That's the nice thing about them 'ol Hondas, especially the 4 strokes is they're pretty much unchanged through the 1990's, mostly the smaller displacement bikes like that. You could probably swap the latest XR100 motor to that Frame, and it'd bolt right up...

Any year xr80 or 100 will bolt in all the way till they stopped making them as the crf100. With a little time with a file to make the woodruff key fit you can even retrofit the later model CDI ignition.

Yes. It'll bolt right in. They didn't change the mounts from the 70s with the XR75 all the way to the end of the crf100. I have a 2000 xr100 motor in a 79 xl75.

I've got a frankenstein bike that has xl100 cases, xr80 head, TB120 kit, xr80 transmission, pitbike outer rotor kit, and is shoehorned into a cr80 chassis. The japanese really have a corner on the hopup market for them. Takegawa, kitaco and rev-up all have big valve heads, short stroke big bore kits to stay at 100cc to big bore strokers that are 145cc, 5 disc clutches, 6 speeds, just about the sky is the limit on what you can do. The short stroke kit from kitaco is supposed to make around 14hp at 14krpm.

Rings look like they are kind of stuck, but running it will free them up. 4 strokes won't have air leaks at the crank seal, only oil. It cleaned right up when you got it to rev out off choke, no smoke noticed in the video. Thanks for the cool video, Joe!

Air leak behind rotor? That would be an oil leak. It’s not a 2 stroke! More than likely leak is around carb manifold, either on carb or engine side. Timing and valve clearances would help too…

Hey bud, I am a new subscriber. I really like your Channel, especially when you work on Vintage dirt bikes. When I was a kid I had a brand new 1979 Suzuki DS 100. I had so much fun on that thing! As popular as KZbin is, I have never seen a vintage Suzuki ds100 on anyone's channel... . If you Google that model it pops up . It was like the only dirt bike of that time. With a square headlight . I was wondering if you have ever seen one ? There is nothing like the sound of an old 2 stroke dirt bike. I'm 55 years old now but you never outgrow having fun with old dirt bikes LOL! I live in Connecticut and I'm looking for a 70s Enduro that I can tinker on. Really nice old bikes are increasing in value so hopefully I can find something decent to play with. Thanks for the good content, you're teaching this old guy a thing or two. LOL

2 vintage you should try using shell rotella since you always go through so much oil. They make it in 10w30 and of course 15w40. The cool thing is its cheaper than the motorcycle oil and it's JASO rated which means it can be used in wet clutches. I've been using it for years with no problems. I also use it on my summer daily bike Which is a 2001 kawasaki klr650. Oh and it also has a higher zddp content which is good for the older bikes.

The air leak will be where carb bolts on not crank seal. Try spraying brake clean around it when running if it revs up u know the deal

Heck yeah man, I remember I had like 6 different machines at the time and I picked up an old xr200 that ran and drove perfectly but I guess I was too hard-core and wanted more cc's and newer machines so I sold it for $200 and now I really wish I hadn't done that lol 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️ I mean heck it may not have had all the power my KTM 380 2 stroke did but it was still a good running little dirt bike and could have been fun to put a girl on and have her come ride with me or a kid even...

Check the needle setting on the carb, I had to use a cheap Chinese knockoff because I lost the original but mine was running choppy just like that until I lowered it. Runs perfect now 👍🏻

My best friend had one. Back in 85, some fozzy bear eyebrow looking dude from the east coast purchased it brand new. He drove it round the neighborhood with all the other dirt bike riders round the neighborhood and it was time to sell it to buy a car for college and work. His dog took a chunk out of the seat and he was selling it for $700 bucks, my buddy bought his ex marine pops along to purchase it and got it for $400 bucks, good to have a marine in the family, you wont get screwed. He bought it, left it at a wild mans house, cops got it, and now its been impounded for a good 30 years. Funny but true story. Good luck with yours.

When dealing with spark it's a good idea to make sure there's no rust on the inside flywheel or any contact points including the points and including the magneto wherever there is rust on the electrical contacts they should all be cleaned saving you a headache down the road

I'm so glad you ended up fixing that thing. Those were kinda my dream bikes when I was a kid my dad would take me to the dirt bike shop and I would test ride bikes, he wouldn't let me get a race bike so I always ended up looking at one of these as a compromise. But my dad didn't have alot of money and I ended up getting a used bike it was a Suzuki TC 100 it was pretty sweet. It was in great shape but yea long story. Anyways hope you put some polish to the honda and clean her up it will be sweet.

