4.19.......the one thing that didn't click for you was the director......I don't think the director got the the epic heights / climaxes of a nolan film.....i thought he didn't quite get the pacing right......you can see what I mean when you look at justice league / vs the snyder cut......same actors, but the story in the synderverse is 100 times better.....I don't think they quite got it right, which made me uneasy......but I did like it.....i didn't walk away saying that was bad.....just i guess a little disapointed with some of the design decisions.......ie a wing suit, instead of the cape.....bruce being the weakest character in the movie......but that could be because once he realises he needs to be hope and not vengeance....he turns the page etc......so I guess it should have been sold as a year 1 batman.....very very rough around the edges....but the movie lacked the fun that the nolan trilogy did right......gordon was amazing, the detective work was great.....it worked, alfred, not so much.....they didn't click like bale and caine did......but I did like the movie......it just wasn't a 10 out of 10 for me

Does anyone else think it's super interesting that Matt Reeves released the first teaser trailer knowing full-well that everyone would lose their minds with the "I'm vengeance." scene, only to turn it on its head and blow people's mind even further by having the Riddler-copycat delivers the same line? @@jaystr I liked Jeffrey Wright as Gordon. He was a good cop in a corrupt system, and a decent detective that really helped Batman when he needed another opinion. We only saw the cop though. Yep. Thats why its the ultimate Batman movie; its so tonally consistent with what are widely considered the definitive representations of the character across various media i.e. the animated series, the Arkham games and the most noir-ish comics like Year One and The Long Halloween. The TDK trilogy never really "got" Batman.

I'm with Adam on this one. The tone was right up my (crime) alley. The one thing I've always wanted more of in all previous Batman films is seeing his detective side. I enjoyed the narration and actually wished there was more of it. I thought it added to the noir/graphic novel feel of it all.

It beats TDK for me. Best presentation of Batman. Rob knocked it out of the park with his stage presence. The batmobile is easily my favorite. The cast was amazing even Colin who i really didnt give him the “chance”. Unseen Prisoner has a great laugh. Best portrayal of Gotham visually. The score was great & cinematography was off the charts.
@CurseTheCosmos2 жыл бұрын
Glad to know I'm not alone in feeling this. TDK is expertly made and worthy of its praise, no doubt. But I'm not a fan of Nolan's visual style. His Batman movies always felt cold, dry, and sterile. A little too realistic for me.
@MrTwessel302 жыл бұрын
I think it's a formidable opponent, but I think TDK is a superior film. Not a batman film, but an actual films. The action set peices are significant better captures and actually visible. Take the batmobile/penguin chase. It was so much style that the scene itself was impossible to decipher. It's so dark, and constantly blinding you with light. On 2nd viewing I checked out of that scene half way. Compared to say the Joker/Dent car chase with the batpod. That scenes is incredibly clear. I just think Nolan is a better filmmaker

I find it interesting Hector wants to have an emotionally stable Batman. He is a flawed man despite all the good he does. Those flaws lead to Nightwing leaving, the creation of the Red Hood, and hard choices he has to make. His flaws are a huge part of his character.

One of the things I thought was interesting was the portrayal of Bruce Wayne as a recluse. At this point, he's not even trying to lead a double life. He's all in on being Batman. But in the film he learns the renewal fund his parents started has been mismanaged, arguably because Bruce isn't involved with it. He realizes Gotham needs hope. If there is a second film, I think we'll see the more familiar Bruce Wayne. Bruce didn't know that Gotham needs him and Batman.

The thing about Riddler not being able to figure out that Bruce is Batman: It was reflected in Riddler wanting the new mayor to be shot. He didn't believe that she actually cared about the city - and he was wrong. He also didn't believe that Bruce Wayne could ever care about the city (enough to be The Batman) and he was wrong. It was the perfect blind spot.

Something I really loved about the film in hindsight is how consistent (I found) Reeves was with the placement in time of this story. By that I mean - this is his 2nd year of being Batman, he can't say he loves Alfred yet because he's essentially a youngling as Batman. He's still too angry, he's still exploring the balance of Bruce and Batman, he's still yet to discover how effective "being Bruce" can be, he's just vengeance... like the fellas said, only at the end had he started to realise what impact Batman could have as a hero. It did mean certain moments that could've been more cathartic for the viewer didn't happen as expected, but I think it was a character/story choice from Reeves. I respect that... and if we get a sequel, it could mean really satisfying moments to come.
@speak1232 жыл бұрын
Enjoyed the discussion guys I personally loved many things about the movie, didn’t like some of it, but I’m comfortable if Reeves manoeuvres into a traditional story telling comic book movie as he has laid his ground work for his Gotham and characters that live in it I can see myself really loving this movie more and more as time goes on, but maybe not what felt like the contractually obligated “big laser in the sky” moment towards the end One thing I especially loved was Bruce at the end realising that he has to stand for more than fear and vengeance And how for the majority of the movie, his way of thinking and carrying himself has lead to the inspiration of the wrong sorts, (and kind of a big deserved slap in the face of those who believe Batman has to be like that) In fact Pattinson was amazing, I hope they retain that barely speaking, always watching and analysing Batman thing he does. Because thats Batman for me That and the man who carried that woman to safety, that’s Batman Very interested to see where this goes, praying we get Mr Freeze with Christoph Waltz playing him lol

