system and called it the Barista Express 2....continue with a winner. The Barista Pro, which I think they hoped would replace this, is really clunky looking. They could have upgraded the design of Barista Epress slightly and been good to go for another 10 years. Now they’re still selling a very popular machine, but it’s got the old and slow heating system. Customers aren’t quite getting the machine it could easily be.

Only bad thing i have found from that machine is that goes to stand by very quick and the machine will never warm up properly ! One of the very important things to make good coffee is that any component of the machine need to be at perfect temperature ! With that machine is very hard as it goes to stand by very quick ! You will realise that when you do like 5 coffees in a raw , you'll see that the 5th coffee is the best as the machine have warmed up properly !

Is this normal or might it be a problem? An other question that I have: Is it possible to change the brew temperature? Thank you in advanced. Happy new Year.

Taller bean hopper with angled walls and more capacity, the hot water spout, the drip tray looks way different (860 looks more like a cooling rack with parallel bars), there's is PID control which is a fancy way of saying it has a control system that quickly hones in on the correct temperature using sensors in a feedback loop, and there's a way to program the extraction temperature (not in 860). Source: I have owned the 860.

I press and hold the button about 7 sec and then let go count to 24 and then stop. If I use the default doible espresso shot the coffee beans have to be really really fresh brewed and tightly packed (the blade doesn't help)

The bes870 has a thermocoil with more thermal mass for better thermal stability. The hopper is also bigger, and I believe the grinder is calibrated finer by default.

Two suggestions: 1.) Try changing the settings on the grinder to make the grind finer. 2.) Try tamping in layers. For example, set the grind amount to a single shot. Tamp this down and then manual add enough to fill the rest of the portafilter.
@lancer8765 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your recommendation! First I had extract espresso using a level 9 of grinder but I hadn't realised how many times I had used the tamp. Nice machine! I'm a proud owner of Breville 870. By the way, the pressure of my machine is to low. It is on the edge of the low gray line. I don't know how to deal with it. Can you give me any tips for it?
@AlexJ668 жыл бұрын
+Fiona Hyun I have found the pressure will be too low if you have the coffee grounds too coarse, or haven't tamped hard enough. The pressure is built up by the flow of the water through the coffee grounds, so if they are too coarse or not tamped hard enough the water flows through too quickly and doesn't build up the pressure. I find the grind setting might need to be altered depending on the beans, and sometimes even between bags of the same beans. Hope this helps, try some experimenting with some old cheap beans if you have them, and see how the grind setting and tamping pressure affects the gauge pressure :-)

Thanks. That's what everybody is saying. I can change one machine, keeping the other. Also, the separete grinder has a wider grind range. That's the reason I ask the advantage of having the built-in unity. There is none, besides a bit of space "economy", which does not matter to me.

Does the portafilter take coffee for a triple espresso dose? Or the maximum it can hold is the double dose?
@JackRockliffe11 жыл бұрын
Having a dual boiler means that you can steam your milk while your espresso extracts, due to the two different heating mechanisms.
@VincentMichael2076 жыл бұрын
I love my Breville ® Barista Espresso Machine, but NEVER leave fresh brewed espresso sitting like that for so long without mixing it with some milk or hot water. Since this isn't a dual boiler machine I recommend steaming your milk first so that you can pour your milk into the espresso as fast as possible, otherwise it gets super bitter just sitting there

Here's how I get good microfoam from mine, starting with a cold pitcher and cold milk up to base of spout: 1: Turn on the steam wand first (without milk) for about 20 seconds to get the steam really pumping. 2: Super quickly switch the steam off while putting the wand in the milk, and twist it back on 3: Set tip not even 1/2" below tip of milk, you should hear tiny air spurts every few seconds if depth is right 4: After milk is warm (85F) lower the wand about an inch below just to keep the milk whirling in the pitcher until 145 degrees. (I like mine on the cool side) Then just tap out an air bubbles from the pitcher and swirl a little to get the wet paint glossiness. Milk should be really swirling like a vortex the whole time if you've got the wand angled correctly.

Just got this machine but having a little issue with the steaming. Apparently just by putting the knob to the steam sign does nothing to prepare the steam until I give it another slight push as though there is a trigger switch at the end to start the preparation of steaming. Is this normal as I view all videos, all you guys did was just switch the knob over. Please let me know if my machine is defective. I got it like only 3 days back. Thanks.

To add, the steam light only starts blinking when I give the knob an extra flick. Apppreciate it if someone from Breville can verify this.

I got the same exact machine earlier today and the steam takes a few seconds to start after I turn the the knob. Perhaps you're not giving it enough time, and it's bound to start with or without that second push? Try turning the knob once and waiting. If it doesn't start at all, then it's definitely defective.

jacqueline sandoval Thanks for contributing. Well I don't know if all 870's the same but mine happened to be that if I didn't turn it with a little extra energy to the steam symbol, it is as though the trigger is not engaged. would like to know where the grind size was set at!!!!

Different beans need different grind sizes. Even beans from the same bag can need finer grind adjustments as they get older and more dried out.

Breville should make this machine capable to brew and steam at the same time. then you will have a winner. think about that!

dual boiler machines are complex and more expensive :) It would double in price at least if it was!

It seems like you're brewing espresso only 15-16 sec. is that ok?

video is edited. 1 cup lasts 30 secs and 2 cups 60 seconds. manual for any amount of time you like!
@Lukasito195 жыл бұрын
@@jimbosaul3996 2 cup 60 sec? This is unreal, and if so, it would result in super overextracted espresso. One or 2 cups, both should take ~30sec, the only difference is portafilter size.
@jimbosaul39965 жыл бұрын
@@Lukasito19 yeah sorry i think your right. it wouldn't be above 30secs. i thought i heard him say it in another video, but im wrong. i only make single shot cups and it runs 30 secs on auto, i restrict it tho to 20 secs. dont use the 2 cups. so not so sure, just thougt he said that, but cant be. it would be horrible at 60secs. sorry about that

What is the difference between this and the Dual Boiler?

Definitely has to be your grind size and coffee type. If it's super fine you aren't tamping hard enough.

I heard that you can't use a bottomless portafilter with this machine 'cause it doesn't fit. Is that true?

Can we use the builtin grinder to grind beans for french press?
@zorlanv9 жыл бұрын
You can grind for any brewing method (just adjust the grind accordingly), but it'll be awkward to get the ground coffee out as the grinder is activated by inserting the filter handle.
