I took up pen and ink about a year or so ago and did the usual cross hatching, etc but I did not find it to be realistic enough for me. I discovered stippling and now I create nearly photographic art. I go down to my studio, ask Alexa to play my music. It is like therapy and the best part of my day, every day.

the therapeutic side of stippling is so underrated, I'm glad to hear someone else has that experience as well!

Great tips! Not a chore, a meditation - totally resonated! Props for using whilst!! I’m going to start using the same size pen, I’ve been switching and wasn’t happy with the results. Thanks!!

great tutorial. super informative for such a short video. like all things, once you are instructed in the basics, you will learn the most by giving it your time and attention and discovering for yourself what will work. train your eye and your hand

Most of the time I let the dots go down chaotically (within reason) so long as the spacing is even the result will be the same. Attempting to lay the dots without any overlap is pointless and tedious and next to impossible if you are drawing at any reasonable scale. PLus I like the texture that is created within the stipple by allowing a certain amount of overlap. It never interferes with the image I create. My tip for beginners is to use a 1mm or 0.5mm pen at first and go for something small, no more than A5 (letter size). You will kill your hand if you go larger at first. Try making simple shapes like squares, spheres and ribbons. Don't try for complex shapes at first. You can also combine stippling with line shading, and especially hatching to very good effect.

How do you transfer the sketched image in the form of an outline for dot painting? Do you sketch right on the paper for dot work? I would appreciate it if you could teach me. Your KZbin is very informative. Thank you very much!
