Thanks Jamie. Great explanation :-). Are you still making these tutorials? If you make a follow-up then it might be worth mentioning that some verbs, e.g. sevmek, require the accusative case even when there is no direct object.

How can it be distinguished in the example "ayı gördüm" whether the meaning is, I saw the bear or I saw the moon ?

Basically just context. There's a few things like this in Turkish but context usually makes it obvious which meaning is being used.

Ay-ı gördüm = I saw the moon VS Ayı-y-ı gördüm = I saw the bear VS Ayı gördüm = I saw (a) bear. These are all distinct sentences. Hope it helps. www.TurkishinManchester.com
