You just blew my mind in terms of perspective. 10 years ago I bought a brand new Cayman S and loaded it up with almost $17,000 worth of options. I am now in the market for a new Cayman, and even though I have more than enough money to get a fully loaded GT4 or even a 911, I just might get a base Cayman with the bare minimum of options. At the end of the day, all I really want is to drive a well-balanced, mid-engine, Porsche.

Hello Dominic. Curious as to what the ownership experience has been with your Cayman S. Have been interested in buying one, but have been scared away based on reliability/durability issues. Over your 10 years of ownership what have you had to do to your car?
@yamahapilot2 жыл бұрын
@@dangrass The ones built from 2009 - 2012 are bulletproof. I drove mine through 8 harsh Canadian winters and never once had a problem. All I did was regular maintenance and extra oil changes. You won't be disappointed if you find one that hasn't been abused. I'd prefer to get a new one but I much prefer the looks of the 987.2, so I'm torn.

@@calvin3448 Not necessarily. You get the fun near the redline. And that’s 80mph in second gear in the 4.0. Very frustrating if you aren’t on the track. Nothing worse that a fast car you can’t exploit. I’ve owned stupid quick cars. And I hated them because you can’t actually use the performance. A four cyl simple cayman with a manual box is sublime.

Great minds think alike! My 718 is just purchased is 2021 base model. This is how Porsche should be configured and purchased. Well done! My vector and Porsche vector were not in alignment as well. The original idea the way Dr. Porsche would stand for. I was a bmw enthusiast and bmw went to a different place so I moved on to Porsche. My 718 is the purest form available. Closest to the original concept. Hope to see more content soon.

Right on your page Mike. I own a similar 2018 base Cayman and I totally agree, especially since I live in Edmonton Alberta Canada with the same road and winter conditions. Nice video. I bought a base 718 Boxster MY20 and it’s my daily driver. I didn’t take a manual, because of the traffic here in Melbourne Australia, so i have the PDK. I was going to get a SLC at the time. I like the base the most. Yes, there is the S, and the GTS, but i like the base. It has enough power for me. It has the feel of quality, the MY20 so it has the sport exhaust as standard which was option before. I specified mine with the leather interior too with sport tex. I got the base as my first Porsche because in my book if they can’t get the base right, then they can’t get any other model right. I have Aventurine Green (manual mirrors), all leather interior. I have had it a year now.

I bought a 718 Cayman for the same reasons. I like the design language with more physical buttons and less digital inputs. The difference is i went with the 4.0 liter manual because it's a dying breed and I want to secure one before it's too late. I tried to do away with as many electronics as possible. No power folding mirrors, no lighting package, no LCA, No LED llighting cause it adds an extra module for auto high beam, no entry drive, no Nav, No Bose or Burmester, you get the point. In america they include parking sensors which I don't want either but I'm stuck with it and will have holes in my front and rear bumper. I just wish I could have paid extra for an manual hand brake.

My past Porsches: silver 2004 Boxster base MT, silver 2008 Carrera base MT, black, of course and still a base, 2012 Carrera Black Edition PDK (oops! my mistake), NEXT a 2022 718 Cayman base MT. Forever Manual! OK went with python green--call me crazy. Drove by a dealer here (in Socal) this week and of the 40 cars (most were likely in for service) I saw huddled together on the lot EVERY single one of them was a muted color-- blacks, greys, whites, silvers--not one car with any pop. I'm so glad I stumbled upon your video. Like you, I value the essential Porsche driving experience. That means a six-speed manual above all else! What makes me hesitate to pull the trigger on a Cayman is all the complaints I hear about the tall gearing - it has six gears but you only get to use two. That would drive me nuts. I'm looking forward to getting your opinion once you've been driving it for a while. Keep making these videos :-)
@ForeverManual3 жыл бұрын
It all depends on how to use it. Here’s the thing. If you are up to revving the engine all the time to a red line then the second gear is your legal limit. Riding on a torque-rich middle range though makes me utilizing all six within the city restrictions. It’s just not “the Porsche experience” we all read about - I’m keeping noise low while enjoying other ways of communicating with the car :)
@inglebybhoy32933 жыл бұрын
That’s an interesting point. But I find it makes me think more about my driving style in various different situations. I find that I’m engaging with the transmission more than any other manual car I’ve driven. That was the reason I bought a sports car and I think my driving has improved as a result.

4:00 If you want the BEST Porsche, get the BASE one
@rembo1833 жыл бұрын
The base Boxster as shown here is certainly the best value at only $60,000 (US). I see you have several options which probably makes it cost a few thousand more but it’s still good value. I’d love to get the GTS but I’m not sure it’s a good value at $90,000. The fact that it’s got a six cylinder plus great options standard makes it very desirable but with only a few options more your over $100,000. So I’m curious, is the main reason you chose the flat four, the better price or what? I wouldn’t blame you at all because I’m thinking of doing the same thing except the flat six looks so great. Thanks for your viewpoint and honesty; it is refreshing.

Hi Mike. My name is Miguel (Mike too), and I'm seriously thinking about buying a 718. Your video has been very enlightening, because I was considering a 4.0, if I'm honest, basically for the "porsche sound". But ... do I really need to pay almost double for it? Probably not ... so I'm considering the base. I'm also waiting to see what about the new BMW G42, but the 718 is starting to tempt me a lot. How about your tester feelings with the car sound? Thx a lot!!!
@ForeverManual3 жыл бұрын
The problem with me is that I don’t care much about the sound. I deal with what I get because that’s the one I can afford :)) Luckily the sound isn’t awful, and I like the way early four cylinder Porsches sound, so there is definitely a resemblance that I find nice 👍🏻 The 4.0’s sound is much more charismatic but on the other hand the NA engine won’t be as quiet as turbocharged one if there will be a need for being quiet.

As a daily driver, how is the interior cabin noise level? I do know that you found the method of turning off the artificial noise unit, which must have helped a little. While this is a subjective question, my hope is that there is not too high of a noise level for a car that is any everyday car (and not just a weekend fun toy). Thanks!

It isn’t the loudest spec, thanks to reasonably sized tires. But those are performance tires, and with barely any sound proofing applied to its body the Cayman is definitely noisier than your average family car. It’s a purpose-built sports car, so the relatively high level of sound pressure can be considered as an essential part of the experience. If you are looking for a quieter 718, I suggest you have a look at the S with disabled sound generator.

What about going through ramps. Any chance it gets a scratch on the underbody?

Mine goes over fine. Reasonable speed is required though…

Hi, How is the clutch in the new cayman. Is it hard or soft and where is the biting point ? Is it gradual or all the way on the top
@ForeverManual3 жыл бұрын
It’s well weighted: not too light but enough to be usable in traffic. The travel is long enough to define the sitting position, the biting point is to be found rather early but you have to follow the pedal all the way up to avoid the shaking. Can be done quickly though. It’s easy to set off without using an accelerator, but can be tricky starting uphill as hold function sucks. Some say these motors don’t like the clutch to be partially loaded, it’s unavoidable in city traffic though.