I'm not expecting Bruce to say he loves Alfred. I don't think he really understands love or his relationship with Alfred at this point. I mean he snaps at Alfred for having Wayne cufflinks. His passion is resolved at the end though so I could see him learning to love in a next movie. I am not a huge Batman fan. And DC frustrates me with their lack of continuity. Joaqiun should be in this universe. Ben Affleck was my favorite Batman and he didn't even get a solo movie. It's like dropping Andrew Garfield's 3rd Spider-Man, then realizing after NWH that he should have got his third - frustrating. Dark Knight was one of the only Batman movies I enjoyed. PeaceMaker had recently put Batman in the shadows on my list of favorite DC heroes. This movie bought Batman back into the light for me. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Even though you guys are saying you liked aspects, the tone you guys are giving off is a thumbs down.

This is so interesting. I truly loved this movie which surprised me because I haven't liked any Batman movie from start to finish, ever. I liked that this Bruce is so reserved, it felt right especially for how early we are in his career. I did cry during the Alfred scene because he is so closed off. I understand wanting him to say love instead of care, but he's not ready to say that yet. But that's what sequels are for, to see Bruce open himself up just a bit more. I loved this cast, I loved the story, I loved the comics it pulled from. This is easily my favorite Batman movie. It was way more than I expected.

To me, the motivation for both Riddler and Batman the entire movie was VENGEANCE!! That’s truly what ties those two characters together. Their both orphans who are angry about their past trauma and have never healed from it. Instead of seeking healing, they stew in it and seek out VENGEANCE against those who they feel have wronged them. Batman’s parents were murdered by criminals, so that’s who he stalks and beats mercilessly. Riddler was failed by the corrupt system of Gotham, so he goes after the city officials and powerful players he deems responsible. Luckily, in the end Batman realizes that pure vengeance won’t solve anything and that hope is the only way to heal not only his broken city, but quite possibly his broken self. Such a beautiful film.
@gpauldejesus2 жыл бұрын
Gotta remember that this is still early flawed Riddler, just like Batman he was blinded by his hatred, towards the corrupt, the elite and specifically Bruce Wayne. So when you add up his admiration for the Batman you can see why he would miss that. Also I love how this moment sort of acts as a mirror to Batman, where he’s yelling at the Riddler, telling him he’s a psychopath and all these things and it’s almost like he’s yelling at himself.
@hittingyouoverthehead2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Riddler is smart but he's still blinded by his biases. In his mind, a masked vigilante who fights for justice putting his life on the line can never come from the elite, upper echelons of society. This is why I think this trilogy isn't done with the Riddler. He has more growth left to do and he would undoubtedly feel terribly betrayed at realizing his idol and the person he hates the most in the world are the same person.

That’s interesting that you guys weren’t so hot with it. I loved the movie. I think I might love it as much if not more than the Nolan films and I think it’s because I really thought Pattinson did a great job of bringing another aspect of Batman to life. He felt angrier and more vulnerable. This is not the Batman we know yet. I also particularly loved that Pattinson didn’t do the silly Christian Bale voice. That said it did start a bit slow but I appreciate it took it’s time to build a mood and an atmosphere to Gotham. Also sorry Hector but I disliked Afleck’s Batman so I appreciate Reeves taking this in a completely opposite direction lol
@butterflymage56232 жыл бұрын
I think something that’s overlooked is Alfred almost dying isn’t for us. It’s part of the arc of Batman evolving. He learned he has someone he cares about that he’s AFRAID to lose. Batman learned fear, and then got hit with fear again when talking to riddler in the prison when he initially thinks the riddler knows he’s Bruce Wayne. It’s quite genius in my mind. Batman is vengeance and puts fear into criminals. He inspires the riddler to also become vengeance and put fear into powerful and correct. Which then bleeds into Bruce Wayne/Batman. This arc was Batman dealing with a version of himself and being absolutely humbled which is a major part of his character arc.