Hey 2vintage, I doubt you will read all of this or even see this but please try to. I’ve been watching you videos for about 7 months now, but not just because I was interested in them but because I had recently bought a four-wheeler and wanted to know what to do if it ever broke. So one day about 2 months ago my younger brother was riding it down the street when it blew up! We took it back to the house and I started taking a look at it, the first thing I noticed was that the oil was low. The guy who we bought it from told us he did a oil change right before he listed it. So we had been riding it with low oil for about 6 months since we gotten it. So I figured that the engine was locked up. Problem was, where? I started tearing down the four-wheeler and the top end was free, so I needed to get to the bottom end, but the way this motor was set up, the timing chain sprocket was bolted into or attached to in some way to the camshaft, and it would not budge! So I went to Harbor Freight and bought some impact rated stripped bolt sockets. They worked like a charm! I then got into the cylinder and I was very disappointed to see that the cylinder was scorched, and so was the back side of the piston. After further inspection, I was again disappointed in finding a hole in the bottom end. We put it up on Facebook in hopes of finding some one to sell us a lower unit. Turns out yesterday a man from about 25 min away had a donor. And the best part? We can have it for FREE! He said he has been working on four-wheelers like mine for over 30 years and if we had any questions that we could give him a call. That’s where i’m at right now with this build and we are plaining to get the engine at some point next week because there’s a “winter storm” (about 1 or 2 inches of snow and lots of ice, that’s something for the south!) and the man we are getting it from is out of town. If you or anybody is interested in my project and seeing a rookie fix a four-wheeler it’ll be on my channel with in a couple of weeks. It’s going to be a series so if you do watch one episode, there will be another. You don’t have to watch it and i’m not using you to promote my channel because I have like 11 subs, but if you’re interested, please just check it out. Bro I know nothing about your four wheeler but I know that you should add oil at least every month or two, you aren't going to put a lot in there bu after 5 months your oil was for sure low. Here in Italy I have friends whit modern honda sh 125 that have to add oil because even if the engine is new it burns it, even the shop where I go to tops your oil for free. Hope you have fun whit your four wheeler and check the oil

@@paoloinzaghi2087 Thanks man, but here’s why I didn’t add oil to the machine, we didn’t ride it much because we had some problems with it when we first got it. So it sat for a while, we needed a new starter and a battery and they took a long while to get here. I believe we ordered it in January, and they didn’t come until March, then we needed the carb to be cleaned and we just put it off for a while so we eventually got it clean in the summer because we were tired of it sitting and then in November it blew up. So since we had it from last year, we put about 45 or 50 hours so I’d never thought I would need to put oil in it.

Did you get to fix the hole in the tank? I used to have a 1985 XR100. It gradually ran worse and worse until I set the point gap and cleaned them. Once it was timed right it ran great. I was 14 at the time and it was my first bike. It taught me a lot and I've been a honda 4 stroke guy ever since!

Love the videos bro, I do same thing flip them fix old ones that otherwise would have went to junk yard unfortunately, but just wanted to say this was actually my 1st bike I ever had as a teenager.. the spark plug hole was stripped an had have local Honda dealership put a Healy coil in for me but one that was done $230 later and only $75 for bike I made out ok for $305 lol.. for my first bike.. but yea she don’t have much power lmao,, just got me out in the trails with my buddies at the time and started my life for bikes quads an anything with wheels for the most part lol.. take care broski

I've got you A extra tip for the throttle cable on those to for ya. You can use A bicycle shifter cable.& get some of those brass cable predrill cable slide ends. as asorted sets. That screw down.& tighten from both outter sides of the fittings for locking into place on the cable itself. Their called cable detents.

I wish I could find a Honda XL100 dual sport bike. It was my first street legal motorcycle back when I was 14 in 1973. My grandson is approaching 14, and has been riding off road on private property now for almost 3 years. But now his parents and I would like to get into trail riding, and in my state, any vehicle ridden on public property must be street legal. I thought about a Kawasaki KE100, but can't find one of those either. And it would be nice for him to have the same bike I had nearly 50 years ago. It does seem to have an air/fuel issue. An air leak in the crankcase is not an issue on a 4 stroke. The crankcase is vented on purpose. A bad crank seal would just result in an oil leak. If it is a vacuum leak, it would have to be either in the carburetor, or between the carburetor and the head. Those black rubber/plastic manifolds are really bad to crack. The way to find a vacuum leak is with an UNLIT propane torch. Open the valve slightly, and hold it around the carburetor and manifold while the engine is running. If there is a vacuum leak, the engine will suck in the propane, and the idle speed will go way up. If it is not a vacuum leak, it is likely a plugged passage somewhere in the carburetor. I use Berrymans spray carb cleaner and guitar strings to clean carburetors. I have had to go through the same carburetor 2-3 times before because I missed something. You might also try adjusting the pilot screw.

I have come full circle, I remember seeing this video over a year ago and wished i would find a cool bike to work on. Long behold I forgot about this video, then 2 weeks ago I found a sweet 1983 xl80s only thing missing is lights and battery, first time bike owner and gave her a tune up new tires, runs like a top and will be a perfect distraction for the family. Only thing that I am unsure of is the air box has a whole that looks like it was caused by an old battery explosion? Do i need to patch that up and how? Thank you for this video!

4 strokes don't create a much of a vacuum in the crankcase. And definitely can't run lean from a case leak. If anything the case is pressurized from blow by.
