The 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman is never front and center with the GTS and the GT4 gracing magazine covers and KZbin videos everywhere, but does that mean you should count it out? We sample a member’s 2022 model, with a 2.0-litre turbocharged flat-four good for 300 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque and a six-speed manual transmission.

Choosing between a 4-cylinder and a 6-cylinder Porsche is a very 1st world problem. Neither one is bad. The distinctions are shades of excellence. Some people would be willing to forgo the experience of a 6-cylinder engine, but prefer the experience of a new Porsche. Some people with the same budget will forgo the new-Porsche experience in order to be able to afford a 6-cylinder. Neither is a bad choice, and both add to the Porsche community. The world is a better place for the choice!

Owning a Porsche period is a first world problem. People buy them and not econo-boxes because they want an experience. I understand why people would have reservations about paying north of $60,000 for a turbo 4-cylinder.

Not to mention the $15k dealers want to tack on to MSRP for a GTS, and GT4 are even crazier ADM. No thanks, at that price step up into a 911, even if it’s a base model with a few performance options, I’d take that over an overpriced Cayman.

@@ArtVandelayOfficial I disagree. My 987.1 Cayman S sounded amazing above 5.5k. The newer non-gt3 cars dont sound 'good' because they're turbo'd. Turbos will almost always kill sound volume (traditional intake/exhaust noises). But I agree on your comparisons. All 3 (Honda, M Car, P Car) all have dual cam profiles, so they're all going to sound great above 65-70% of their total RPM capacity (the vaunted, 'VTEC kicked in', lol). Ironically, Nissan was first to use this in a production car, iirc. My father's 93 Nissan Sentra SE-R with the SR20DE (no T since it wasn't turbo.. that motor was never an option in North America) and had VTEC before Honda had it in North America. Now look at Nissan......

I'm 70+ and I have a 718 Cayman s, bought new in 2017. It's driven just like a daily driver (summer only): 1) Comfortable; 2) No mechanical issues; 3) Spacious; 4) Economy (premium only). However, I change oil every 6 months, with 5k or with 100 miles it doesn't matter. However it's Guard Red, it-stick-out like a sore thumb.

1) comfortable?, 🤣, what did you have before that, a tractor? 3) spacious?, 😂. Spacious!, where have you been? Even a model T has more space than a Cayman. 4) economy? Compared to what? As for mechanical issues you obviously don’t drive it much. Any number of modern hot hatches and coupes will be much more civilised to live with, much better suspension, way better economically, more reliable and at least just as fast if not faster. It’s about time got into the modern world, sport chrono package 🤣😂🤣

I couldn’t recline the seat to get comfortable, I didn’t like the engine right behind my head making a horrible noise and I didn’t like the over size wheels and their clumpy ride. Considering the speed limit on A - B roads is 60 I can’t see the point. I could go and buy a fully specc’d one new if I wanted, very fashioned their saving grace is the stationary looks.

Totally agree with the video. I own a sport chrono 718S and a 911 but have also driven a base 718. While the variable vane turbocharger on the S has clear advantages over the base 718, the base is certainly a very capable, beautiful and respectable sports car that will immediately bring an enduring smile to the driver. Any 718 has a lightness about it that provides an arguably better driving experience in the corners that the 911 cannot match. The sport chrono and PASM options described in the video are worth getting for sure.

We’ve owned a 2017 Cayman S (Miami Blue) for the past 4 years. We bought it used and it was spec’d with PASM, Torque Vectoring, PDK and Sport Chrono. I really wish that Sport+ (not Sport) mode was reviewed, because the Turbos are kept spooled up and all of the turbo lag goes away.

 I like the sound a lot, especially when its full throttle or the boost button is pushed. I understand the Subaru comparison, but club members seem to forget that Porsches started as flat fours. As much as we love our car, we quit taking it to club events as older PCA members are not shy about telling you how “you should have” spent your money.

Not tuneful as such but kinda old school Porsche to me. I5s my first Porsche but I’ve driven a couple of generations of 911’s on the track and skid pans and my Dad owned a 1984 911 Carerra (pre turbo) that I drove. Personally, I’d have a loaded base over an S with no performance options. I’m not interested in HP bragging rights. I’m interested in driving. All the investment in my car is in dynamics and a nice interior. I have the regular wheels (because our roads are rough) and a standard color (black. My interior is red leather but with the black dash with red stitching). The car rides and handles like a dream and is deceptively quick in a way that the reported 0-60 figure doesn’t show.

It’s not turbo lag. It’s the boost threshold. The turbos spool almost instantly. They just do so over 2500rpm, which with a manual box is a non-issue. I’m always in the sweet spot. There is no lag driving like this. It goes like stink.
@PorscheClubofAmerica

You are correct. There is not much turbo lag (there is a tiny bit, even in the sweet spot) but there is little power below the boost threshold. Unfortunately turbo lag has been used to describe boost threshold for so many years that boost threshold doesn't mean much to most people... We'll try our best to use the correct term in future videos.
