There's a resident alcoholic at the club I belong to. He's about 60 and a good guy but drinks til he can't walk every night. He's been a club member for decades and hates to get cut off. So the bartenders literally just give him straight cranberry when they know he's had enough. He thinks he's still getting cran vodka. The bartenders only put it to his tab as a soft drink so they aren't ripping him off either. Win win

Jeff Ree that’s actually good practice and legal. You’re technically not allowed to serve alcohol to a visibly intoxicated individual, and if they know he’s gonna cause a scene when they suggest a non-alcohol alternative, then tricking him with straight juice is the best bet. Listen, as a bartender, this is incredibly rare. As a general rule, the bartender takes incredible pride in their job. We go through pour tests to ensure that not only are we not over-pouring, but that were not shorting the guests, either. This type of action would ONLY be attributed to management/ownership. Real bartenders tend real bar. I would NEVER short a guest.
@ryanemitchell7 жыл бұрын
Right, it makes no sense to short customers booze. I definitely notice when my drinks are stronger than usual, and know that my friends have commented on the strength of their drinks as well from time to time. I also know that when I order a generic G&T or vodka and coke, I'm getting a shot from a $20 handle of booze. So, 75 cents a shot on a $5-10 drink... The entire point of the drink is the alcohol, and it's one of the cheapest things compared to overheads like rent/labor/utilities/entertainment -- why, of all places, would you try to increase your margin by cutting back on booze? Just silly.

It is amazing what people will taste if they think it is in there though. Yeah, if you pour it yourself and you know it isn't in there, you would probably be able to tell. It's different when you don't know. the brain can do many weird things.
@kikkibergen8 жыл бұрын
You get the illusion that there is more gin when he put the tip of the glass on the plate with gin. That's why you do it. Second, if you don't know that they didn't use enough gin, you probably wouldn't be able to tell. You expect it to be so you think it will be. It's called Placebo effect. Third, people with some sort of alcohol in their blood wouldn't be able to tell. It's completely different making it yourself and knowing what you put into it, rather than others making it for your and you don't know what's exactly in it but you do expect it to be enough.
@giorgosissaris8 жыл бұрын
I dont think the placebo effect would have such strong impact with alcohol because creating the alcohol taste and sting just with ur imagination is a little difficult.Its an entire different level than taking a sugar pill.And there is even a big difference in the taste of an impure alcohol and the actual brand....
@peach4958 жыл бұрын
The placebo effect might work a couple of times but not over & over again. They would lose customers.
@sirplantain8 жыл бұрын
+dimos k I agree with you to an extent. There are loads of factors in place that the scammer can use to take the persons concentration away from noticing that there isn't as much alcohol in the drink as there should be. The safer way to run this scam is to do it when you've already served the same customer (has to be the person drinking that specific drink) a few times with the right amount of alcohol, you can then start scamming them. This wouldn't work on me, however there is a good reason for that. I'm an recovering alcoholic and I've had people, when I used to drink, try this on me more than once. Watch out for scammers to try and hide behind the fact that the brand of gin they are pushing off on you is only 35/37.5% ABV - 'which is why it doesn't taste as strong'.

John Burgess I always notice how some of the darker liquor brands (Like Hennessy) always seem to be a tad lighter in color on the bar shelves, than the bottles you purchase at the store. This tells me they add a bit of water to their premium bottles once they're a 3rd empty. And for other premium bottles, they flat-out fill them up with cheaper off-brands and serve them up to unknowing uneducated patrons. This is why I no longer buy drinks at bars, clubs and restaurants. I'd rather make my own. Much cheaper and better; as you can make it exactly the way you like it, and you know exactly what you're getting.

I've seen the same vid, but you can see the guys at the end of the vid clearly having barely anything to drink, especially with the ice in it, you don't need to look twice for that. The first, other one is even worse, if the bartender wanted to scam everyone he just opens two bottles, one with the real drink for the guys he likes and one half filled with water for the guys he doesn't like. On top of that the guy get's the drink and the woman, who clearly drinks something else, says yes it's fine? Pretty much every bartender scam is easely visable or easely tasteble and simply makes you never coming back and give them a bad name behind their back as well.