This discussion has had the same effect on me that Hector said at the beginning: Many people I respect had issues with the movie that I did not have. Going beyond the whole 'I need validation please have the same identical opinion than me on this piece of art I love', I'll say it mostly comes down to what you intimately believe an aesthetic, and ambient, and the psychology of a character represents. Maybe TDK its a better movie, I think they're too far apart to compared them, but ultimately, I think this Batman it's the true representation of what I think THE BATMAN is: The story of a dark soul looking for hope within himself, and trying to give it to other people. For conveying that, I'm grateful to everyone that worked on this movie. Maybe I'll second guess myself in time, you made some really good points. I don't know about masterpiece, let's leave those words for useless brackets we actually kinda need to leave behind. This movie just hit me.

The batman was amazing. It was detective comics and has references and Easter eggs for all the characters that connect to the long and crazy history of batman in the comics. He's inexperienced and coming into his own and trying to figure out what he wants to symbolize and represent as batman in gotham city going forward. All the other characters are great in their roles and the story is really well told and is philosophical and thought provoking. The technical aspects of the movie are all amazing. The only flaws is the length in some parts and a couple of editing choices but those are minor issues. It's a psychological horror/ thriller that captures who and what Batman and his characters are in the DC universe. This is The Batman. It's a 9.3 out of 10 for me. It's in my top 3 batman films and I highly reccomend it and was greatly surprised how much I love this movie. I've also seen it multiple times. It's a great movies for batman and comic book fans.

I got home rewatched the Dark Knight because I wanted to make sure my thoughts after seeing were true and not just a case of recency. I liked this movie better.

Great review guys. Saw it last night and I absolutely adored it. It’s been a while since we’ve had a solo Batman movie so it felt good. Loved the tone, themes, writing and the cinematography was stellar. I especially loved the fact that by the end of the movie, Bruce realised that he’s bigger than just fear. He can use fear for criminals but he’s become a symbol of hope for good people in Gotham 🦇

28:28 - the better question here is: would it have necessarily made it a better movie/story to have the background of the Wayne family completely spelled out? I think it was better to leave it up for interpretation because the point is that whatever Batman's mission is, should be beyond just his parents and moreso about the corruption and evil of Gotham as a whole. Although I kinda do agree, they might as well have fully committed to the Wayne family being corrupt at that point storywise

Zach Snyder screwed up too by not being able to create a solid 2 hour movie. If you hire a guy to build a 3 bedroom house and he builds you a 6 bedroom mansion, that's his fault. Zach was hired to make a 2 hour movie not a 4 hour movie.

Ffs obviously if he stayed on his version wouldn’t have been 4 hours in the theatre.
@zengamer212 жыл бұрын
@@NZealand It wasn't just Justice League where he went overlong. He first made the mistake on Batman v Superman. The theatrical cut was a D but the director's cut was a B. So, two times in a row he couldn't contain his ideas into a normal movie size.

Matt Reeves' The Batman is at par with Nolan's The Dark Knight and even Todd Phillip's Joker. If you think its even better, you are and entitled to your own opinion and I respect that. I'm lucky to have previously read some comic titles that were an obvious reference to this movie, and Reeve's adaptation and interpretation is on-point. And for someone who has seen all Batman movies since Tim Burton's Batman at the cinema, this is an absolutely dark but refreshing take. But like Adam, I'm into serial killer/ detective/ true crime stuff, I guess that's why I just love it. An epic masterpiece on its own.

I think it's possible the Riddler might know who Batman is. The whole thing was a tease, he just wants to keep the information to himself and not spill it to the camera.
@stonemileryan2 жыл бұрын
I don't think it is possible. If Riddler did know, why would he send a letter to the batman in a fireproof envelope attached to the bomb designed to kill Bruce. He clearly wanted batman to recieve that letter.
@reizig2 жыл бұрын
@@stonemileryan Good point. Though maybe it's possible he put it together after Bruce Wayne didn't die. But also, it was the most half-assed of the assassination attempts. Just sends a letterbomb hoping a billionaire recluse reads his own mail? He showed up personally to murder everyone else. I'm not really sold either way, just fun to speculate. And he's the type of villain to misdirect and play mind games so who knows.

I’ve been reading a lot of opinions of The Batman on the socials and one thing I think we should all keep in mind is that it’s ok to like a certain take on Batman and not like another. The great thing about comic book characters that have been around for 80 or so years is that we all have a favourite version of that character and what it means to us. That version will always exist so it doesn’t matter if a book or show or movie comes along with a different take on the character that doesn’t take your fancy. Personally, I really, really, REALLY liked The Batman but I also want a movie Batman where the bat family can exist along with the more extravagant and supernatural villains from his rogues gallery without them having to fit a ‘grounded’ reality. We may not all agree with a certain take on Batman, but we can all agree that we like Batman as a whole, so we shouldn’t be putting people down if their Batman is not your Batman and vice-versa.

Perhaps it didn’t connect with you emotionally because the two main characters lack emotions(or at the very least suppress them) - Batman/Bruce Wayne and Riddler
@mydreaminorbit92972 жыл бұрын
Classic example of why you should always go into a new iteration of a series with a clear mind. Matt Reeves stated over and over again that he wanted to tell a detective noir story. The Riddler is better suited for that type of story than the Joker. This story is Matt Reeves story told the way he wanted and I absolutely loved it. As for the Riddler's plan, he wasn't going after the identity of Batman. His goal was to wash the city of those who he deemed corrupt. As the son of the Wayne's that started the renewal project. Bruce Wayne was on the Riddler's hit list.

TDK hit at the right time, the right summer, the right moment, the right cast, the right movie for me to love it over all other Batman movies. But this was like TAS come to life, with issues, but the Paul parts and the Zoe parts and the Colin parts made this movie for me.

And then there's that B mobile!!! And and then, the theme (star wars Imperial March version hehe)... Yeahhhhhhhh, I really really really like this movie!

Just came out of the cinema and the Batman was phenomenal. As someone who grew up watching gangster/crime movies this was right up my alley, loved the story so much I didn't notice the three hours. However, I do agree with Hector about the movie lacking in emotion, especially between Alfred and Bruce. Wish there was more, but I just passed it off as Bruce still struggling with creating personal bonds. Either way, thanks guys for the amazing review!

I think I still prefer The Dark Knight by a bit, but I will say it is better than Begins and Rises. Probably my 2nd or most favorite live action Batman movie. Definitely has the best cinematography out of them and what would I give to see Greig Fraser’s cinematography for a Marvel movie someday. Penguin’s “No Hablo Espanol?” and some of the scenes with Bats and Gordon, especially the thumb drive, had me dying. 😂 Also, not gonna lie, seeing the Batmobile chase sequence made me even more hyped to see Robbie Reyes’ Hell Charger in his own potential Ghost Rider movie someday. Like I could easily see the Batmobile in this movie as the Hell Charger.

The Director (I think the Director, not sure) stated that it wasn’t a “check out the next villain” type of tease but a more “Gotham is far from peace” type of tease. He might be the third film villain. Also I think he stated that he wanted someone like Mr Freeze as the next villain.
@kazetoame2 жыл бұрын
The nod to Joker just had me gasping that Reeves was building the Rogues gallery, especially since they are in Arkham together. I don’t think Joker will come into play until much later if they continue (god I hope they do) with this universe. Reeves was talking about Mr. Freeze and from a questionnaire clip, Pattinson is hoping for The Court of Owls, Dano liked that idea too.

What I found an interesting take on the movie, is that we only see the movie through two eyes. The riddlers, and Batman’s. There’s no random scene of side characters, telling us the viewer a plot point. We see this movie unfold as Batman learns it.

I share Hector's sentiment about Andy Serkis' Alfred. When the trailers came out, I jokingly commented in some videos that it was the first time that Alfred was just as "jacked" if not more than Batman himself lol At least to me, Andy Serkis did not look "old" enough to be Alfred, so that connection and empathy was probably not there for the audience--he did not feel vulnerable. Sir Michael Caine set the bar too damn high!

It did an astounding job of recreating, fleshing out, and making better..the opening scene from Batman (1989), with the two muggers talking about Batman after robbing that family. The one guy is telling the other about how someone he knows was thrown off a building, and how there was "no blood in the body"..thinking Batman is a vampire or monster of some kind. His partner is skeptical ("no shit, it was all over the pavement"), then Batman shows up and scares the fuck out of'em.

I gave it a 10/10! Great Batman movie about Batman! Thank you Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson for giving us this Batman! I saw it 4 times and I didn’t feel the run time because I was so engrossed in the movie! Go see it in theaters it’s a must!! As far as Bruce, I did feel for him and you can see that they had some moments and the moment in the hospital was important I feel like that moment with Alfred in the hospital helped Bruce step back into his humanity because he does love Alfred and he doesn’t want to lose him if there was no Alfred to be in his life to be that parental figure then I think Bruce/Batman would go completely over the edge and lose all his humanity because Bruce died in that alley with his parents and that pain from that trauma drives his Vengeance, Batman is trying to find purpose for his pain! I feel like he earned his arc by the end of the movie it’s not all about Vengeance he has to be better he has to be more, he becomes Batman by the end of the movie! There villains aren’t fully formed yet either, so much growth and potential for this trilogy!