Nearly 15 years in this of trade and I can tell you there are more efficient ways to cheat. To have a plate with spirit and dip the glass in it is a big stupid ideea. First of all how many plates you should have around the bar? one for each spirit? Think how difficult will be to do your job and to remember what you have in each plate? Especially if you work in a busy bar I can guarantee you that you don't have time and energy for stupid things like having plates with spirits. Regarding the second part... yes, some bartenders will cheat you but I never met anyone to cheat me with 40%. And one more thing...most of the customers in clubs or bars they tent to have at least their first seep using the straw .... so before you have a comment please educate yourself and get a part time job in a busy bar.

I was at a noisy college bar once and ordered 2 beers which cost me $7. I paid with a $10 and the bartender gave me back $13. She somehow must have thought I gave her a $20. I didn't bother to correct her, I just gave her a nice tip.

How is a double only 40% more, shouldn't it be double?
@SpencerFcp6 жыл бұрын
No, it 40% more from the altered pour. The altered pour is 40% less than what the entire double is.
@cdcdx26 жыл бұрын
Nah, a double isnt actually a 100% increase, and a triple is even less added on.

I`ve have been following this series with great interest and enjoyment. But as a professional bartender of thirty years, I must dispute this video. All bartenders I have eve known, have fleeced the bar and not the customers. In fact, the customers are their willing or ignorant accomplices, being the recipients of the bartenders heavy hand and they are more than willing to tip generously for discounted access to the bars products... As for the argument that the bartenders would lose their jobs for cheating their boss and not the customers, my answer is that that is what the next bartender job is for...
@nimay138 жыл бұрын
I kinda see the point. I work with behind-the-counter retail and most of the time it's the staff gonna scam the company. Not the customer. Customers tend to notice something's up. But a company would found out way later. By then you would've gotten away with quite a sum.
@Kharkovkid8 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Thanks for the backup...

Agreed except sometime the bartender is the owner in which case he might do this. The problem then is after a few visits & not catching a buzz I would stop going to that bar.

nimay13 That's absolute bullshit. I was a buyer for Walmart for 5 yrs and the biggest cause for Shrink in all brick and mortar retail is customer theft. Jesus Christ, everyone is a master online these days.

This can't work as well in Britain, where the measures are set by law and the bottles are usually hung up with dispensers. For more complicated cocktails perhaps, I once saw a bartender top up a cosmopolitan with soda water.

Why even scam ppl like this?! Bars will always make a profit off drinks I mean some drinks cost the same amount as a bottle you’d get form your local grocery or liquor store.

Videos like these are the reason people think bars are still bad places to go. Being a bartender isn't about scamming people because the prices set are already usually in the 300-400% profit range (at least in the areas I've worked in) so this scamming is really just being a bad bartender. When you're a bartender, your job is 25% making drinks and 75% making customers happy that's why bars usually have a problem of OVERpouring which happens when a bartender likes/feels bad for a customer. When your tips can account for over half of your income, you care a lot about your customers. Bars where the bartenders only bartend and don't interact with customers are the bars that no one wants to go to. Show me a bar with employees that are happy, talkative, interactive and sincere and I'll show you a bar that has satisfied, well tipping customers.

+Pope Christopher I don't go to bars often, but I had a gentleman overpour my rum and coke in university once because I called him "a cutey". Keep in mind, it was the local gay bar, and I was trying to keep my friend out of trouble. (She was binge drinking, she downed 6 pineapple martinis in the space of 1 1/2 hours.) I had to get a cab for her and present her to the parents.

It can become too inconvenient if it's the wrong type of person. Some people become ass when they're drunk, and they don't want to leave even though serving them at that point would be unethical and stupid. If a big fight comes up, then days over man. Just be careful...

Once bought a $4 bottle of beer. Gave the bartender a $20 and she walked off and never came back. Have also seen the waitress who can't do math scam. You're out with the bunch of friends and order a round of beers. Beers are $8 each and you order 7. "That's $72," says the waitress. No, it isn't. I once had the same girl do it to our table three times in a row. It was obvious she was doing it to everybody, and I guess if she gets lucky 1 time out of 3 and pockets the extra, she's got a nice little scam going.
@holystone603 жыл бұрын
No bar would ever actually do this. All it takes is for one bartender to get fired and give up the whole scam, and the bars reputation is ruined.

@thecowboy96986 жыл бұрын
Personally, I always drink beer, and I make sure that I drink in moderation. And I mark down on pen and paper how many beers I have, and the price attached to each one and then before I ask for my bill, I make sure that I add it up for myself. The reason why I personally never get drunk in bars, because when you are drunk that makes you an easy target, and it's not just crooked bartenders who prey on such people.
